About the Department

The Community Impact department encompasses our Youth and Community Program Teams, Community Engagement, and Development & Philanthropy.

NYRR is one of the largest non-profit providers of youth and community fitness programming in New York City (with a growing national/international footprint). Our Youth Program team develops, administers, and supports an evolving portfolio of youth running programs and resources used by schools, community centers, and families throughout New York City and nationwide. Our flagship youth program, Rising New York Road Runners, brings the benefits of physical activity to various sites, predominantly in lower-income communities, to help children develop the ability, confidence, and desire to be physically active for life.

Our Community Program team develops, administers, and supports a wide portfolio of programs including our renowned Striders walking/fitness program for older adults, our Open Run platform that provides free running and walking racing and community-building opportunities in parks across the city, and bespoke programs such as Run for the Future and Youth Ambassadors that provide deep engagement with targeted groups.

Our Community Engagement function helps coordinate our community outreach efforts to better understand our various stakeholders, including the needs of our local and global running communities. The team manages relationships with local running clubs/crews, like-minded nonprofits, neighborhood coalitions, local businesses and chambers of commerce, government entities (city, state, national), industry partners, etc.

The Development & Philanthropy function is responsible for securing financial support from individuals, foundations, and corporations. It also oversees Team for Kids (an event-based peer-to-peer fundraising platform that recruits participants to fundraise in NYRR and other events), and NYRR’s membership program, which is designed to enhance runner's engagement with the running community and their experience at NYRR events. Overall, Development & Philanthropy is responsible for expanding and diversifying the organization’s funder base, furthering the potential for future fundraising efforts, and retaining of the growing base of donors who share NYRR’s passion and commitment of helping and inspiring all people through running.

About the Position

NYRR Striders is a fitness and walking program for older adults. Coaches lead weekly walking and fitness sessions that incorporate several types of activities for all levels of older adults, in both indoor and outdoor settings. Most sessions are conducted in local parks and senior neighborhood centers throughout all five boroughs of New York City. NYRR Striders holds weekly sessions, with most program hours occurring between Monday-Friday mornings and afternoons. However, occasional weekends are required to support organized NYRR or partner events for Striders’ participants.

Coaches support all efforts to foster a safe and inclusive environment and create a culture that allows for formidable team cohesion. In addition to providing instruction and leading activities, the coach will also perform administrative duties, such as attendance, attending regular training and team meetings. Coaches will also communicate regularly with internal program staff, participants and site leads about program sessions and upcoming events.

Job Responsibilities:
• Lead a group fitness and/or walking session for an older adult population, including people from diverse backgrounds, and all physical activity levels (primarily novice level walkers/runners).
• Prepare and implement Striders’ Walking and Beyond curriculum, as directed, utilizing the support from coaches as required for activities.
• Ensure all participants are supported throughout each session and finish the session safely.
• Arrive to various locations promptly and as assigned.
• Complete daily attendance, participant enrollment, and other administrative tasks required for program implementation.
• Attend staff meetings, required program curriculum trainings and program events.
• Respond to participant questions and provide feedback, as appropriate, during and after workouts.
• Maintain regular communication with Specialist and Director of Striders Program about site and participant needs, and program logistics.
• Must commit to total time per session of 90 minutes. Workout’s average 60 minutes in length, and coaches are expected to arrive 15 minutes ahead of time and are encouraged to stay and answer questions for up to 15 minutes after each workout concludes.

Job Requirements:

Experience:
• 5+ years in fitness instruction or coaching older adult and/or non-traditional populations.
• 1+ year of prior coaching experience in any sport and/or experience with training runners/walkers
• Knowledge of best practices in older adult fitness and an understanding of age-related needs.
• Experience teaching group exercise, dance, or older adult fitness specialties is beneficial
• Experience with physical therapy, yoga, or geriatric care desirable.
• Experience working with older adults in virtual/remote learning setting helpful.
• Fluency in another language is a plus, particularly Spanish, or Chinese

Education
• Senior Fitness, Group Fitness, and/or Running Coach certified from a nationally recognized program (ACE, NASM, AFFA, APFA, ISSA, USATF, RRCA) preferred.
• First Aid and CPR/AED certification (or willingness to obtain certification through NYRR sponsored training)
• Bachelor’s Degree or college experience preferred.
• Safesport and NYS Mandated Reporter training (or willingness to obtain certification)
• Knowledge of Physical Literacy (or willingness to attend online or in-person workshops through NYRR sponsored training).
• Knowledge of COVID-19 Prevention procedures (or willingness to implement and enforce safety protocols as required by centers)

About the Position

The Rising New York Road Runners Youth Wheelchair Training Program is a free program for youth with physical disabilities ages 6 to 21. The program offers weekly training sessions on a seasonal basis, in-school resources, and competitive events on the road and track, regardless of experience or prior NYRR affiliation. The Wheelchair Training Coach is responsible for planning and executing practices under the guidance of the other coaches and Adaptive Programming Specialist.

Job Responsibilities:
• Executes age-appropriate practice plans set by the Lead Coach(es), Adaptive Programming Specialist, and/or Director of Youth Program Development for a team of youth wheelchair athletes (ages 6 – 21)
• Support a team of youth wheelchair athletes (ages 6 – 21) through weekly practice sessions and during NYRR youth events
• Have a functional knowledge of the sport of wheelchair racing, and/or demonstrate a willingness to learn and take directions from lead coaching staff
• Support with routine cleaning and maintenance of racing wheelchairs, perform repairs as necessary, and/or demonstrate a willingness to learn how to clean and maintain wheelchair racing equipment
• Meet weekly with Lead Coach(es), Adaptive Programming Specialist, and Director of Youth Program Development regarding the execution of the program and logistics
• Proactively answer wheelchair racing related questions from athletes and their families, and provide feedback to athletes, as appropriate, during practice sessions

Job Requirements:

Experience:
• Prior work experience as a coach; prior experience as a wheelchair racing coach is a plus

About the Department

Runner Products supports the training, racing and community experience of our runners -through classes, seminars and customized training programs. The team also provides experiences to enhance the runner's engagement with the running community and their experience at NYRR events, whether it is through our membership program, race photography or ticketed events. The Runner Services team is the information source for our runner, serving for a conduit of information and an advocate for NYRR's runner-first philosophy. NYRR’s Charity Programs include Champion’s Circle and over 350 charities who partner with NYRR to raise over $30 million cumulatively through volunteers running the marathon each fall.

About the Position

NYRR’s Training Team is seeking supportive, experienced leaders to coach NYRR’s Group Training program. Group Training sessions are held year-round on weekdays and weekends. Group Training part-time coaches will work with each park lead to execute pre-planned workouts in a group setting with up to 25 runners at a time, creating an engaging and safe workout session for the runners, along with fostering an environment of inclusivity.

Job Responsibilities (primary and secondary duties):
• Work with the Training Team Lead and/or Park Lead to execute engaging workouts, that will provide the participants with a workout that builds aerobic capacity and motivates them throughout the session.

About the Department

Our Event Development and Production (ED&P) department develops and produces NYRR events from concept all the way through execution in a way that fulfills NYRR’s mission. NYRR produces 56 races per year, in addition to the TCS New York City Marathon, and additional events within each race. The events team is responsible for physical site management, volunteer management, hospitality and special events, safety& security, and managing our Warehouse and all race collateral.

About the Position

This position will work in direct support of the warehouse operations at NYRR events, and occasionally as needed within the warehouse operations.

About the Department

The Youth & Community Runner Engagement team oversees a variety of programs that offer the running community opportunities to actively support NYRR's mission to help and inspire people through running. One of the programs is NYRR's Team for Kids charity team that has more than 7,000 annual members who raise money for free running programs serving more than 267,000 kids in New York City and across the country. Team for Kids part-time coaches will work with the Team for Kids Head Coach to execute pre-planned workouts in a group setting, creating an engaging and safe workout session for the runners, along with fostering an environment of inclusivity and supporting the mission of NYRR and Team for Kids.

About the Position

The Team for Kids Coach is a part-time seasonal role serving as an important part of our training team for Team for Kids runners, providing coaching and encouragement to help everyone get across the finish line! This role will be contracted from June through November with most hours falling on Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings and practices will take place in Central Park, occasionally West Side Highway, and other local routes. Coaches are expected to lead running groups on runs, upwards of 3 hours.

Job Responsibilities (primary and secondary duties):
• Support team training sessions, working with the Team for Kids Head Coach to deliver the workout
• Begin each training/practice session with appropriate warm-up exercises, stretching, drills, and announcements
• Ensure all participants are supported throughout each training/practice session and finish the course/workout safely
• Proactively answer runner questions, providing support for their overall marathon training journey
• Encourage and support runners to successfully complete the workout

Experience:
• Prior coaching and training/running experience strongly preferred
• Experience coaching and working with runners of various levels

About the Department

Our Event Development and Production department develops and produces NYRR events from concept all the way through execution in a way that fulfills NYRR’s mission. NYRR produces 56 races per year, in addition to the TCS New York City Marathon, and additional events within each race. The events team is responsible for physical site management, volunteer management, hospitality and special events, safety & security, and managing our Warehouse and all race collateral.

About the Position

This position will report to the Director of Event Staffing & Training, and at events will report to the Event Manager and/or the Area Lead(s). This position is responsible for providing on-site operational support and volunteer management for NYRR weekly events including the TCS New York City Marathon, United Airlines New York City Half, and Popular Brooklyn Half. NYRR races are held most weekends throughout the year.

Available Roles
• Start/Finish – Start/Finish Associates help set up and break down each event by moving heavy equipment, setting up stages and tents, and putting up signage related to the Start/Finish area.
• Signage – Signage Teammates set up signage within central locations along the course to direct patrons to medical tents, fluid stations, and more.
• Festival – Festival Associates assist with the set up & break down of sponsored events.

Key responsibilities include:
• Assist NYRR Event Managers and staff with the build-out of the event start, finish, course, and festival areas at weekly and marquee races.

Requirements
• This is a weekend position with long hours (typically from 4am – 1pm; may vary based on event and/or position). Races are scheduled for most weekends throughout the year; must have consistent availability for this role.
