General Description
Perform a variety of nursing assistant duties in the direct care of patients under the direct supervision of an RN.
Provide work experience to enhance transition for the nursing student into practice as a registered nurse through professional clinical experience.
Duties and Responsibilities of this Level
• Be assigned 1:1 with and Float Pool RN clinical partner for the entire 10 week experience
• Work with the same one unit and work the same shift as assigned Float Pool RN clinical partner
• Prepare patients, equipment and supplies for specific procedures and provide manual assistance as required
• Obtain and record patient data for medical records noting and informing RN of information collected
• Administer treatment and personal care procedures to patients including, but not limited to feeding, bathing, shaving, changing clothing, cleaning and trimming fingernails, bed making, assisting with ambulation, enemas, skin care, and bowel and bladder elimination; provide such additional care as required to meet the personal needs and comfort of assigned patients.
• Assist physicians and nurses with physical examinations by helping position patients, changing non sterile dressing and weighing patients.
• Take and record vital signs, record I & O, apply ice bags, administer douches and enemas.
• Note and report any changes in patient’s condition.
• Perform finger sticks for blood glucose testing, with appropriate training.
• Collect, deliver and conduct routine tests on patient specimens. Clean assigned area; stock and replenish supplies and equipment as required.
• Assist with admission, discharge, and transportation of patients. Follow standard precautions and use personal protective equipment as required.
Required Qualifications at this Level
Education
Applicants must be a rising junior or senior in an NLN/CCNE/ACNE accredited nursing program.
Experience
Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification
• Applicants must provide evidence of current listing with the North Carolina Division of Health Services Regulation/Nurse Aide I Registry.
• Applicants must provide evidence of current AHA or American Red Cross Basic Life Support Healthcare provider status that will be valid for the entire length of the PNA experience. CEPD can provide BLS at orientation if they were unable to obtain prior to coming to DUHS.
• Applicants must commit to working 36-40 hours per week for the entire 10 week program.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Working knowledge of sterile techniques and special procedures that are applicable to work performed
• Working knowledge of procedures and techniques involved in administrating routine and special treatments to patients
• Working knowledge of sanitation, personal hygiene and basic health and safety precautions applicable to work in a hospital
• Working knowledge of the organization and physical layout of the hospital
• Working knowledge of the infection control procedures and safety precautions
• Ability to withstand prolonged standing and walking
• Heavy lifting and the ability to transport stretcher and wheelchair patients to various hospital locations may be required
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
• Ability to document and communicate pertinent information using computer and or paper documentation tools
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients and hospital staff
• Working knowledge of principles and practices of providing bedside patient care

If providing hope and healing through compassionate, innovative, and individualized care interest you, we welcome your application for the position below.The Psychiatric Nursing Assistant III (PNA III) position is on Geriatrics - PM shift (2:45pm to 11:15pm).The Psychiatric Nursing Assistant III (PNA III) performs complex (journey-level) rehabilitative patient care services work under the clinical supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) to provide quality psychiatric nursing care in an inpatient setting. Work involves providing emergency, health, and personal care services to patients; observing, reporting and documenting, in an electronic record, patient conditions and behaviors; interacting with patients therapeutically; and participating in individualized and unit-based programming. The PNA III has a primary responsibility to maintain direct and on-going therapeutic interactions with patients to promote living and social skills, thus encouraging progress towards a lesser restrictive environment. As an integral member of the recovery team or admissions team, provides verbal and supportive documentation concerning individual patient behaviors, progress or lack thereof, towards individualized goals of the recovery plan. Participates in shift reports and recovery team or admissions meetings. Performs delegated nursing duties commensurate with competency. May provide guidance and oversee the assigned tasks of the PNA I and II. Works under general supervision with, moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgement. Performs other duties as assigned. Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agencyand#146;s obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location.This position may be eligible to earn additional pay for work performed on evenings.Essential Job FunctionsAttends work on a regular basis and may be asked to work a specific shift schedule or, at times, even a rotating schedule, extended shift and/or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned. Uses therapeutic communication skills in promptly and effectively engaging patients to assist them in meeting the objectives of their individual recovery plans. If working nights, maintains a quiet and restful environment to promote individualand#146;s rest and sleep. If working in admissions, facilitates the admissions process by reassuring the patient as they are evaluated and provided with the required documentation. Provides supportive, age specific care to patients as assigned by the Registered Nurse (RN) or designees(s) and assists patients with activities of daily living, hygiene, and eating to promote independence and self-care.
