Job Description

Job Description Summary

Reporting to the Associate University Librarian for Impact
Assessment and Organizational Analysis, the UX Researcher and
Designer uses established research and statistical methods to
study, analyze, and recommend improvements to service delivery in
order to ensure effective alignment with user needs. The services
in scope for UX research and design comprise physical library
spaces, analog and digital business processes-- such as circulation
and online system authentication - access to digital and print
collections, and digital interfaces along with their related
affordances, including the Penn Libraries website
(library.upenn.edu), its discovery platform, Franklin, research
guides, and host of other web-based properties. The UX Researcher
and Designer will also inform our understanding of factors that
comprise a positive sense of place among our many user populations.
They will advocate for users, understand their pain points, and
identify emerging needs as pedagogy, learning styles and research
practices change.

This position works in concert with a wide range of users to
observe, assess, and document the interactions between people and
various kinds of systems, both technical and organizational, with
the goal of optimizing system performance and user satisfaction.
Employing protocols for usability testing and design thinking, the
UX Researcher/Designer will inform the development of ergonomic
systems and service functions as Penn adapts to the digital
transformations within the library arena and the academy
generally.

As a key member of the Impact and Assessment group, the UX
Researcher and Designer fosters a culture of assessment and
data-informed decision-making; they advance best practices

Libraries' partners-in-service across Penn. They will conceive and
conduct quantitative and qualitative surveys, focus groups, A/B/N

• Lead research projects ranging in variety from single-question
surveys to in-depth interviews and usability testing
• Translate research findings into actionable recommendations and
