Job Summary

The Head Team Physician works as part of the Harvard University Health Services (HUHS) staff, both overseeing the care of the student athlete population and as a primary care physician (PCP) at HUHS (50% of time for each role). The Head Team Physician is responsible for providing care to the student-athletes, providing emergency services as a sideline physician for high-risk sports, supervising a team of athletic trainers, and helping coordinate other team physicians at Harvard Athletics. While serving as a PCP at HUHS, the physician provides comprehensive primary health care to a panel of patients consisting of the University's population of students, faculty, staff, retirees, and their adult dependents. As part of a clinical team of physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, and health assistants, the physician provides high quality and compassionate care.
Position Description

Head Team Physician
• Works with a diverse population to provide culturally sensitive care.
• Provides sideline event coverage, directing the care of student athletes receiving care from a staff comprised of highly skilled athletic trainers, physical therapists, sports dietician, chiropractors, mental health clinicians, and orthopedists including providing regular sessions at the Dillon Field House (DFH) as a partner to the department of medicine.
• Provides medical care to varsity athletes during 3 sessions a week at the Dillon Field House including holidays.
• Meets weekly with Head Athletic Trainer/Associate Athletic Director for Student Health and Wellness.
• Provides clinical supervision to athletic training staff.
• Collaborates and coordinates with Orthopedics department for patient care and team coverage.
• Communicates with and provides support to teams, athletic trainers, coaches, parents, and other University constituents regarding issues such as hospital follow-up, concussion management, and infectious outbreak mitigation.
• Travels with teams on weekends, evenings, and holidays.
• Provides on-site physician coverage for any hosted NCAA event or Ivy League championship.
• Manages all varsity athlete concussions following protocols and guidelines (typically 50-80 cases/year).
• Determines eligibility, as well as return-to-play status, which may include integrating multiple outside opinions and factors for a variety of medical conditions.
• Develops and reviews sports medicine policies for student-athletes.
• Organizes and performs pre-participation sports physical exams for student- athletes including working with the athletic training staff, MGH cardiology, practice managers, physicians, and nursing staff at HUHS.
• Continues research studies, as well as plans new ones, to advance the field of athletics and sports medicine, including involvement in IRBs and continuing review.
• Precepts two PMR fellows, four ortho fellows, occasionally one primary care resident, and three Harvard Sports Medicine athletic training fellows for one month during their 1-year fellowship program.
• Participates in various committees and work groups according to the needs of HUHS.
• Coordinates annual influenza clinic in the athletic training room.
• Recruits orthopedists, including performing outreach, reviewing applications, and conducting interviews.
• Participates in national sports medicine professional meetings and the Ivy League Sports Medicine Group.
Primary Care Physician
• Demonstrates cultural sensitivity and empathy for all patients of Harvard's diverse patient population.
• Has outpatient responsibilities for acute, chronic, and preventive care as a practicing physician. Acts as backup support for Urgent Care providers.
• Oversees the care of a panel of primary care patients, attending to patient needs both in the office and between visits, by reviewing care received outside HUHS, laboratory data, secure messages from HUHS care providers and from the patients themselves, and ordering tests as needed to ensure maintenance of health and appropriate management of chronic medical conditions.
• Coordinates the primary care provided to adult members of our diverse community at HUHS, including all undergraduate and graduate/professional Harvard-affiliated students, regardless of the duration of academic studies, as well as faculty, staff, retirees, and dependents. PCPs directly manage general medical problems of an acute and chronic nature, and place special emphasis on preventive health and education.
• Performs complete physical exams at a frequency appropriate to age and gender and order appropriate laboratory, x-ray, and other diagnostic and medical procedures to meet short-term health care needs, maintain health, and prevent disease.
• Plans, directs, and coordinates the acute medical care, treatment of chronic disease, and health promotion of all adult HUHS patients.
Basic Qualifications
Required - Graduate of a U.S. based residency program; board certified or eligible in Internal Medicine or Family Practice with current licensure in Massachusetts (or ability to obtain licensure). Must have current BLS/ACLS and CAQSM certification and 2 years of experience working with a college athletic program.

Other Requirements - Must be able to work and travel evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Additional Qualifications and Skills
Preferred - Commitment to high quality, cost-effective health care and the principles of group practice. Experience with the full spectrum of primary care general medicine ranging from adolescent to geriatric ages. Demonstrated skills in outpatient clinical care, effective communication skills, and shared decision-making.

Physical Requirements

• Works closely with other members of their primary care team (nurse practitioner, team nurse, and health assistants). Serves as a consultant for team nurse practitioners.

The Health Assistant II provides clinical and administrative support according to coverage needs. The India Health System Reform (https://sites.sph.harvard.edu/india-health-systems/) project is a large-scale effort to advance India’s goal of universal health coverage – providing affordable and equitable access to good quality care for all without major financial hardship – through rigorous research, executive training and mentoring for promising junior health policy/system researchers in India, and other activities. The work portfolio includes in-depth engagement with interested states in India to conduct evidence-based assessments of health system performance and experimentation of innovative models of health financing, health care delivery, strategic purchasing, and governance. Led by the principal investigator, Professor Winnie Yip, the India Health System project brings together a vibrant team of faculty and researchers with disciplinary expertise in economics, evaluation science, health policy and management, clinical medicine, organizational behavior, and political science. The project is funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Specific responsibilities

This Research Associate will develop and execute a research agenda together with Professor Winnie Yip and other team members.

1. Design and conduct health system performance assessment in interested states, including but not limited to empirical analysis of large survey data sets, interviews, and routinely collected administrative data that represent the health care delivery system in both public and private sectors.

2. Contribute substantially to the design, implementation, and evaluation of experiments in innovative models of financing, health care delivery, strategic purchasing and/or governance.

3. Contribute substantially to the design and execution of studies analyzing the roles of public and private sectors in primary care financing and delivery.

4. Ensure smooth running of research studies and fieldwork in India by developing and maintaining regular communications with field partners and donor agency representatives, apprising the Harvard team leadership of problems and solutions related to the progress of project deliverables.

5. Participate in capacity-building and training activities for Indian researchers/analysts on health system and policy research and innovation.

6. Guide and supervise Boston-based research assistants in relevant areas of expertise.

7. Write-up research results, including contributing to project reports and co/lead-authoring scientific papers and publishing in leading journals.

8. Actively engage in dissemination activities and deliver effective presentations as part of policy analysis and dialogue with interested stakeholders including government officials and donor agencies.

Basic Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have a combination of experience that includes having conducted field research in India as well as having completed an academic doctorate related to health systems reform. Specific qualifications include:

· At least two years of field experience directly involved with health policy and reform in India.

· At least two years of experience managing relationships related to internationally-funded development organizations in India, such as the World Bank and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

· Doctoral qualification in fields related to health policy/health systems with strong disciplinary training in social science, especially in the fields of health economics, industrial organization, organizational behavior, political economy, or public health.

· At least three years of postdoctoral research or equivalent experience.

· Demonstrated ability to conduct collaborative research and work independently in the design and monitoring of research studies and interventions.

· Evidence of research management expertise, including the supervision of research staff.

· The appointment is two years.

Chan School of Public Health seeks to hire a Program Manager for the Harvard China Health Partnership (HCHP) under the supervision of Dr. Winnie Yip, Professor of Global Health Policy and Economics and Faculty Director of HCHP.
The Harvard China Health Partnership (HCHP) is the School-wide nexus for scholarship on health care in China, building on the Chan School's long history of collaboration with China and supporting the goals of the Department of Global Health and Population (GHP) to improve global health through education, research, and service from a population-based perspective. The Program Manager will help HCHP advance relationships with over a dozen collaborating academic institutions and government agencies in China through a wide range of activities such as research projects, executive training courses, forums/seminars, and exchange of scholars. The Program Manager will have stellar language and cultural skills in Chinese and English and the ability to coordinate with academic and government entities in China in order to maintain and advance the decades-long relationships of HCHP. The Lee Kum Sheung Center for Health and Happiness, based in the Department of Social and Behavioral Science, aims to build a rigorous and interdisciplinary science of positive health, happiness, and well-being with a focus on health equity, and to translate the science to influence practice and policy. The Initiative on Health, Religion, and Spirituality at Harvard University aims to integrate issues of religion and spirituality into both academic research and also medical and public health practice. The Initiative brings together faculty, clinicians, students, researchers, and clergy throughout Harvard University to contribute to and increase the understanding of the intersection between religion, spirituality, and health. The Human Flourishing Program at Harvard’s Institute for Quantitative Social Science aims to study and promote human flourishing, and to develop systematic approaches to the synthesis of knowledge across disciplines. The faculty member to be hired in this search will be encouraged to leverage the wealth of opportunities across the School and the University to support their research.

Basic Qualifications

The successful applicant will develop a robust research program that integrates mindfulness into major topics related to public health. Other duties include teaching and mentoring graduate students. The search committee welcomes applications from individuals with a broad range of relevant scholarship and experience in public health and related areas, including but not limited to nutrition, planetary health, economics, psychology, exercise science, and social and behavioral sciences. Applicants should hold a doctoral degree in public health or in a related area or will have a medical degree and formal training in public health. Experience in mindfulness education or practice is desirable.

Harvard Medical School (HMS) seeks an experienced and creative scientific administrator as the next Executive Director of Research Initiatives in the Office for Research Operations and Global Programs. The Office for Research Operations and Global Programs (ROGP) oversees interdepartmental and inter- institutional research initiatives totaling ~$70M in annual funding across 280+ individual research projects, and is led by Dean David Golan. The Executive Director will work closely with Dean Golan, and will partner with leaders throughout the School to advance major initiatives on a wide range of topics.

The areas in which the Executive Director will focus include:

Strategic and Operational Support of Existing Initiatives

The Executive Director will advise and support two major initiatives, as well as other existing initiatives. The major efforts include the Therapeutics Initiative, which leverages translational research programs and partnerships to accelerate translation of the world-class fundamental science at HMS toward the medicines of tomorrow, and the Massachusetts Consortium on Pathogen Readiness (MassCPR), which brings together researchers across Massachusetts to address the current global COVID-19 pandemic and better position the country and the world for potential future outbreaks.

Development of New Initiatives

The Executive Director will lead the design and integration of scientific and operational components for new research initiatives. In collaboration with HMS departments and faculty, the Executive Director will spearhead the conversion from conceptual design into full-scale programs, including soliciting funding through proposals to prospective funders. As a program is launched, the Executive Director may work with faculty and staff to initiate an internal award process, oversee events such as panel discussions or press briefings, and write programmatic reports to funders or School leadership. The Executive Director is expected to have the aptitude to assess and set a course of action for highly complex environments and to demonstrate situational leadership and creative problem-solving. As part of this, the Executive Director will be expected to advise and support faculty as well mentor staff.

Strategy and Personnel Management

The Executive Director will work with the Office’s leadership team to set annual goals and strengthen the Office’s culture and values. As the office scope and operations expand, the Executive Director will contribute to assessing the organizational design and ensuring that individual teams are coordinated and working toward shared goals. The Executive Director will manage inter-team initiatives, mentor direct reports, and further integrate HMS diversity and inclusion goals into the Office’s strategy and operations.

Advisory Role

The Executive Director will serve as a resource for the entire HMS community, by participating in schoolwide committees and working groups. A key responsibility will be to cultivate and maintain relationships across all levels and impact areas beyond the Office; in particular, the Executive Director will inform and consult directly with the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine’s Office team. The Executive Director may also serve as a peer reviewer for award solicitation processes in coordination with review panels of academic and industry experts.

Basic Qualifications
• Ph.D. or equivalent in life sciences or a related field.
• At least 10 years of experience in complex scientific program management or related fields.
• At least 10 years of supervisory/management experience.
