What is the National Organization for oceanography?
Welcome to CSIR - National Institute of Oceanography (NIO)
What do oceanographers do?
An oceanographer studies the ocean. Biological oceanographers and marine biologists study plants and animals in the marine environment. They are interested in the numbers of marine organisms and how these organisms develop, relate to one another, adapt to their environment, and interact with it.
What was the first expedition to explore the ocean?
The first scientific expedition to explore the world's oceans and seafloor was the Challenger Expedition, from 1872 to 1876, on board the British three-masted warship HMS Challenger.
What type of equipment do oceanographers use?
Satellite-based instruments useful to oceanographers studying ocean circulation include altimeters, which register variations in sea level slope that indicate current flow, and infrared sensors that show currents, eddies, and other circulation features.
