Description of Job

The Department of Media & Entertainment program invites applications for a nine-month tenure-track faculty position in television, video, and film production to commence in August 2023.

We are seeking a new colleague to join us in expanding and further developing our revamped curriculum for our Bachelor of Science program in Media & Entertainment, with concentrations in Multimedia Journalism & Storytelling, Sports & eSports Media, Strategic Communication, Media & Entertainment Production, and Media, Entertainment, & Arts Management. An ideal candidate will be excited to enhance and expand our media and entertainment programing and collaborate with SoCaP faculty in an integrated creative environment.

Job Description

The faculty member will teach topics that may include but are not limited to: video/film production, broadcast and streaming operations, sports and e-sports production, editing and post-production, lighting, broadcast and motion graphics, script/screenwriting, studio operations/management, video/film business, student media practicum, and media/entertainment foundations within SoCaP. The faculty member will act as faculty advisor to one of our student media outlets; contribute to student success through advising, supporting, and mentoring undergraduate majors and students; collaborate with SoCaP development teams to further implement innovative academic programs and promote university service and community engagement. Applicants must be committed to all aspects of diversity in learning, discovery, and engagement and to contributing to the success of SoCaP programing through frequent positive collaboration with faculty colleagues, service to industry and/or profession, and dissemination of scholarly works.

Primary Duties

Teaching / Librarianship:

Serve the Media & Entertainment department through excellence in teaching, curricular development and revision, and program assessment. Contribute to the development of integrated studies within SoCaP.

Scholarly & Creative Activities:

Develop and maintain a record of scholarship commensurate with the level of rank, striving to achieve nationally and internationally recognized standards of excellence. These activities should include undergraduate and graduate students when possible and appropriate.

Service:

Includes but is not limited to:
• Contribute to student success through advising, support and mentoring undergraduate majors and students. Schedule office hours to meet advising responsibilities and encourage improved student performance in classes. Assist students in setting academic goals while maintaining a record of advisement; provide referrals to appropriate student services.
• Participate in department, school, college, and/or university committees. This position may consent to election or appointment to university boards or estate committees. Facilitate academic community cooperation. Attend campus meetings and university functions including commencement.
• Actively participate in community outreach and the recruitment of prospective students.
• Provide technology and facilities maintenance, requisition, and oversight relevant to area.

Salary Range

$55,000 - $70,000

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

Minimum Qualifications
• Master’s degree in media, video, film, or related field
• Published and/or exhibited works in media, entertainment, or related area
• Thorough understanding of industry standard video/film pro-duction principles and processes
• Digital portfolio demonstrating professional work in video and/or film (samples of student works preferred).
• Demonstrated experience with non-linear video editing
• Experience with producing and/or directing multi-camera productions
• Experience with broadcast/ streaming distribution technologies
• Effective teaching or instructional experience

Preferred Qualifications
• Terminal degree in media, video, film, or related field
• Demonstrated proficiency with video/film production across industries and genres
• Expertise in producing and/or directing multicamera productions
• Continuous record of scholarly activity in media.
• Strong creative sensibilities and a passion for creating engaging visual stories and works
• Demonstrated ability to relate to diverse populations and learners
• Sports production experience
• Demonstrated experience working/touring professionally in media and entertainment
• Experience across theory and production aspects of video and film
• Technical experience with studio and editing facilities
• Experience with a variety of media technologies /facilities and ability to integrate technologies into media productions

Condition of Employment
