We are looking for freelance reporters across multiple desks, including news, entertainment, lifestyle, science & tech, live blogging, SEO, and Part of News Corp, The Sun is a global publisher and one of the biggest news brands in the UK. Our talented and diverse team publishes the best coverage of news, sport, TV, showbiz, and lifestyle.

We are looking for freelance reporters across multiple desks, including news, entertainment, lifestyle, science & tech, live blogging, SEO, and consumer.

Recent graduates with some digital newsroom are welcome, as well as more seasoned professionals.

This is an incredible opportunity to help shape our future development from the ground up, with plenty of potential for a staff contract for outstanding freelancers.

Shift rates start at $200.

Weekday shifts run from 8am-5pm, 9am-6pm, and 5pm-1am.

Weekend shifts run from 8am to 5pm, 9am to 6pm, 1pm-10pm and 4pm to 12am.

Key accountabilities:
• You will turn around copy quickly and accurately, mindful of legal issues.
• You will write in a concise and entertaining way.
• You will identify trending and newsworthy stories and subjects that will drive traffic.
• You will work with the video desk and picture desk.
• You will interview people as required.

Skills and experience:
• Experience in a similar position, or a position with directly transferable skills.
• Experience using WordPress or similar as well as a picture management system.
• Experience working on breaking news stories.
• Strong understanding of social media.
• Strong knowledge of analytics and how to use data to select stories to maximize daily traffic.

This fast-paced role is based in New York and will require some evening and weekend work as you lead the quick and clickable distribution of the site’s digital content.

The job reports to The Sun’s Head of Photo.

This position is based in the New York office or remote. The ideal candidate is a creative thinker, and collaborative team member, who thrives in a fast-paced digital news environment; is organized, has Photoshop experience, and is able to juggle multiple projects.

The ideal candidate has excellent visual storytelling instincts, research and communication skills, and contacts in the industry.

The job:

● You will be an outstanding photo researcher.

● You will work with news reporters and researchers to tell stories through imagery, using specialist research skills in a timely manner.

● You will have experience of working in a fast-paced, breaking news environment at a local or national level and delivering to tight deadlines.

● You will have an understanding of tabloid-style online news media.

Skills and experience:

● Flexibility regarding shifts. Must be able to work evenings and weekends

● Experience using a picture management system

● Experience with comprehensive research on news events

● Understanding of usage rights and experience in negotiating image fees

● Knowledge of general news, as well as entertainment news

● Knowledge of Photoshop

We are now looking for a Senior SEO editor to become the number three on the desk behind the head and deputy in a large team that is one of the cornerstones of the operation.

The role of the SEO team is to grow our on and off-platform audience and increase engagement and loyalty.

This position is based in New York and offers a supportive staff culture in a team that is continuously expanding.

The ideal candidate is a dynamic SEO editor with at least a year’s experience in a similar role and who thrives in a fast-paced digital news environment.

You will be responsible for taking on leadership tasks within the team, including mentoring junior SEO editors and SEO writers.

The vacancy reports to the Head and Deputy Head of SEO.

In the role you will:
• Play a key role in the ongoing development and execution of The Sun's SEO and audience strategy.
• Make recommendations to journalists and section heads through the day about trending search terms and relevant keywords.
• Pre-plan for future articles and events by building out topics and doing keyword research for upcoming exclusives or events.
• Monitor daily output and ensure relevant cross-linking in articles, ensure articles and pages are correctly tagged, forward link top traffic-driving pages to other more recent articles to encourage circulation.

Key Skills and Experience:
• A proven ability to optimize stories to achieve maximum exposure in search engines
• Competent in tools including Google Trends, Google Search Console and any real-time analytics tools such as Chartbeat or Parse.ly
• Good news judgment and knowledge of The Sun brand and audience
• Open to working a shift pattern (one weekend and a few evenings a month) to ensure 24/7 coverage is provided
