The Legislation Services Team at The National Archives is responsible for legislation.gov.uk, the official home of UK legislation. A free service covering new and revised legislation for the whole of the UK, it is a vital resource which has transformed public access to the law, and how legislation is created and understood.
Legislation has undergone a data revolution, with digital technology... enabling new ways of creating, amending, researching and understanding the law. legislation.gov.uk has been at the heart of this. The service is driven by its data – we are a data-first service – the legislation documents are managed and published in a variety of data formats, and we are creating new datasets all the time. We have data showing how laws interact with each other, and change over time, where they apply geographically, and how often they are viewed online. We have created new tools to enable the research and analysis of legislation – asking questions of the statute book that it’s never been possible to answer before.

Reporting to the Legislation Data Scientist, you will take ownership of, and responsibility for, the production of ongoing data analytics and reports to support the editorial and publishing processes for legislation.gov.uk, ensuring that the service is maintained to a high standard of currency and quality, and meets the needs of our users.
You will ensure that statistics are produced in response to queries from users and a range of stakeholders in The National Archives and across government, often at short notice and to tight deadlines. About you

Legislation publishing is a specialist area with very specific challenges, which has led us to develop a complex and unique platform using state-of-the-art technologies. You will have an enquiring mind, an interest in the application of data to real-world problem solving, and the technical skills required to do so, including advanced Excel and data manipulation skills, and experience working with XML and/or HTML. You will have an appetite for experimenting with new technologies and approaches, proactively seeking out new ways of doing things and learning new skills in support of our goals.
We are looking for someone who is personable, flexible, willing to learn, detail-focused, a great team player – whilst being able to work independently – with the ability to convey complicated technical ideas in an easy to understand way. Any first-hand experience of working with legal or regulatory materials would be helpful, however, more important is a genuine passion for what we’re trying to achieve, and curiosity about the potential of legislation data.
This is a full time post. However, requests for part-time working, flexible working and job share will be considered, taking into account at all times the operational needs of the Department.
A combination of onsite and home working is available; applicants should be able to regularly travel to our Kew site.

You will play an active role in helping us grow our digital capability, skills and culture through helping set and raise standards by mentoring colleagues and creating and reviewing code.
As we transition from our current technology stack to the new offering, we are looking for a Senior Software Developer to join our team to provide ongoing support and some further development to our .Net applications and to help develop and deliver our new Python based applications. We are therefore looking to recruit a senior C# developer with Python development experience or vice versa a senior Python developer with C# experience. For either, the candidate will also need to have good database administration and development experience, preferably including knowledge of administration and indexing of Elasticsearch.
On the Microsoft side, our applications range from Classic ASP, through .Net Framework 4.8 with WCF services to .Net Core apps hosted on Kubernetes, using SQL Server, MongoDB and Elasticsearch (AWS Opensearch).
On the Python side, we are building applications with a Wagtail CMS using Django web and rest frameworks connecting through APIs to an Elasticsearch data store.
We provide the opportunity to use or learn a wide range of skills with excellent training and development opportunities and an agreed development plan.
Our offices are located in a beautiful setting by the River Thames in Kew with good transport links. Remote working is currently available but some on site working will be required in the future.

Responsibilities
As Senior Software Developer at The National Archives you will need to have:
• Significant experience of modern multi-tier software development with good working knowledge of C# and of Python. For this role in particular, experience of the Django web and rest frameworks and/or Wagtail development would be a benefit

• Experience of Test-driven development, unit, integration and acceptance testing and the principles of continuous integration and continuous delivery
