The Canadian Encyclopedia is a free, bilingual online resource of over 20,000 fact-checked articles and learning tools about Canada’s history and culture. The Subject Editor, History for The Canadian Encyclopedia will be an individual who is passionate about the work of Historica Canada, has had experience working with a team to achieve deliverables in a... timely fashion, and is enthusiastic about creating a legacy for all Canadians. The successful candidate is creative, driven and connected with like-minded organizations in the public, private and non-profit sectors.

Reporting to the Managing Editor, the key responsibilities of the Subject Editor, History include:
• Overseeing the update of articles and the creation of new articles related to Canadian history;
• Identifying and commissioning new articles and authors, based on production quota;
• Peer reviewing substantive editing produced by other subject editors (outside of specialized portfolio);
• Contributing articles, based on production quota;
• Developing and managing relationships with consultants (contributors, fact-checkers, etc.) to meet editorial deadlines;
• Responding to reader comments;
• Contributing to editorial calendar, including current events, anniversaries and commemorations within the portfolio;
• Tracking expenses, ensuring expenses remain within budgets, and reporting on variances;
• Taking part in strategic planning discussions;
• Representing and promoting the Encyclopedia at educational conferences;
• Consulting with Managing Editor on key editorial decisions and policies;
• Other duties as assigned.

Desired Skills, Knowledge, and Qualifications::
• A degree in History, Canadian Studies, Journalism or equivalent;
• Knowledge of Canadian history and current events;
• Excellent writing and editing skills;
• Excellent research skills, attention to detail;
• Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment;
• Bilingualism (English and French) an asset;
• Knowledge of online media and publishing industry;
• Strong budgeting and time-management skills;
• Editorial experience an asset;
• Professional working experience in the non-profit, heritage or education sector an asset.

Resume and cover letters are reviewed within a week of the posting deadline and prospective candidates will be sent a behavioral assessment PI questionnaire.

Based on the results of the questionnaire, Historica Canada expects to invite 3-5 candidates to an initial interview via video call (approx. 1 hour). This interview will usually be with 2 Historica Canada staff. Some roles may require a short skills test, which would be provided following the interview.

Up to 2 candidates may be moved forward to a second interview with the President and Vice President of Operations and will later be asked to provide references.

We commit to notifying all applicants of the status of their submission within 6 weeks of the application deadline.

This is a contract position beginning April 30, 2023, and ending March 31, 2026 – with strong possibility of extension. The first three months shall be considered as probationary period. The annual salary is $52,400, prorated to length of contract, less applicable statutory deductions, which will be paid to you twice a month.

This position is based at Historica Canada’s Head Office in Toronto. Please note: In accordance with Historica Canada’s Remote Work Policy, staff may choose to work from the office, or continue to work remotely.
