As a Senior Publisher you would be responsible for vibrant list of journals within the Biomedicine group, working as part of the team to grow the portfolio through strategic journal development and acquisitions. To develop the portfolio, you’ll enjoy being proactive, creative and data-driven to devise and implement journal development plans. As the primary publishing contact for your journals, you’ll work alongside leading academics and with colleagues from across the business, meaning excellent communication skills and the ability to build strong relationships are key to ensure the smooth running and success of the journal portfolio. In this role, you’ll gain exposure to all aspects of the academic journal publishing industry.

Responsibilities:
• Develop and maintain excellent working relationships with Editors-in-Chief, Society contacts, Editorial Board members and other stakeholders, acting as their key point of contact for publishing matters. This includes organizing and hosting Editorial Board meetings.
• Resolving queries and corresponding with Editors by email, phone and in person, ensuring that communications are responded to within a timely fashion and escalated when required.
• Build excellent relationships and team working within the immediate team and other departments.
• Prioritize journals for development or maintenance in line with company strategy
• Develop knowledge of the fields the portfolio operates within (e.g. to identify important journals/features/hot topics etc.) and use knowledge to actively identify journal development opportunities.
• Work alongside Editors and Editorial Board members to increase journal visibility, submissions and reputation within the field.
• Increase the portfolio’s share of citations compared to the competition, through article inflow, commissioning and appropriate marketing
• Ensure appropriate representation in indexing services and work to ensure journals are performing at level for acceptance by selective services.
• Ensure that journals receive appropriate promotion (e.g. blogs, press releases, social media etc) as per targets set.
• Ensure that authors and reviewers who contact a journal receive appropriate support from the Publisher, ensuring that communications are responded to within a timely fashion (2 working days) and upscale when required.
• Monitor data on peer review service to optimize manuscript flow. Pre-empt issues and work with the Editorial Office as well as internal and external Editors to resolve and delays.
• Be familiar with COPE Guidelines to be able to advise on ethical queries, and ensure all journals comply with these.
• Ensure correct filing of documents and correct data entry into relevant systems and databases to enable monitoring of renewal dates, correct honoraria payments, and that all journal information (e.g. on website and marketing material) is kept up to date.
• Work with members of the Medicine & Biomedicine team to acquire new journals in this area
• Represent the company at scientific conferences when required.

Experience, skills and qualifications:
• Educated to bachelor’s degree level, preferably with a scientific background

The Head of Content Acquisition (Journals) is responsible for leading a team (3 to 4 people) to acquire high-value content, in close collaboration with the applicable Journals teams. The team will build global subject-based collections within specific disciplines, particularly in our Springer Journals portfolio, and grow submissions and published articles via targeted outreach to help deliver sustainable content growth in alignment with journal development priorities. Potential Locations could be Berlin, Heidelberg, New York or Jersey City.

The responsibilities include:

1. Lead a Commissioning and Project Management team
• Recruit highly qualified and motivated people into Commissioning Editor and Managing Editor roles
• Ensure that the team is onboarded and trained to a high standard
• Energize team members to meet clear objectives and expectations for delivery
• Instill a performance-focused culture that supports reliable delivery of targets
• Report on progress towards targets and goals

• Control the performance of the end-to-end collections process itself to effect continuous improvements and identify where innovation is needed or would be impactful
• Test and implement newly defined strategies and improvement initiatives

3. Recruit and manage Guest Editors
• Recruit and train Guest Editors to ensure appropriate content handling
• Develop strong relationships with Guest Editors
• Drive engagement and high level of satisfaction within the Guest Editors community in close collaboration with the Editor Engagement and Marketing teams

4. Support the development of tools needed to reliably deliver Collections content at scale
• Work with the Analytics Centre of Excellence to optimize the performance and usage of machine learning technology aimed at identifying and inviting the best potential authors on your journal portfolio
• Work with the Analytics Centre of Excellence to optimize the expansion of automatic collection topic identification
• Work with the Submission and Peer Review system team to optimize the management and delivery of collections content
• Work with Product & Platform Group to optimize delivery of Collections content on our platforms

5. Work with key internal stakeholders to ensure the goals of the Content Acquisition team are achieved and the needs of our research communities are met
• Build close working relationships with Publishing teams to ensure all requirements and perspectives are shared
• Build close working relationships with other internal divisions as needed e.g. Product & Platform group, Technology, Production, Customer Service, etc.

Business Area and Mission

The goal of the Publishing Performance and Intelligence Group (PP&I) is to help deliver next generation digital publishing at Springer Nature and as a result, grow the number of published articles, especially in open access (OA). In a close collaboration with the Journals Group, Production, IT, Marketing and Customer Service we will be supporting and enhancing the end-to-end publishing process to increase the number of transfers of articles between journals, commission new collections and strengthen editor engagement.

The Centre of Excellence (CoE) team aims to create and drive continuous improvement with PP&I teams and their respective stakeholders. We align, agree, plan and drive the implementation of new/improved workflows, processes, systems, and tools within the end-to-end publishing process.

One of the core teams that will be supported is the Content Acquisition (CA) Team. This team drives the published article growth via collection building across the SN Journal portfolio.

Purpose of the Role

This role will, as part of the CoE team, be responsible for delivery of dedicated support to the Content Acquisition team within the PP&I Group and support delivery of best in class publishing processes through continuous improvement, analysis, training, and project support.

The team will consist of a Content Acquisition process manager and a CA success manager, 5 publishing process optimisation managers and will act as the point of contact to a team of 5 Journal Support Advisors based in India.

In this role you will work closely with key stakeholders and make sure that all parties are aligned and projects will be delivered within the agreed timelines. Besides that this team will contribute to the commercial success of the Content Acquisition team.

Responsibilities
• Leading and managing a team as mentioned above to guide and support them in achieving their goals
