The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission is accepting applications for a Wildlife Conservation Technician I for our Land & Water Access Division - Rhems Depot. This position conducts fish and wildlife habitat management, research, surveys, and infrastructure management on state owned lands or waterways. Project objectives are directed at:

• Providing hunting opportunities for sportsmen;

The Conservation Biologist II / Wildlife Diversity Coastal Waterbird Biologist coordinates surveys, monitoring, restoration, research, and management activities for nongame species in North Carolina, including those activities relating to the design, implementation, analysis, interpretation, and dissemination of population survey and research data on private lands, Game Lands, and other public lands.
The individual in this position coordinates and conducts research and surveys on waterbird populations, including aerial surveys; monitors populations or sub-populations of waterbirds to determine trends, productivity, and/or distribution; compiles and enters data into databases; analyzes data and reports results; engages in habitat and/or land management activities as needed and directed; addresses threats to populations and habitats via research and management; and produces reports and technical, scientific papers for dissemination of findings.
The Wildlife Diversity Coastal Waterbird Biologist reviews and prepares written comments on various beach stabilization projects and on other development projects that may impact nongame wildlife; reviews permit applications, environmental documents, and makes recommendations for conservation; responds to requests from other agencies, organizations, and the public for data, and develops outreach information for dissemination; attends, participates in, and leads regional and/or national technical meetings regarding status and management of high priority wildlife; coordinates and leads stakeholder planning and management meetings within the state for species or habitats as necessary to develop and implement collaborative conservation programs to address priority species' needs; participates in meetings and coordinates with other state and federal agencies to secure permits and conduct habitat management activities identified as priorities in the NC Wildlife Action Plan; and responds to requests for public programs as time allows.
The Wildlife Diversity Coastal Waterbird Biologist will train and supervise 1-3 temporary technicians at any given time working on specific projects and will recruit and train volunteers and participants from other state and federal agencies and organizations to help with surveys, management, and monitoring.
The individual in this position will also examine management implications relative to population dynamics and status so regulations, conservation programs, and associated policies may be based on sound and reliable data.
The Wildlife Diversity Coastal Waterbird Biologist also provides technical guidance on nongame species and their habitats to local, state, and federal government agencies; individual, corporate, and public landowners; non-government conservation organizations; and to the public.
The position coordinates and conducts activities that contribute to sound management of resources including reviewing and commenting upon permit applications, providing guidance for conservation programs for endangered species, and engaging partners within and outside the agency to conduct habitat and/or land management activities.
The biologist is an essential member of the Bird Conservation Leadership Team, which provides statewide leadership for bird conservation.
