Under the general supervision of the Director of Internal Controls, UW MEDICINE CONTROL the SENIOR GRANTS & PROJECTS ANALYST serves as one of the content experts and resources for grant and contract proposals, pre-award management and compliance. This position is also responsible for coordinating and providing direct support for grants and contracts at UW Medicine.

The SENIOR GRANTS & PROJECTS ANALYST serves as an internal control resource for hospitals and health system leadership. The position will work closely with department managers as well as finance leadership and staff to prioritize, coordinate, and implement improvements. It is also responsible for assisting in the management of the UW Medicine internal controls policy program for UW Medicine. UW Medicine includes Harborview Medical Center, UW Medical Center - Montlake, UW Medical Center - Northwest, Valley Medical Center, UW Neighborhood Clinics, UW Physicians, UW School of Medicine, and Airlift Northwest.

This position is responsible for assisting with creating standardized processes for the hospitals, and providing centralized support for grants, contracts, and student affiliation agreements, including budget development, application and ongoing compliance and pre-award monitoring

The SENIOR GRANTS & PROJECTS ANALYST will also research federal, state, county and other policy and regulator guidance and serve as one of the content experts and resources for grant and contract proposals, pre-award management and compliance. Test and monitor control risk areas and areas related to grants and contracts across the health system, respond to department inquiries for information, and perform training in areas related to grant policies and regulations and internal controls.

Required
• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Business or related field
• 4-5 years’ experience
• Grant and contract management experience and solid understanding of complex grant regulations.
• Internal audit or internal controls experience in a large hospital or healthcare system. Academic Medical Center or large integrated health system experience is preferred.
• Strong understanding of internal control guidelines.
• In-depth knowledge of hospital business operations, financial analysis and current in new regulations and trends.
• Demonstrated ability and/or experience handling high volume and diverse tasks, under deadlines, with consistently excellent accuracy and attention to detail.
• Functional knowledge and proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Access, and Word.
• Strongly collaborative working style.

The UW MEDICINE FINANCE AND BUDGET has an exciting opportunity for a COST ACCOUNTING ANALYST

The COST ACCOUNTING ANALYST is responsible for creating and maintaining UW Medicine’s internal cost system, creating, and maintaining metrics, statistics, and other tabular data key to the costing process for Harborview Medical Center and University of Washington Medical Center. This position will reconcile and maintain educational and knowledge-based material for other analysts using the encounter-based costing resulting from the costing step down process.

This position collaborates frequently with IT to identify break/fit issues within the data feeds, explores software capabilities and problem solving. The Cost Accounting Analyst will also use the subsequent cost detail in ad hoc health care analyses ranging from utilization management, organizational improvement, performance improvement and quality improvement. This position works in conjunction with Medical Centers leadership and management staff in pursuit of costing statistics and metrics needed to appropriately cost unique services.

This position works in collaboration with all other UW Medicine Finance staff in the pursuit of healthcare analytics. Frequently works independently with short turnaround times, incomplete information and complex analytics that must support effective financial decision-making. Due to our complex ITS infrastructure at UW Medicine, analyst must frequently build sophisticated SQL queries and/or work with complex databases and challenging data structures that require thoughtful data analysis to gather and evaluate results. This position supports many entities within UW Medicine – due to legacy legal structures -- all of these have different data sources, G/L constructs and variations and yet this position must effectively present costing products that crosses these entities.

DUTIES
• Perform monthly and/or quarterly cost updates on the encounter system and audit/reconcile results at each interim step to ensure integrity of results.
• Perform quarterly reconciliations of encounter data (costs and revenues) to the general ledger and audited financial statements.
• Provide monthly and quarterly costing communications to analysts.
• Maintain existing and engage in periodic development of new or improved cost metrics and standards for Harborview Medical Center and Medical Center and University of Washington Medical Center used in allocation of general ledger expense to the encounter system.
• Recommends, improves or creates new costing processes to support management, department or clinical database structures.
• Researches and recommends procedure/department level costing improvements through literature or best practice.
• Maintains existing and establishes standard documentation of costing methodologies and processes. a. Assists with internal analysts’ questions and customer support regarding cost data fields in existing systems and applications as needed (costing process, data and fields, primary role; all other fields, secondary role).
• Maintains and, if necessary, establishes all statistics, data tables and standards that are used within the costing process.
• Reach out and develop with UWMC & HMC leadership and management key costing metrics used within costing at the procedure level to assure procedures and services are costed with the most up to date understanding within operations. Provide module maintenance and support for McKesson’s Performance Manager (PM) with ITS and the Finance system coordinator.
• Provide periodic workshops, one-on-one training for analysts and external consumers of cost.
• Researches and reports errors found in database fields and/or coordinates support calls with Information Technology.
• Participates in departmental team and staff meetings.
• Participates in improving Job Description, task lists and skills development for ongoing performance enhancement.

Analytics include:
• Financial Analyses: cost analyses, payback analyses, proforma or business plan support analyses, contribution margin or other financial analyses as directed.
• Ad hoc analyses using encounter data on key populations for pricing, revenue, costing and/or reimbursement.
• Discovery Analyses on new processes or business direction.
• Participates in developing departmental services through team building, research or other activities to improve intradepartmental relationships with managers or committees that are seeking Finance, Decision Support assistance.
• Lead responsibilities include understanding the relationship between the encounter data, financial data and statistical data to ensure integrity of results.

Required

Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, or related field

3 years of progressively responsible experience in accounting with a preference in cost accounting.

Ability to prepare complex financial analysis and interpretations with high degree of accuracy. Proven analytical, verbal, and written communication skills.

Equivalent Experience May Substituted For Requirements.

DESIRED

Master’s degree in Accounting, Health Care Administration, Business Administration, or Finance preferred but not required. Prior experience with healthcare encounter costing, Lean and process improvement experienced desired but not required.
