There is an exciting opportunity for a Research Themes and Partnerships Manager to join the Science team at NHM and provide critical support to help develop and embed the Research Themes and Partnership with University of Reading within the organisation. The role will be pivotal in supporting the Science teams in delivering the transformational change envisaged in the Research Themes and partnership; and driving forward this agenda as we work towards opening the new centre at Thames Valley Science Park in 2026/27.
About you
We are looking for a creative, motivated, and scientifically capable person, who understands the importance of NHM’s Scientific activities and the potential for its growth and development. You will act as the main point-of-contact for the themes and partnership, and work closely with the senior science leadership team. Your practical ‘can-do’ attitude will be required to identify opportunities and develop them. You will also be working with a vast array of very different types of stakeholders within NHM, at University of Reading and in a range of other external organisations. You will need to be able to build strong working relationships with these stakeholders. You will be an excellent communicator who is able to articulate opportunities and persuade people to engage. You don’t need to have done this exact role or covered the exact subject matter before – you will be supported by colleagues across Science Group to team-up.

About the role
Our collections are widely considered as one of the most globally important natural history resources because of their taxonomic, geographical, and historical breadth. The Museum’s Digital Collections Programme and related initiatives are adding new specimen records to unlock this treasure trove of information at scale for global scientific, entrepreneurial, academic and public audiences.
The Museum needs a Collections Management Solution (CMS) that can be used on multiple devices, within collections or remotely, to manage this complexity and support the necessary integrations.
The Museum’s CMS is therefore core to the Museum’s mission, and the CMS programme (RECODE) aims to secure the strategic future of the collection by:
• Implementing a new CMS, based on institutional needs and a shared approach, with a supplier who can meet our strategic requirements
• Working with internal and external stakeholders to outline solution requirements.
• Liaising with key peer institutions to understand and influence shared data models, data standards and the community’s approach to collections management solutions
The Museum has just completed a procurement and will work with its new supplier to deliver a CMS over an estimated period of 2 years (2023-2025).
You will work directly with Project Manager, Business Analysts, Data Architects/Engineers and Test Analysts and will play a key role in delivering the new CMS as part of the programme and in line with the Museum’s ambitious digital strategy.
This is a varied and evolving role which will be an integral part of the RECODE implementation team - a team of diverse experts working towards setting new standards in programme delivery. As one of the biggest natural history museums globally, the Museum contributes significantly to the worldwide scientific, geodiversity, biodiversity, and conservation communities. The RECODE programme will play its part in contributing our learned knowledge and new technology to the community in accordance with our vision to further global research, improve the management of natural history collections and provide future-proof technology.
The duration of this role is 24 months, which will cover early engagement with our new platform supplier. The RECODE programme is a critical endeavour for the Museum and as such there is an expectation that the role will be extended to accommodate the full implementation of a solution to Go-live and future continuous improvement in subsequent phases or to ensure critical roles continue in case of delays
About you

• Tertiary qualification in technology is preferable
• Proficient in test management and in-depth knowledge of all aspects of software testing principles, methods, techniques, and tools for planning acceptance criteria, executing tests (functional and non-functional) to verify and validate specified requirements, and assisting team in detecting errors by testing during the system implementation
• Strong knowledge of quality assurance and control processes and understanding aspects of SDLC practices
• Ability to generate test plans including estimated timeframes and deliverables in project setting
• Familiarity with Agile approach is preferable
• Experience of coordinating people to complete tasks
• Strong attention to detail
• Strong communication skills – both oral and written
• Excellent organisation and time management skills
