The National Geographic Society headquarters, based in Washington, D.C., is undergoing a $300 million public space renovation project to be completed in 2026 (called Base Camp). Components of the new guest experience will include a state-of-the-art lobby/guest hub, theater, iconic photo gallery, exhibition space, immersive walk-through attractions, retail, F&B, rooftop bar, education center, VIP tours and exciting new event space. A fully sustainable, on brand hotel will also be built and operated by a third party on the campus. The capstone of the renovation is a one-of-a-kind nighttime entertainment show on the plaza. The ideal candidate has experience leading project management teams on large and complex projects in a creative environment. This leader is an effective collaborator, who also provides strong structure and process for the team’s success. Your Impact Responsibilities Include: Project Management Team Leadership (70%) Manage, mentor, and develop an existing team of Project Managers and Project Coordinators. Establish and manage the intake and backlog of proposals/requests to enable the efficient use of creative resources and make sure we’re not overcommitted. Ensure interdependencies across project areas are identified effectively and risks are managed preemptively. Design and implement performance targets for Planning & Development department and individual contributors. Provide support to project managers and coordinators to standardize the execution of projects, improving communication and risk management. Over the last twelve years, Pristine Seas, National Geographic’s flagship ocean conservation program has helped to inspire the protection of 26 of the last wild places in the ocean, encompassing more than 6 million square kilometers of ocean. We are seeking a Director, Expeditions, Pristine Seas to support and scale our approach over the next decade to inspire the protection of up to 40 new places. Additionally, we aim to cultivate and expand a network of best-in-class partners to build a community of support for protected areas.

The Director, Expeditions will be supported by the Manager, Expeditions in planning, producing, and managing marine expeditions for Pristine Seas. This position serves as liaison between all departments and the Expeditions team to ensure that the goals and deliverables of the event or expedition project are met and executed.

Your Impact

Responsibilities Include

Marine Expedition Design and Preparation (25%)
• Oversee all planning, designing, preparing, and execution for up to four scouts per year and up to four expeditions per year. Travel required.
• Along with the Manager, Expeditions, act as the primary communicator, department lead, and supervisor of all contractor and staff-related expedition activities
• Along with the Manager, Expeditions, act as the primary liaison between Base Camp and field, implementing the organization’s procedures and guidelines
• Participate in Pristine Seas scouting trips to build partner relationships, assess expedition risk, and make arrangements for team members
• Report back to Base Camp on the status of relationships with our suppliers and partners

Marine Expedition Production & Logistics (25%)
• Along with the Field Specialists, supervise the Pristine Seas warehouse, gear, and equipment including Zodiacs, Hyperbaric Chamber, Compressor, etc.
• Along with the Field Specialists, supervise and act as point of contact for shipping and logistics partner (GAC)
• Along with the Field Specialists, supervise and act as point of contact for field communication partner (Resudox)
• Along with the Manager, Expeditions and the Expedition Leader, oversee the creation of the expedition schedule, team list/crew rotations, and logistics
• Along with the Manager, Expeditions, collaborate with the Expedition Leader, Field Specialists, and NGS Nurse to ensure safe operations and risk management

Marine Expedition Field Management and Leadership (50%)
• Act as Expedition Leader and/or Dive Safety Officer on specific expeditions when appropriate
• Lead and organize daily on-board safety trainings, cultural trainings, meetings, briefings, and drills
• Consistently communicate and maintain Pristine Seas' philosophy, history, and values with all staff, contractors, and crew on-board
• Supervise Field Specialists, medical support, and additional contract staff if required
• Assist with many aspects of Zodiac operations for nearshore and deepsea filming and scientific data collection
• Participates in scientific data collection activities when necessary

10+ years of professional work experience in a related industry including producing and managing expeditions or fieldwork. Experience in the non-profit and/or environmental sector is preferred but not required.

Your Impact

Responsibilities Include

Travel Logistics and Scheduling (40%)
• Assist the Senior Director, Business Operations and Manager, Business Operations by supporting up to four scouts per year and up to four expeditions per year. Some travel may be required.

The Advancement team cultivates, solicits, and stewards individuals, as well as foundation, government and corporate partners who invest in the Society to drive impact through science, technology, education, exploration, and storytelling. The team collaborates with Society teams – and often works closely with NGP/Disney – to build transformative and impact-driven strategic... partnerships. The team also produces global events that deepen connections and leverage the Society’s power to convene, and directs robust annual, major and planned giving programs empowering the Society with a broad base of public support.

The Global Special Events team of the National Geographic Society is responsible for developing and producing high quality, impactful events that use the power of convening to drive programmatic outcomes, further visibility for our executives, programs, and talent, and build donor loyalty and philanthropic support. The Coordinator, Global Special Events reports to the Vice President of Global Special Events and assists the VP with general administration for the Global Special Events team at National Geographic Society.

Your Impact

Responsibilities Include

Administrative Support for Vice President of Global Special Events (50%):
• Coordinates and maintains the Vice President’s calendars to optimize time and provide information sharing.
• Develops and distributes meeting agendas for internal and external meetings and books meeting rooms for in-person meetings.
• Monitors deadlines, follows up on delegated tasks, and provides appropriate reminders.
• Coordinates all aspects of travel and develops trip and/or event briefing packets for the Vice President before every event and work trip.
• Assists with preparation of presentations and materials for internal and external meetings.
• Drafts, proofreads, and edits mailings, correspondence, memorandums, pre-approved contract templates and other documents as needed.
• Coordinates expenses by collecting receipts, coding expense reports, and submitting reimbursement requests.
• Coordinates staff and outside meetings including preparation of agenda, invitation lists, materials, meeting room, and coordinates AV to connect remote staff.

Support for Global Special Events team (30%):
• Maintains and distributes Global Special Events team calendars
• Ensures NGS Enterprise Calendar is up to date regularly with our team’s events
• Creates calendar holds for all events with the appropriate attendees from Advancement and the Senior Leadership team
• Ensures timely payment of office invoices by signing, scanning, and submits invoices in an efficient manner.
• Maintains and organizes the team’s filing system in DropBox and Google Drive.
• Assists in the coordination of cross-divisional projects as needed, interfacing with relevant departments within the Society, NGP, regional offices as well as external partners
• Speaker & Talent Management Support:
• Supports travel and hotel booking and tracking for program participants/VIPs
• Supports speaker management for events including speaker agreements and scheduling rehearsals
• Coordinates asset collection for speaker assets across all events (headshot and bios)
• Supports event planning and execution as needed

Registration and Database Coordination (20%)
• Supports correspondence with event attendees through phone and email.
• Helps in pulling, cleaning and organizing RSVP and session reports to distribute across teams and departments.
• Supports ensuring back-end registration and data hygiene
• Works with Advancement Operations to track and report on event attendance in Raiser’s Edge database

What You’ll Bring

Educational Background

Bachelor’s degree preferred

Minimum Years And Type Of Experience

2+ years professional work experience; development or events experience preferred

Necessary Knowledge and Skills
• Strong and effective written and oral communication skills; proven ability to communicate clearly and concisely to various audiences’ enterprise-wide
• Ability to exercise good judgment and work with minimum of instruction and supervision when necessary
• Must be detail-oriented, organized, and capable of managing multiple projects simultaneously
• Ability to maintain high standards of confidentiality.
• Proactive and professional demeanor when interacting with NGS staff, senior executives, high net worth individuals, and donors.
• The ability to work in a fast-paced environment is required.
• Flexibility to attend evening and weekend events, as well as travel domestically or internationally
• Proficient in Word, PowerPoint, etc., and able to learn new software quickly.

As a leading nonprofit organization, National Geographic Society offers competitive salary and total rewards to attract, develop, and retain an innovative and dynamic workforce.

The hourly range for this position starts at $23.08.

Job Designation

Resident - Our Resident category recognizes that certain staff need to be physically present at Base Camp to do their work. Some Resident staff must always be onsite to do their jobs, while others may only need to be physically present some of the time. Some Resident staff may need to come into Base Camp every day, some may need to come in to meet looming deadlines and to get work done, and others may require a more unique schedule. The days Resident staff come into the office will be determined by their teams and workflow, and they should work with their supervisors to determine their specific schedule. And throughout the year, their schedule can be adjusted based on cyclical work cycles, deadlines, and/or ebbs and flows of work. As a guideline, Resident staff will be in the office between 3-5 days a week.
