Job Description

General:
• Lead the US Sailing Team and all of its associated high‐performance activities, including but not limited to the US Olympic Sailing Team, the Pan American Sailing Team, the Olympic Development Sailing Program, through coaches and program directors for these activities.
• Execute Project Pinnacle, a top-level performance plan and program, to deliver results that put our athletes in positions to gain podium finishes in the Olympic Games, Pan American Games, and World and Intercontinental Championships.
• Develop excellence and professionalism in tandem with US Sailing CEO and senior staff leadership throughout the Olympic department and the US Sailing Association.
• Lead and develop coaches and staff to support athletes in achieving their top level of performance.
• Oversee all performance and performance-related operational aspects of the US Sailing Team including but not limited to athletes, coaches, technology, financials, operations, and logistics.

Operational:
• Develop and execute, in tandem with US Sailing senior staff leadership, the US Sailing Team’s annual and long‐range business plan(s) to achieve the missions stated in Project Pinnacle.
• Create and maintain a permanent training center for the US Sailing Team (in Long Beach or other appropriate location).
• Write and submit the annual High Performance Plan to the Board of Directors and USOPC.
• Collaborate with CEO, SVP Development, and SVP Partnerships and Memberships on team branding, communications, and marketing to enhance the national brand of the US Sailing Team, including athlete promotion, logos, and promotions.
• Promote national awareness of athletes and development of athlete heroes.
• Ensure highest professional standards are met at all team facilities, functions, and environments.
• Develop appropriate Team Agreements and Commercial Agreements with the athletes.
• Collaborate with the CEO, CFO and Board of Directors in consideration of certain partnerships to supplement the US Sailing Team’s operations to further support athlete development.
• Develop structure to allocate resources appropriately based on merit, skill, and cadence.
• Assess resources and allocate objectively in accordance with designated structure, adjusting equitably when resources are limited.

Financial:
• Create annual operating and capital budget for the US Sailing Team and the Olympic Development Program in coordination with CFO and CEO.
• Collaborate with the CFO to prepare required monthly financial reports as required.
• Negotiate, approve and sign agreements within limits of approved budgets. Seek approval of CEO, CFO, and Board, as appropriate, for expenditures outside of approved budgets.
• Oversee purchases and monitor purchasing procedures and requirements for all US Sailing Team and Olympic Development Program assets.
• Ensure proper policies and procedures are in place to protect the US Sailing Team’s physical assets.

Staff Supervision:
• Uphold the “Athletes First Culture” referenced in the core values of the USOPC with fair and transparent systems and policies.
• Work with Olympic department staff to plan, develop and approve specific operational policies, procedures, methods, rules and regulations, training and professional development, work schedules, internal controls and a performance appraisal system for athletes, staff, coaches, and contractors.
• Oversee staff functions and direct responsibility for the Olympic department staff, including:
• Lead staff to achieve goals as outlined in “Operational” above and Project Pinnacle.
• Ensure the highest professional standards in workplace ethics and building a “culture of excellence” within the Team.
• Hire, determine compensation, provide feedback and recognition, and, if necessary, terminate the Olympic department staff in accordance with US Sailing compensation policies and guidelines with support from HR.
• Develop and grow Olympic staff to create a vibrant, growth-oriented staff culture, through strong leadership and role-modeling such culture.
• Apply systems, with support from HR, to monitor staff progress toward its stated goals (KPI’s) and provide feedback and recognition as appropriate, as well as motivation and guidance.
• Ensure that all staff are integrated into US Sailing and operate as one team.

Leadership responsibilities:

External:
• Be a leader and public face of the US Sailing Team.
• Represent the US Sailing Team in all official capacities.
• Participate in selected community activities to enhance the prestige of the US Sailing Team.
• Coordinate Team interaction and relationships with USOPC, World Sailing and additional entities and delegate tasks to staff and or volunteer experts as appropriate.
• Attend Quarterly Athlete Town Halls to be the spokesperson for the vision of the US Sailing Team.
• Ensure adherence to The Ted Stevens Amateur Sports Act, USOPC and US Center for SafeSport compliance and reporting requirements, including ensuring all staff are educated on these requirements and in compliance.
• Interact with and leverage USOPC high performance personnel and resources to ensure best practices in high performance activities and to maximize support for the US Sailing Team.
• Respond to and guide staff, athletes, and coaches in the event of an emergency.
• Ensure that the Team consistently operates in accordance with all applicable local, state, federal, and international laws.

Internal:
• Drive organizational culture as a member of US Sailing Executive Leadership Team.
• Present regular updates to US Sailing Board as required by CEO.
• Serve as a member of International Selection Committee.
• Operate collaboratively with the colleagues of US Sailing Association.
• Support and adhere to all US Sailing policies and the employee handbook.

Resource Generation:
• Support SVP of Development, US Sailing Foundation Board and US Sailing Association Board with fundraising initiatives and donor stewardship.
• Support Marketing department with sponsorship acquisition and fulfillment for all US Sailing Association properties (including the US Sailing Team).
• Identify and obtain, in collaboration with the SVP of Development, grant funding from external sources (government, universities, foundations, etc.)

About the Role

Canal Dock Boathouse seeks a part-time, seasonal Dock Master for Sail Haven, our community sailing program.

Responsibilities include:

Maintaining a boat sign out log for daily boat use by members and classes

Maintains control of time slots and boat use according to previously determined skill levels and membership status

Keeps track of all boats on the water and ensures that all boats and crews return safely

Responsible for rescues of any Sail Haven craft that might be in trouble, such as not being able to recoverfrom a capsize

Must inspect all returning boats for damage and make entries in the maintenance log

Schedules skipper test evaluations for members with available instructors or Senior Sailors

Provides class availability schedules and information to all interested in joining Sail Haven

Must maintain a current list of emergency contacts, liability forms and procedures

Must evaluate the weather and allocate boats and equipment based on weather conditions and skill level

This is a per diem position and considered “non-exempt” as defined by Federal and/or Connecticut law; salary is competitive and commensurate with experience.

The mission of the Boothbay Sea and Science Center is the advancement of sailing, boating and ocean
sciences by minimizing economic and physical obstacles and further to develop independence, self-
confidence, teamwork and volunteerism in the participants. To inspire individuals to strengthen
themselves and their community through the enjoyment of the sea. BSSC vision is a community sailing
and science education center that offers equal and affordable access to waterfront activities for youth
through sailing programs and experiential learning activities not typically provided by other regional
organizations.

Position Summary: Apprentices work in cooperation with the Executive Director, Principal
Marine Science Instructors, Principal Waterfront Instructor, Sailing Instructors, Science
Instructors, and Volunteers of the Boothbay Sea and Science Center to provide a safe, fun,
friendly, and dynamic hands-on learning experience that fosters curiosity, respect, teamwork,
self-confidence, responsible stewardship of the land and sea, and good sportsmanship.

General Duties and Responsibilities, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (include but are not limited to):

Ø Reports to the Executive Director.
Ø Takes direction from the Principal Marine Science Instructors, Principal Waterfront

Instructor.
Ø Participates in the 2023 pre-season staff orientation/work weeks (June 5 - 16) as

negotiated.
Ø Reviews, in the staff “handbook”, all BSSC shoreside and waterfront policies, guidelines, and

procedures prior to first day at BSSC and abides by them, at all times.
Ø Provides input to and assists in the implementation of the Sea and Science curriculum in the

Mizzen I, Mizzen II, Stay’s’l-I and Stay’s’l - II programs.
Ø Maintains a high level of safety related to all BSSC shoreside and on the water activities and

engages in daily dockside and on the water “safety drills” with Instructors and students.
Ø Promotes safe boating and sailing skills (in cooperation with Principal Marine Science

Instructors, Principal Waterfront Instructor, Sailing Instructors, and Science Instructors) -

principles to include but not limited to, weather observation and forecasting, sail trim,
helming/piloting, navigation, tides, currents, and VHF radio communication.

Ø Engages, at all times, in responsible communication skills on and off the water including
appropriate technical boating, sailing and marine science terminology and conduct.

Ø Promotes, at all times amongst the participants, teamwork, good stewardship of the ocean
and citizenship while fostering the love of the sport of boating, sailing and the curiosity of
science.

Ø Supervises program participants during snack time and lunchtime;
Ø attends and participates (if appropriate) in the Center’s Community and Family events.
Ø Participates in the maintenance of boats and other equipment on a daily basis.
Ø Assists with the supervision and the maintenance of all dock areas and promotes good

housekeeping.
Ø Participates in the 2023 post-season closing work week (August 21 – 25) as negotiated.
Ø Attends the Boothbay Sea and Science Center daily staff meetings working with the

Executive Director, Principal Marine Science Instructors, Principal Waterfront Instructor,
Sailing Instructors, and Science Instructors in the planning and evaluation of the Program.

Ø Submits written requests to the Executive Director for absences during workday hours.
Ø Abides by the BSSC Code of Conduct, at all times, and is mindful that all staff, participants

and guests adhere to the same standards of behavior.
Ø Abstains, at all times during the workday and at any time when traveling with Program

participants, from the use of any alcohol or drugs. Any such use during the workday or
during a trip with participants will result in immediate termination.

Education and Experience
