This Slate is looking for an analytics engineer to join our research and data team. We are looking for a candidate with the right mix of data analysis, data engineering, and visualization skills to help us build analytics products and infrastructure to drive Slate forward and further democratize data within the organization. This role can be based in either our Brooklyn or D.C. office. We will also consider permanently remote candidates based in the U.S.

Key Responsibilities

● Automate processes in our data pipeline, maintain and enhance existing scripts in our ETL jobs, and find ways to improve our data infrastructure in the future

● Collaborate with our director of research and data analytics designer on ad hoc reports, longitudinal studies, and data models

● Analyze trends in membership (acquisition, retention, and churn), ad performance, and factors that get people to read more Slate

● Build out revenue projections across Slate’s direct, programmatic display and podcast business

● Design, build, and maintain data products that regularly present KPIs to senior leadership

● Encourage democratization of data by making reports and metrics approachable for various Slate teams

Required Qualifications

● At least three years of experience in a quantitative role

● Fluency in Python and experience sourcing data from APIs

● Intermediate or better proficiency in the following:

○ Database systems and proficiency in SQL

○ Cloud computing services such as Amazon Web Services and/or Google Cloud Platform

○ Command line tools and testing in a local environment

● Demonstrated experience combining, standardizing, and telling a story from large and complex data sets

Preferred Qualifications

● Expertise in workflow management and automation

● Expertise in developing dashboards with data visualization tools such as Looker or Tableau

● Experience analyzing metrics used in ad operations and ad-serving technologies

Bonus Points

● Experience performing A/B tests and analyzing the results

● Experience at another publisher or media company

● Prior experience with data governance: personal data privacy, data retention, and security best practices
