The Intercollegiate Committee for Basic Surgical Examinations (ICBSE) works on behalf of the Surgical Royal Colleges to manage the assessment and policy frameworks of the MRCS exams. The team is based in, but is not operationally part of, the Royal College of Surgeons of England. The Head of ICBSE role is based in London.

About the role

The role has overall responsibility for the operational and strategic management of ICBSE and its associated committees, providing guidance and support to the ICBSE Chair in his/her role, responsible to... the four College Presidents and their Councils and, on behalf of the four Colleges, to the General Medical Council (GMC).

The role will oversee the development of the Intercollegiate MRCS and MRCS (ENT) examinations on behalf of, and in conjunction with, the four Royal Surgical Colleges, and provide oversight of the work of all members of the ICBSE, its sub-committees and the ICBSE office as required.

The role holder will lead a team of eight staff members, supporting the main areas of work for which the ICBSE is responsible and to work with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.

Responsibilities
• Building and maintaining constructive relationships in order to represent ICBSE in interactions with external stakeholders, such as the GMC and the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges
• Developing the strategic direction of ICBSE, in conjunction with the ICBSE Chair/Clinical Lead.
• Overseeing the review and development of assessment processes to ensure the ICBSE examinations benefit from the highest quality assessment material, delivery methods and quality assurance.

• Experience of writing and editing for a variety of media including print and the internet.
• Good working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint packages.
• Demonstrable experience of placing stories in the media.
• Rigour in researching and reviewing content: able to identify key points, summarise findings and report data and conclusions accurately.
• Excellent writing skills: able to write fluent, compelling copy free from grammatical or other errors.
• Excellent telephone manner: diplomatic and persuasive verbal communication skills.
• Able to prioritise effectively and deliver work to deadlines.
• Demonstrable understanding of journalists’ needs and priorities.
• Ability to understand policy documents and formulate a media response.
• Collaborative and inclusive approach to build relationships with colleagues across the organisation, to encourage timely information sharing with the press office.
• Diplomacy and persuasiveness, to foster the trust of senior spokespeople you are briefing and advising.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and integrity, to protect the College’s reputation for providing accurate and reliable information to the media.
• Strong prioritisation skills and a flexible approach to respond to changing priorities and needs and manage reactive queries.
• Enthusiasm and creativity to seek out interesting stories and pitch them.
