The Deputy Program Director will help advance the program’s research, analysis, policy prescriptions and advocacy activities, working closely with the program’s cross-disciplinary staff to conceive, draft and edit new outputs. The successful candidate will be a talented writer and editor and have subject matter expertise in at least one of the thematic areas covered by the program.
Responsibilities:
Helps plan and execute the program’s research and advocacy agenda, particularly by working closely with program staff to develop written outputs;
Edits early drafts of written outputs;
Responds to program requests for input and assistance;
Drafts relevant portions of annual reports, core reports, and other materials as necessary, in consultation with Communications, Development and other Units of the organisation;
Provides analytic support and policy advice to Crisis Group’s regional programs on topics about which the successful candidate has relevant knowledge and experience;
Stays abreast of international developments in conflict and crisis management and disseminates information and analysis as relevant to the program and organisation;
Supports fundraising efforts with selected governments, foundations and private donors through meetings and other outreach, with the assistance of the development team;
In collaboration with the Director of Global Advocacy, maintain and improve Crisis Group’s advocacy efforts by promoting the adoption by concerned actors of the organisation’s policy recommendations, as articulated in reports, briefings and other published materials; and
Assists the Program Director with administrative responsibilities and takes on other tasks as requested by the Program Director.
Requirements include:
Advanced university degree in international relations, political science, economics, journalism, sociology, or the like;
10+ years professional experience in conflict analysis, journalism, NGO, INGO, or government work, ideally including experience in a region covered by Crisis Group and ideally including editing experience;
Excellent writing, analytical and editing skills, and ability to formulate well-targeted policy recommendations;
Expertise in at least one thematic area covered by the program and extensive contacts within the relevant governments, international organisations and non-governmental organisation;
Fluency in English (oral and written) required; knowledge of another UN language a plus;
Familiarity with quantitative methods is an advantage but not required;
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including good public presentation skills, and experience in a supervisory role;
Willingness to travel frequently;
