Guardian US is seeking a versatile, creative, and experienced senior editor to work on its special series team.

These high impact projects, frequently on social or environmental justice themes, run for a year or more and often include a rich mix of formats including news, features, investigations, visual stories and interactives.

The current special projects include America’s Dirty Divide, Our Unequal Earth, The Fight for Democracy and an upcoming project on inequality in housing. The senior editor will help lead coverage on housing, the climate crisis and environmental justice.

The initial scope of the role is for a year, and although we cannot guarantee an extension we hope to secure funding to be able to do so.

About You

This editor will have a passion for making serious issues come alive, and will be involved in the entire story process, from assigning to editing, packaging and visuals presentation. They will have excellent project management skills, and will set overall series goals as well as respond to news developments. They should be a deft editor and headline writer, and have an interest in story forms beyond standard text. Investigative experience is a significant plus. Often the projects will require the editor to cultivate and manage a network of freelance contributors.

• Strong news judgement and high standards for fair and accurate reporting
• Track record of collaboration
• Minimum 5-10 years experience working in an editorial capacity in a newsroom
• Strong background in editing
• Ability to work on tight deadlines

Purpose of role

Guardian US is looking for a reporter to cover the fossil fuel industry’s influence on US politics, climate policy and social attitudes, and the climate lawsuits brought by a number of US cities and states against the industry.

A particular focus will be the network of law firms, banks and PR firms that enable the industry to continue operating by frustrating attempts at regulatory or legal moves, cultivating positive and often misleading narratives or continuing to fund their extractive investments.

Other story areas could include industry donations to politicians; lobbying and public relations campaigns by the industry; and the impact of the major recent climate legislation on the industry and on public lands where further drilling could take place.

The ideal candidate will be a self-starter who will come with a sheaf of ideas they’d like to pursue. They would also have an interest in, and some experience of, investigative and data reporting, as the goal of this series is to break news as well as report it. And they understand the Guardian's lens on this crucial topic. This role will be part of our special project on fossil fuels and climate, and follows on from our first year of coverage.

The Guardian US seeks an experienced newsroom leader, manager and team builder to support our journalism through strategic planning and investment in the editorial department and its people. Working closely with the US editor, the managing editor will ensure the smooth running of news operations across a wide range of functions, from staffing and budget planning to standards, staff well-being and newsroom resources. This position will oversee the US editorial budget, liaising with finance leads in the US and the UK, as well as section editors across the editorial department, to ensure our teams have the tools and resources they need to thrive as they produce distinctive, high-quality journalism that advances the Guardian’s editorial mission.

The managing editor is a key voice in maintaining and developing an inclusive newsroom culture through relationship building, staff recruitment, development and training, working to adjust our approach and policies as we continue to grow and diversify our team and respond to developments such as hybrid office-remote working. This key part of the role involves ongoing scrutiny of all our processes to ensure we are doing all we can to meet our goals to become a more equitable and diverse news organization.

The role involves maintaining close working relationships with senior figures in the Guardian’s global managing editor’s office in London and a close working relationship with senior colleagues in the finance and business teams at Guardian US to ensure that the editorial and commercial strategy - and budget - is aligned.

This is a key role at the very heart of day-to-day operations at Guardian US and is critical to the delivery of longer-term strategy across our three offices in NY, DC and LA.

Key responsibilities & accountabilities
• Day to day management of the Guardian US editorial budget, including setting and tracking the budget in collaboration with finance teams in the US and the UK (as well as the US Editor and the US Managing Director)
• Partnering with the Director of Human Resources, act as the organization’s co-representative to the US union, working to collaborate and bargain collectively with the union
• Manage and support the editorial assistants responsible for assigning rotas, meeting scheduling, vendor and freelance payments, budget tracking, time off and travel
• Partner with the Director of Human Resources on the recruitment, development and performance management of US staff, in addition to the investigation and resolution of employee issues; ensure that the Guardian fosters a positive workplace culture that fosters commitment to the organization’s mission and embodies our values; and play a key role in driving diversity and representation.
• Oversee Guardian US presence at journalism job fairs and conferences, including representing the organization at events
• Be a key editorial liaison with the Guardian commercial and philanthropic teams, overseeing staffing, budgets and spending, facilitating smooth communication between teams and ensuring that Guardian values and voice are upheld at all times. Support the launch of major new editorial projects, supported by external funding. Recent projects include Green Light, the Uplift and New Face of Small Business
• Work with the wider editorial leadership team to identify investment and strategic opportunities and needs for Guardian US, and contribute to development and roll out of these plans
