Job Summary
In support of the New York Public Library’s Teens 360º Initiative, the Teen Technology and Design department aims to equip staff with the skills and resources needed to engage teens in creative, interest-driven, technology-based learning in which they express themselves, and build marketable skills such as digital media content creation. The Associate Manager will play a critical role in supporting the department’s efforts in amplifying teen voices by assisting in establishing a strong community of practice amongst NYPL’s teen-serving branch staff in technology education through trainings, resources, activity guides, and tool selection.

We are looking for someone we can count on to:

Own:
• Innovative, flexible programming for teens that centers technology skill building, leadership, voice, play, and connection to their community and peers
• Professional development and resources for staff across our 88 neighborhood locations, with a focus on Teen Centers, that equip staff with the skills and tools needed to offer experiences and programs in which teens learn and create through digital media production, analog and digital making, and other STEAM activities.

Teach:
• Digital media and STEAM educational skills to NYPL colleagues
• Best practices in engaging youth in creative tech programming to NYPL colleagues

Learn:
• How best to showcase teen creativity at NYPL
• How to create meaningful partnerships with organizations that are aligned with NYPL’s mission and can further our work with teens

Improve:
• Quality and creativity of teen technology and making programs
• Teen engagement in creative technology and making programs

Some expectations for this role are that within:

1 month, this person will:
• Comprehend all tech programming for teens at NYPL
• Gain familiarity with our teen center tech starter kits

3 months, this person will:
• Propose a curriculum for teen technology trainings for branch staff utilizing teen center equipment
• Lead teen branch staff tech trainings and identify ways to further improve offerings that is informed by research, staff input, and teens

6 months and beyond, this person will:
• Assess current trends in technology education in libraries and seek ways to improve teen engagement in our programs
• Continue to support Teen Tech & Design department by curating and implementing trainings for staff that seek to improve tech based programming offerings for teens

Responsibilities:
• Assist in the curriculum development for trainings, which support staff in offering engaging tech-based programs to youth
• Develop innovative programs and partnerships that foster teen voice, and creativity, using technology at NYPL’s newly designed Teen Centers
• Mentors library staff in preparing and presenting young adult programs
• Create STEAM programming including gaming programs in collaboration with Young Adult Services department and branch staff
• Aid with the design and implementation of circulating STEAM Discovery Kits
• With the support of IT, assist with basic computer maintenance, including file management, trouble-shooting, and technical support to Teen Tech Center youth and mentors
• Measure success using data and observations
• Perform other duties as required

Required Education, Experience & Skills

• Master’s Degree in Education, Library Sciences, or a related field
Required Experience
• Minimum of three years’ experience working with youth from diverse populations, preferably high school students, in a library, school, or non-profit setting

Required Skills
• Experience and comfort with computers and interest in technology as a creative and empowering tool
• Familiarity with Ableton Live, Audacity, Logic Pro X, and other sound/music software or willingness/ability to learn
• Familiarity with Dremel 3D Printer and related software or willingness/ability to learn
• Experience with the production of digital media including videos, photography and animation or willingness/ability to learn
• Open to learning and utilizing new technologies as needed

The Library is seeking a Children's Librarian to cultivate creative thinkers, enthusiastic readers, skillful researchers, and resourceful users of information. Successful candidates will embody each of these four characteristics themselves.

Key Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Library Manager, the Children's Librarian:
• Provides reference service and resource recommendations using print, media and digital resources
• Collaborates with the Educational Services Department to develop, promote, facilitate, present and evaluate innovative programs to meet the expressed and anticipated needs of the community’s children population including book discussions, author talks, technology classes, financial literacy sessions, arts and wellness activities, and a variety of other programs both in the Library and throughout the community

• Works to engage children with the collection in ways that allow them to follow their interests and discover new ones

• Encourages digital literacy and provides technology instruction
• Develops and maintains the layout and appearance of the children space, ensuring a safe and inviting area filled with relevant resources
