We're looking to appoint a Programmatic Executive to assist with the day-to-day analysis and running of our programmatic advertising operation.
This includes: analysing and identifying opportunities for improving advertising performance; conducting quarterly business reviews with our demand partners; identifying and evaluating potential new sources of unique advertising demand; and assisting with the ongoing development of our programmatic strategy.
This could be you if:
• you have maths or statistics A-level and/or equivalent demonstrable experience;
• you've got excellent spreadsheet skills (Excel or Google Spreadsheets);
• you've a keen interest... in developing your knowledge of ad tech through research, attending industry events and training courses, and hands-on testing;

We are seeking experienced developers to join our fully-remote multi-disciplinary product development and engineering team:
• Enhancing the functionality of our services and improving our codebase and infrastructure through both client-side and server-side development;
• Collaborating with other members of our product development and engineering team in our lean and iterative development approach;
• Reviewing other developers' code.
Our priorities for 2023, in continuing our social mission to provide our users with a healthy news diet, will include:
• Improving our curation algorithms' ability to make editorial decisions that are ethical and socially responsible, by taking into account a wider array of relevant data signals;
• This includes engaging our users in evaluating the quality of the news on the platform by crowdsourcing feedback and ratings;
• Building tools that allow our editorial team to influence our curation algorithms and hold them to account;
• Building out and optimising the biggest upgrade to NewsNow's format in its nearly 25-year history, a webapp built in Vue.js.
You and your skills
You will need to grasp the detail as well as the "big picture" of systems you come into contact with. As you learn, you'll need to correctly anticipate the interactions of these systems, particularly given planned modifications to their behaviour.
You will be able to engage authoritatively in technical discussions and debates around the specifications of projects throughout the entire software stack, and be adept at identifying when proposed specifications are ambiguous or will not achieve intended outcomes, and engaging with colleagues to find solutions.
While you don't need to be an expert in every area, you need to be confident and able to to demonstrate you can dive into the detail of any area should it become necessary in order to fulfil the requirements of the job (and we will train you on the specifics of our systems as you need it).
At NewsNow, we are highly collaborative, so you'll also be invited to work closely with other members of the team in conceiving development efforts, researching and specifying planned product enhancements, and reviewing each other's work.
Required skills:
• Mathematics, computer science or physics degree or equivalent experience, and high-level numeracy
• An understanding of OOP and the principles behind great software design, allowing you to write complex code that's clean, fast and scalable
• Experience: programming in modern high-level languages such as Python 3, Perl, Node, C, C++, Go; SQL (pref. MySQL); in full-stack roles
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Familiarity with Linux command line tools
In addition, some of the following will be an advantage:
• Experience with designing and implementing distributed or large-scale systems
• Database design, query optimisation skills
• Natural language processing
• Docker

We’re a developer-driven company. Two of the company’s three directors are developers — and that includes the CEO. This means that development is core to the business, developers are appreciated for their creative input, and the importance of investment in development — and avoiding technical debt — is understood.
We use a cutting-edge containerised development model, that makes agile development convenient and cheap, using Dockside, our online IDE. For each new task, Dockside lets us launch a disposable development container — aka a devtainer — which provides a self-contained fully-functioning development environment running a full live NewsNow stack (talking to a disposable live database clone) complete with high-end browser-based VS Code-compatible IDE. This makes forking, staging and code-review a breeze. From conception through roll out, branches and staged developments are continuously available as needed to developers, managers and testers for collaboration, feedback and review.
We run Debian Linux, Apache, MySQL with Python 3, Perl 5, and Node on the server-side, with TensorFlow/Keras for ML, and HTML5, CSS3 (SASS/SCSS) and modern JavaScript (OO ES6+ & Vue.js framework) on the client-side.

About the role
We are now looking for an experienced full stack developer who is excited by Dockside, and its potential to improve the developer experience, to drive forward development and champion its benefits.
You'll be working closely with our CEO/CTO, who is the founding developer of Dockside, on all aspects of development, from core architectural decisions to the feature roadmap.
As an open-source product, you'll be responsible for engaging with the Dockside community whether via Github pull requests or issues, Slack, Twitter or other channels.
Furthermore, you'll collaborate with our marketing team around Dockside promotion.
You'll be able to draw upon the experience and expertise of our wider dev team for creative planning and code review. From time to time we may also ask you to help out with coding up developments to the NewsNow web app, or our other open-source projects, and reviewing colleagues' code.
You and your skills
You will be experienced in developing complex client-server web applications and confident doing so single-handedly. You will also need:
• Vue.js (or experience working with a modern front-end framework such as React or Angular and a willingness to pick up Vue.js quickly) and build tools (e.g. webpack)

We are seeking a passionate and experienced Digital Marketing Manager with the drive to own campaigns from their conception through to execution and evaluation for a wide variety of purposes, formats and media.
You will play a pivotal role in:
• Growing brand awareness and audiences internationally through a combination of advertising and SEO.

At NewsNow, the marketing team is also responsible for running and evaluating our programmatic advertising operation, and you will be expected to play a part in this.

For this role you will need:
• Experience delivering campaigns across a variety of digital marketing channels.

About the role
We are seeking a highly-experienced Linux Site Reliability/Network Engineer who is willing to flex to software development, to join our multidisciplinary product development and engineering team supporting the growth and development of our news discovery platform in better serving the needs of our users to access credible, independent and public interest journalism and further our social mission.
As we prepare to roll out the biggest transformation in our web stack in 25 years - a brand new design built in Vue - we are embarking on further major undertakings: to improve our curation algorithms' ability to make editorial decisions that are ethical and socially responsible; to improve the tools available to our editorial team to influence our curation algorithms and hold them to account; to engage our power users in evaluating the quality of the news on the platform and assisting us curating it; to pioneer a reader funding trial that will eventually engage users in supporting public interest journalism.
Our Senior Network/Software Engineer will collaborate with colleagues to help us realise these goals through the development and maintenance of our software and hardware stack (as needed), and playing a part in our on-call support rota helping keep NewsNow running 24/7.
You and your skills
You will need to grasp the detail as well as the "big picture" of systems you come into contact with. As you learn, you'll need to correctly anticipate the interactions of these systems, particularly given planned modifications to their behaviour.
You will be able to engage authoritatively in technical discussions and debates around the specifications of projects throughout the entire software stack, and be adept at identifying when proposed specifications are ambiguous or will not achieve intended outcomes, and engaging with colleagues to find solutions.
While you don't need to be an expert in every area, you need to be confident and be able to to demonstrate you can dive into the detail of any area should it become necessary in order to fulfill the requirements of the job (and we will train you on the specifics of our systems as you need it).
At NewsNow, we are highly collaborative, so you'll also be invited to work closely with other members of the team in conceiving development efforts, researching and specifying planned product enhancements, and reviewing each other's work.
For the site reliability/network engineer aspects of the role (25-75% of your time), the core skills you will need are:
• MySQL (query performance/index analysis/tuning, administration, replication)
• Docker
• Linux / Debian system administration including command line tools, logical volume management, filesystems, system security including SSH+SSL, kernels
• Layer 2+3 networking including DNS, iptables firewalling, routing and bridging
• Scripting and automation with bash and Perl
• Experience of computer hardware specification/installation/configuration/firmware upgrades (and it may be necessary to travel to our London data centre on occasion)
