Job Summary:

Job Summary:
With limited oversight, lead and participate in design development for exhibitions large and small, and help generate the overall vision for 2D design at the Aquarium. Generate graphic designs, concepts, proposals and iterative design solutions for permanent and temporary exhibitions, and for educational and operational projects. As a key member of the Exhibition Design team and as part of a creative team that includes content and A/V media developers, production staff, and project managers, the Senior Exhibition Graphic Designer plays a critical role and must work well in a collaborative environment and demonstrate a strong commitment to creating meaningful public experiences for diverse audiences. Core Activities:
• Conceptualize and share graphic design concepts for new and existing aquarium exhibits through sketches, diagrams, look and feel boards, typographic and color palettes, conceptual drawings, and sketch models.
• Generate detailed graphic design documents that represent design ideas and solutions, including, but not limited to: sketches, diagrams, layouts, drawings, physical and digital models, and detailed production drawings and specifications.
• Lead coordination of graphic design process; research colors, fonts, precedents; share drafts, integrate edits, manage workflows, integrate feedback and change requests into designs.
• Problem-solve and strategize with peers in 3D design, content, animal care, project management, production, film & video, marketing, membership, and multimedia to meet project goals and deadlines.
• Create and source imagery, maps, drawings, charts, etc. for use in exhibition and interpretive materials.
• Participate in generating RFQs and RFPs to engage outside consultants, art directors, illustrators, fabricators, photographers, printers, and designers as needed, sharing relevant project information and designs, evaluating submittals, making recommendations to the team, and coordinating consultant work through the duration of a project.
• Research and specify materials and graphic production processes; lead work in cost estimating and value engineering as needed.
• Mentor and coach emerging colleagues.
• Advise on best practices in accessibility, equity, and inclusivity, integrating them throughout all phases of design and production.

• Provide technical assistance to other departments as required to develop their capital construction projects or other construction projects.
• Chair the Aquarium Properties Committee.
• Develop and train other staff on new processes, standards and procedures to implement strategic project goals completely and efficiently.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):
• BA or MA in business administration, engineering, architecture, management, or a related field; or equivalent combination of education, training and experience
• Minimum 10 years of project management experience and supervisory experience
• Project Management, LEED, AIA or PLA certification required or equivalent experience
• A long standing professiona/expert project manager with a track record of delivering successful projects and providing guidance and oversight for other staff
• Ability to identify high-risk aspects of major projects and develop effective strategies to address these risks
• Ability to keep large and/or complex projects focused, on track, and in line with Aquarium goals and mission
• Exemplary leadership qualities with strong team building, communication and active listening skills required
• Advanced experience with facilitation and design thinking, and ability to train others on these processes
• Adept at creating structure around collaborative teams to create an environment where everyone can do their best work while adhering to project and institutional constraints
• Experience establishing transparent accountability through all project phases with project team members, outside contractors and Aquarium leadership
• Experience supervising and mentoring staff throughout the Aquarium who participate in, and contribute to, projects.
• Proven experience prioritizing complex workloads across multiple projects, delegating appropriately and adhering to critical project timing while using good judgment, problem-solving skills and follow-through
• Proven experience maintaining safety standards on all site work for projects, including internal staff and contractors
• Ability to work with contractors to recognize and direct remediation of common construction hazards such as elevated work, confined spaces, hazardous chemicals and the hazardous release of stored energy
• Competence with various software applications (e.g., Google docs, PowerPoint, budget spreadsheets, project management, email)
• Experience preparing and managing large project budgets from conceptual square-foot budgets and detailed estimates, through cost-to-complete tracking
• Mastery knowledge and experience reading, interpreting, and notating architectural and technical drawings
• Mastery knowledge with construction and specialty exhibit fabrication
• Mastery knowledge of Agile, Waterfall, and/or Sprint project management methods
• Experience with AutoCAD
• Ability to work within and maintain Monterey Bay Aquarium's Core Values
