You’ll be a part of our team of reporters covering the Pacific Northwest with a focus on Washington, Oregon, Alaska and Idaho.
Our work in the region by staff and Local Reporting Network partners has revealed how indigenous people in Alaska are denied public safety services, detailed the harrowing account of the hunt for a serial rapist and botched police investigations, drawn attention to allegations of abuse and minimal instruction at special education schools in Washington, and highlighted the disproportionate risk of toxic exposure to Native tribes from fish in Oregon. And we’re excited to dig deeper into this important region.
We’re looking for a reporter who:
• Has at least five years of professional journalism experience, either at a news agency or as a freelancer.
• Has produced original, revelatory, in-depth or investigative stories. If that experience is in the Pacific Northwest, all the better, but we are open to applicants with strong bodies of work from other places. You don’t have to be an “investigative reporter,” but your work should show a dedication to digging for the truth.
• Aches to report stories that are both important and powerfully told, and has a vision for how they’d cover the Pacific Northwest. Your approach should get to the heart of the unique lived experiences of people in this region.
• Has experience with or ideas about all the possible ways we can do journalism now: from deep data digging to working with readers to marrying narrative and investigative forms.
• Wants to bring an accountability lens to the issues of the day through quick investigations reported over a couple of weeks and longer projects that you dig into for a few months (or more).
• Really likes working with others. We are a highly collaborative newsroom, both across our team and with other news organizations regionally and nationally. We believe we do our best work together.
This job is full time and includes benefits. The candidates must be based in, or willing to relocate to, one of the states in our Pacific Northwest coverage area. Applicants must be eligible to work in the U.S.

The investigation can be rooted in a place or focus on a person, but it should illuminate an issue of broader relevance.
The best proposals have a clear hypothesis... typically based on significant reporting: They don’t wonder whether something bad is happening, they know it. Please include not only a general description of the topic, but also a sense of the anecdotes/data/documents you have gathered, what you expect to find and possible accountability stories you want to tell.
In addition, applicants should detail, as much as is possible at the outset, what an investigation will require: data work, travel, obtaining public records. It’s also important for us to know what data, documents and/or source relationships the reporter already has. Finally, we’d like to hear a bit about why you are particularly suited to do this investigation.
