The SF SPCA seeks a seasoned and inspirational Senior Director of Shelter Operations to help implement its ground-breaking strategic plan. For more than 150 years, the SF SPCA has been a nationally recognized leader in animal welfare with a... proven track record of innovation in animal care, animal rights, and proactive prevention programs.

As the fourth oldest humane society in the nation, the SF SPCA has always been at the forefront of animal welfare. In the 1990's, the organization focused on keeping animals in shelters alive until they were adopted and through those efforts, founded the No-Kill movement. In 2012, the SF SPCA created Vision 2020 - a roadmap to end animal abandonment in San Francisco. By addressing issues of overpopulation, barriers to veterinary care, and pet behavior issues, San Francisco now has one of the lowest euthanasia rates in any major city in the United States. Building on the success of previous and existing coalition partnerships, the SF SPCA has pivoted to expand its scope to address unmet needs in animal welfare in California's Central Valley and beyond. Through Vision 2030, the SF SPCA pledges to improve the quality of life for all companion animals, not just those in shelters.

This next frontier focuses on establishing all shelters in California as safe places for dogs and cats to land, aligning local laws with the best outcomes for animals, and strengthening communities' access to care for their pets.

Executing a huge part of the SF SPCA's vision is the Source to Home (STH) Team. This team is responsible for everything from collecting animals from San Francisco Animal Care and Control and Central Valley shelters to caring for their daily needs, treating them medically, working with them behaviorally and, finally, adopting them out into their new, forever homes. The team also includes both the volunteer and foster teams, whose critical work supports all the activities across the STH team and more.

Reporting to the Chief of Rescue and Welfare, the Senior Director of Shelter Operations (SDSO) oversees the heart and soul of the Society's lifesaving work. The position requires someone with a strong passion to close the lifesaving gap in California and a desire to innovate and continuously improve key processes, as well as serve as an inspired leader with deep experience in shelter operations.

The SDSO will manage and provide direct supervision, guidance and mentorship to a team directed by the leaders of Intake, Housing & Shelter Medicine.

The position requires a high level of organization and professionalism; a thorough knowledge of animal welfare best practices; and superior skills in the areas of communication, personnel, budget, quantitative analysis and operations management. The ideal candidate will possess a minimum of seven to ten years of progressively responsible leadership experience in animal sheltering or closely related field. In addition, the Senior Director will create a highly engaged, accountable and effective team culture that recognizes individual and collective success, builds confidence, and promotes a culture of inclusivity and belonging across our diverse workforce. The successful candidate must possess extraordinary communication and listening skills and be an open, results-oriented professional.

The Senior Director of Shelter Operations will :
• Play a key role in developing strategy and goals for the Source-To-Home Team.
• Direct the execution of the Source-To-Home team's rescue and welfare plans in accordance with the team's goals and budget.
• Provide forecasting and plans for meeting capacity to care and adoption goals.

• Provide effective leadership, mentoring and guidance in all fundraising activities including individual and major giving, planned giving, foundation & corporate relations, event management and sponsorship expansion.

• Collaborate with the VP of Community Experience and their department on the development and implementation of a comprehensive communications plan to support development initiatives including Our Animals, annual reports, videos promotional materials and event collateral.
• Challenge the status quo, develop and improve processes, remain ahead of trends, research best practices, navigate key issues, translate challenges and opportunities into actions that achieve goals and align with values and strategic vision.
