The Department of Computer Science of the Faculty of Science is seeking two doctoral researchers to work on a project funded by Business Finland within the context of the 6G Bridge program. The 6G Bridge program aims to establish Finland as a global leader in providing new value with 5G Advanced and 6G technologies for sustainable industries and societies, such as smart cities, smart energy, smart ports, and smart factories, with various ecosystem players. One of the key applications of 6G networks will be massive twinning, which extends the digital twin concept introduced in 5G to various types of physical objects. This project contributes to the 6G Bridge vision and goals by developing a digital twin system for optimized sensing and communication in personal area networks and more advanced IoT networks. The project team, which consists of researchers from the University of... Helsinki, will be advised by representatives from industry partners, including Nokia, Elisa, and Mevea.

Positions description

One of the doctoral researcher positions will focus on researching, designing, and developing optimized software solutions that can be used interoperably in a wide range of smart devices to perform actionable data-driven insights for optimized sensing and communication tasks in IoT systems. The other doctoral researcher will research and develop an innovative digital twin framework that can assess, among other things, the efficiency and functionality of the corresponding physical IoT system through the use of AI-powered analytics.

Both positions will require the doctoral researchers to advance research in specific technological areas, such as computing and networking resource management, heterogeneous data source management, AI for IoT networks and systems. The doctoral researchers will be encouraged to design their own research projects within the scope of the overall project in collaboration with the PIs. High cooperation between the two doctoral researchers is a key requirement for the project's success. The successful candidates will be primarily supervised by Prof. Sasu Tarkoma and Dr. Roberto Morabito and will be offered fully funded contracts for up to three years.

Requirements and eligibility criteria

A successful candidate should have a master's degree in computer science, electrical engineering, or a related field. The candidate must have scientific curiosity and a meticulous work ethic. Based on the position of interest, prior experience in IoT, embedded and mobile operating systems, and/or cloud computing software is desirable. The candidate must have good organizational and time management skills and be able to work both independently and as part of a team. Excellent communication skills in English, both verbal and written, are expected. The University of Helsinki seeks to promote an equitable and inclusive working environment and welcomes applicants from diverse genders, linguistic and cultural backgrounds.

Applicants who do not currently hold a doctoral study right in the Doctoral Programme in Computer Science (DoCS) at the University of Helsinki are eligible to apply, but in the event of hiring, they are expected to acquire the status during the standard 6-month probationary period. Please check the admission periods and eligibility criteria to DoCS: https://www.helsinki.fi/en/admissions-and-education/apply-doctoral-programmes/doctoral-school-and-doctoral-programmes/doctoral-programmes-natural-sciences/doctoral-programme-computer-science/admissions-doctoral-studies.
