The University of Alaska Fairbanks Department of Communication invites applications for a tenure-track position (nine-month appointment) at the level of Assistant Professor of Communication. The successful applicant will be qualified to teach Public Relations, Science Communication, Pedagogy & Higher Education Instruction, Communication & the Military, and Gender Studies at the upper-division and graduate levels; teach general education courses in communication to support the general education curriculum; and advise undergraduate and graduate students.
The candidate is expected to serve on department, College of Liberal Arts, and university-wide committees; perform community outreach; and perform other duties as assigned.
We are especially interested in applicants who bring complementary areas of expertise that will diversify our course offerings. Complementary areas of expertise that particularly interest the department are Environmental Communication, Indigenous studies, critical cultural studies, and LGBTQ+ studies.
This faculty member will also play a critical role in supporting the administration of the communication center, basic course, and program assessment. The ideal applicant will have direct experience working in each of these areas.
This faculty member will also support the University's efforts to achieve R1 status. The ideal candidate will have experience publishing in academic/scholarly literature, presenting at regional, national, & international conferences, & collaborating with local, state, and federal agencies.

The University of Alaska Fairbanks Department of Communication invites applications for a tenure-track position (nine-month appointment) at the level of Assistant Professor of Communication. The successful applicant will be qualified to teach Public Relations, Science Communication, Pedagogy & Higher Education Instruction, Communication & the Military, and Gender Studies at the upper-division and graduate levels; teach general education courses in communication to support the general education curriculum; and advise undergraduate and graduate students.
The candidate is expected to serve on department, College of Liberal Arts, and university-wide committees; perform community outreach; and perform other duties as assigned.
We are especially interested in applicants who bring complementary areas of expertise that will diversify our course offerings. Complementary areas of expertise that particularly interest the department are Environmental Communication, Indigenous studies, critical cultural studies, and LGBTQ+ studies.
This faculty member will also play a critical role in supporting the administration of the communication center, basic course, and program assessment. The ideal applicant will have direct experience working in each of these areas.
This faculty member will also support the University's efforts to achieve R1 status. The ideal candidate will have experience publishing in academic/scholarly literature, presenting at regional, national, & international conferences, & collaborating with local, state, and federal agencies.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
Knowledge of Public Relations, Science Communication, Pedagogy & Higher Education Instruction, Communication & the Military, and Gender Studies.
Ability to conduct program assessment, communication center administration, and basic course coordination.
Ability to teach at the university level.
Ability to mentor undergraduate and graduate students.
Typical Experience:
Experience teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in the following areas: Public Relations, Science Communication, Pedagogy & Higher Education Instruction, Communication & the Military, and Gender Studies.
Experience with program assessment, communication center administration, and basic course coordination
Experience teaching introductory and advanced courses in the Communication field, both at the graduate and undergraduate levels.
Teaching/instructional design across modalities, including synchronous online and asynchronous online delivery, hybrid delivery, and in-person delivery.
Administration of student resource centers, focusing on communication centers.
Experience recruiting, mentoring, and professional development in a graduate program.
Experience publishing in academic/scholarly literature, presenting at regional, national, and international conferences, and collaborating with local, state, and federal agencies.
Basic course oversight to include training of teaching assistants and adjunct faculty.
Assessment of student learning outcomes at the course and program level.
Experience working with diverse groups.
Required Education or Training:
PhD in Communication with an emphasis in Public Relations at time of appointment.
Salary Information:
This is a full-time, 9-month, faculty position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package.
