As part of The Ohio State University’s Provost’s Fellow to Faculty program, the Department of Comparative Studies in the College of Arts and Sciences seeks a dynamic, innovative early-career scholar whose research and teaching engage the intersections of race, science, and technology, with strong emphasis on the categories of “Race and Health Equity,” for an Assistant Professor position. In keeping with the department’s commitment to interdisciplinarity, we are especially interested in scholars whose scholarly backgrounds intersect with both the humanities and social sciences and whose interdisciplinary focus includes a wide range of possible research areas addressed within the field of Science and Technology Studies (STS), including, but not limited to, critical race theory, public health, disability studies, data justice, and the history and philosophy of science and medicine. Area of geographic focus is open as are specific topics of research. Candidates for the position will also be expected to demonstrate active involvement in community-engaged scholarship and public outreach.

The department greatly values diversity and inclusive pedagogy. This position will play a critical role in shaping OSU’s interdisciplinary and interdepartmental program in Science and Technology Studies (STS). STS is the fastest-growing area in Comparative Studies. The successful applicant will have opportunities to teach across all levels of our curriculum, including introductory and upper-level undergraduate courses and graduate seminars, and to advise undergraduate and graduate students. They will find mentors and conversation partners among faculty both within and outside the department engaged in research on topics such as race, the body, religion, science, data, technology, health, and medicine. Depending on the nature of the candidate’s scholarship, they will have opportunities to collaborate with other programs within the College of Arts & Sciences and across the university, including the Global Arts & Humanities Discovery Theme (GAHDT), the Wexner Medical Center, the STEAM Factory, the College of Engineering, and the Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity, and in areas such as medical humanities, environmental humanities, and digital humanities. The Provost’s Tenure-Track Fellow to Faculty Program is a two-year program that assists early career scholars as they transition to the tenure track. Provost Fellows will receive research funding and participate in career development programs to support their transition to assistant professor and their long-term career success. In addition, Provost Fellows will focus time on research for up to two years allowing for an in-depth start on scholarship, with limited teaching requirements (although Fellows may teach one course per year if they choose), participate in the activities within the Department of Comparative Studies, and have a designated faculty mentor. Following the fellowship period, which is an instructor rank appointment, Provost Fellows will then transfer to the rank of assistant professor within the Department of Comparative Studies and the tenure clock will begin.

The Department of Comparative Studies is also conducting two additional tenure track searchers. One is an Assistant Professor (tenure track) in “Race, Science and Technology,” applicants applying to the Provost’s Tenure-Track Fellow to Faculty Program may also apply to and be considered for the Assistant Professor (tenure track) position in “Race, Science and Technology.” The other is an Assistant Professor (tenure track) position in “Indigenous Knowledges, Race, and Education.”

Qualifications: This appointment will begin August 15, 2023, and the successful applicant must have PhD in hand by the start of employment. The PhD may be in any relevant field of study; ABDs are welcome to apply. We seek candidates whose research and teaching clearly engage the intersections of race, science, and technology, whether in the United States or in other parts of the world. Demonstrated commitment to interdisciplinary scholarship and inclusive pedagogy are required. Appointment is contingent on the university’s verification of credentials and other information required by law and/or university policies, including but not limited to a criminal background check.

The pay range for this job profile is $18.61- $24.81. The offer for this position will fall within this range based on internal equity, unit's available budget, and the candidate's qualifications.
