About our Team
As liaison office to the United States and Canada, the main goal of our 5-person office is to strengthen the effectiveness and impact of the OECD's work regionally by facilitating a better understanding of the OECD's work, promoting the use of its key deliverables by policy makers, and increasing support for the Organization's mission and values. Our Interns play a pivotal role in our daily efforts to increase the impact of our campaigns across the OECD's key priorities.

What you'll do
Our Internship Program is designed to bring highly motivated students with diverse backgrounds into the Organization and provide a valuable and practical learning experience that integrates students' knowledge gained in the classroom with professionals skills developed in a real-world public affairs and communications environment, under the supervision and guidance of experienced professionals.

Interns typically:
• Curate and draft content on a daily basis for email newsletters, press releases, social media, as well as other digital communications products designed to inform and engage our target audiences. This may include creating eye-catching graphics, videos, or data visualizations.
• Gather and synthesize top news stories in U.S. and Canada for the OECD's global news update distributed to senior OECD leadership and member country embassies.
• Help organize public events (virtual and in-person), including helping to define topics, sourcing speakers, drafting and sending invitations, producing social media content, etc.
• Participate in-and report on-meetings, public presentations and Congressional hearings related to OECD priorities. Prepare impact analyses on activities; draft memos, briefing packages and biographies ahead of OECD meetings, as necessary.
• Receive and draft responses to external queries from government, media, civil society, and the public seeking data or information on OECD's work. Conduct desk research on specific policy areas, as necessary.
• Help develop country and language-specific communication strategies (including social media plans) for key report launches, projects, and official visits of the Secretary-General.
• In addition, Interns can expect to be involved in special projects with Washington and Paris-based colleagues. Recent trainees have assisted with the visits of the OECD Secretary-General and other senior OECD officials.

Internship Duration

The Statistics and Data Directorate (SDD) (www.oecd.org/sdd) provides statistics and data on a comparable basis and from a variety of sources to analysts, policy makers, and members of civil society. SDD also develops new metrics and innovative digital tools to address emerging policy issues, leads the development of international statistical standards, contributes to improve statistical methods, and coordinates statistical and data-related activities within the Organisation and with other international agencies. Within SDD, the Division for Trade and Productivity Statistics (TPS) oversees the development and dissemination of productivity, prices, business and trade statistics.

TPS is looking for a highly experienced Statistician to lead the team on Short-Term indicators in the division and to participate in projects using alternative data and methods. The successful candidate will have advanced, excellent programming skills, good knowledge of short-term indicators and of statistical and econometric techniques, and proven ability to communicate complex results, including good drafting skills. S/he will be able to work independently but will also be comfortable collaborating with other team members.

The successful candidate will report to the Head of the Real-time Data Analytics Unit and to the Head of Division.

Main Responsibilities

Statistical work and economic research

Manage the team responsible for the update and maintenance of the MEI databases and other databases on short-term indicators.

Manage the bi-monthly update of the OECD Dashboard of Short-Term Indicators, and suggest ways to improve the tool. Draft documents associated with the Dashboard (monthly insights, blogs, methodological note).

Contribute to the conferences and workshops co-organised by the unit (e.g. workshop on time series methods)

Contribute to the projects of the Division using of alternative data sources or new techniques. This will include working on nowcasting exercises, using both machine-learning and advanced econometrics models, but also potentially on projects using geospatial analysis and/or natural language processing.

Contribute to working papers related to measurement issues.

Communication, liaison and other tasks

Liaise and respond to requests from users related to the Dashboard and/or short-term indicators collected in the unit.

Develop good working relationships with colleagues across the OECD, with statisticians in national statistical offices, national administrations and other international organisations, and with academics in the wider research community working on related topics.

Participate in expert meetings and workshops related to techniques to monitor short-term developments and nowcast, machine learning or other advanced techniques. Present research in those meetings.

Provide overall support to the Head of the Unit and undertake other tasks as required.

Ideal Candidate Profile

Academic Background

An advanced university degree in statistics, economics, mathematics, data science, computer science, or a closely related field.

Professional Background

A minimum of 10 years of relevant experience in the production and use of short-term economic statistics.

Excellent knowledge of large statistical databases and practical experience with statistical software to manage them.

Deep knowledge of statistical techniques, including but not limited to seasonal adjustment.

Good drafting skills.

Experience or coursework in some of these fields would be a strong asset: time series analysis, natural language processing, geospatial analysis, causal inference, optimisation, image analysis, computer vision and object detection, web scraping.

Very good knowledge of data visualisation tools and ability to communicate complex results.

Experience in leading teams and the delivery of team-based projects.

Tools

Main Responsibilities
