Economists employed by the government are focused on the health of the U.S. economy. They collect, research, and analyze data to provide reports to policymakers on economic health, which may include unemployment levels, inflation, and wage data. The information collected by economists is used in policy decision-making; for example, an economist may suggest raising minimum wage to stimulate economic growth or to provide acceptable living wages due to recent inflation of basic goods.

Economists employed by corporations generally study economic trends as a means of aiding company decision-making. These economists observe market trends for signs of changes that could impact the profits of the companies they work for. For example, an increase in foreclosures may be an early sign of a potential recession, and an economist might observe the sign and recommend against launching expensive new programs until signs point to growth in the economy and consumer purchasing.

How To Become an Economist

While it’s possible to work in an economist position with only a bachelor’s degree in economics, accounting, or finance, most employers will expect economists to hold a graduate degree, and many higher-level positions require graduate degrees in economics. Those with only bachelor’s degrees may qualify for entry-level positions as economic analysts, or they may be able to earn experience in a related field, such as banking or finance organizations.

Economists who aspire to be promoted into high-paying positions will most certainly need to pursue a master’s degree in economics, and may also need to earn a Ph.D. in economics. Aspiring economics professors will most certainly need to have earned a Ph.D. to qualify for tenured positions at colleges and universities. Applicants may be able to teach introductory economics courses as adjunct instructors with only a master’s degree if demand for courses is higher than tenured instructors can support.

Overview:

The Department of Recreation, Sport and
Tourism (RST) seeks a full-time 12-month Director of M.S. Online Programs / Teaching
Professor (Open Rank). The successful candidate will develop a short and long
term strategic plan for innovative graduate degree and certificate programs,
lead the recruitment efforts, advise graduate students, and teach courses
across the curriculum via distance modality. This position builds on RST’s
interdisciplinary strengths in community and organizational development, health
and wellbeing, diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility, and
sustainability. The start date for this
position will be January 2024 (negotiable).

Responsibilities:

Responsibilities including overseeing and
delivering an online education experience, program assessment to improve
effectiveness and efficiency, partnering with college and campus technological
services, designing new courses, enhancing existing courses, and advising
students. Also included are the
administration of the department’s current online MS program to reflect
separate specialties and certificates; identify trends to anticipate needs,
leverage faculty expertise related to curricular development; and monitor and
report on performance indicators. Developing and implementing a recruitment plan, including organizing
recruitment events. Managing processes for admissions and student progress in
collaboration with departmental Graduate Committee.

Qualifications: Applicants must demonstrate the following
minimum qualifications:
• Earned
doctoral degree in recreation, sport, tourism, or related field.
Applicants with ABD status will be considered, with appointment contingent
upon degree completion prior to the position’s start date.
• Demonstrated
experience teaching effectively at the college or university-level, and a
commitment to continual improvement in teaching activities.
A track
record of leading curricular development or other service-level
obligations that produced quality instruction with a commitment to
enhancing student support services.
• Evidence
of strategic decision making in relation to increasing engagement,
interpreting policy, and establishing methods and procedures to increase
retention and satisfaction.
• A strong
commitment and demonstrated ability to collaborate and work effectively
with multiple stakeholders of diverse backgrounds to achieve strategic
goals.
Knowledge
of principles and practices of administration and leadership, and ability
to lead, implement, and manage change while remaining agile in an evolving
higher-ed landscape.
• Aptitude
to engage in ongoing scholarly activity.
• Evidence
of commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

The Department:

Faculty and staff of the
Department of Recreation, Sport and Tourism (RST) at the University of Illinois
Urbana-Champaign work to advance knowledge to foster healthy lifestyles,
environmental stewardship and sustainability, effective management and
marketing of organizations, and social and economic development of communities
(see www.rst.illinois.edu for additional information). The
department offers residential B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. programs, an online
M.S. program, and houses the Office of Park and Recreation Resources.

The College:

The RST Department is part of the
College of Applied Health Sciences (see http://ahs.illinois.edu)
and affiliated with the Center for Health, Aging, and Disability (see http://chad.illinois.edu).
The College houses the Division of Disability Resources and Educational
Services (http://www.disability.illinois.edu)
(DRES) which includes the US Paralympic Training Site for Wheelchair Track Racing.
The College also houses the Chez Veterans Center (https://ahs.illinois.edu/chez-veterans-center)
which opened in 2015 to provide support services to empower student veterans
with disabilities.

The Community:

Urbana-Champaign (located 135
miles south of Chicago) combines natural Midwestern beauty with the cultural
resources typically found in larger metropolitan areas. Three downtown areas (Urbana, Champaign, and
Campus town) provide vibrant public spaces with unique dining and entertainment
options and the local community offers a thriving arts and culture atmosphere
as well as varsity and community sports. Urbana-Champaign was rated #1 by
Midwest Living magazine for the greatest food for a city with less than 750,000
population.
Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy 80 parks within the two communities with easy
access to several large forest preserves and the Kickapoo Rail Trails in

This is a 100% full-time Academic position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after January 16, 2024 (negotiable). Salary is commensurate with experience.
