The National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) seeks an Economics Communications graphics creator, writer, and editor to support its program of research dissemination in digital and print media. This position involves working with a team of professionals, including the President and the Director of Communications. The NBER (www.nber.org) is the nation’s leading nonprofit economic research organization. It conducts and disseminates research on, but does not make policy recommendations about, a wide range of economic issues. This research is carried out by a network of more than 1,700 affiliated scholars at leading colleges, universities, and business schools throughout North America.

Responsibilities include:
• Translating complex, cutting edge economics findings into concise summaries and accompanying graphics for a general audience
• Reviewing and proofing content before publication
• Providing administrative and logistical support for production of research bulletins for digital and print distribution
• Managing and advancing NBER social media efforts, including drafting content, scheduling posts, and monitoring account activity
• Supporting the presentation of NBER research outputs on the NBER website
• Carrying out other duties as assigned, including undertaking special projects from outside the communications information area that advance the NBER’s research mission

Qualifications:

The successful applicant must be able to understand econometric results in research studies, to identify the key results of a research paper, and to craft a summary narrative and figure, from beginning to end. Experience with graphical tools is a strong plus, but we will also train on the needed skillsets (Adobe Illustrator and Datawrapper.de). Experience writing, copyediting, and proofreading is desired.

Applicants must have a B.A. in economics or communications, ideally with coursework or experience in both fields. Experience with statistical analysis software such as STATA is helpful. So are strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and capacity to work on team projects. The NBER’s collaborative work environment requires the ability to coordinate with other team members while also taking initiative.

The successful applicant will have excellent interpersonal communication skills, will be comfortable working independently or as part of a team, will be able to meet deadlines and balance competing priorities, will be detail-oriented, flexible and precise, and will be prepared to tackle new responsibilities with opportunities for career advancement.

Position Purpose

Provides technical support to administrative offices by translating their business needs into technology requirements for the implementation and ongoing maintenance of technology solutions. Manages complex projects in support of these functional areas as well as core IT projects as required. • Manages projects of varying complexity, including collaboration with outside vendors and internal stakeholders within IT and across the organization.
• Tests and maintains software and web applications, including integration with backoffice databases and other solutions in the portfolio.
• Develops and modifies reports, investigates data/integration issues, and supports report integrity with functional offices.
• Collaborates with system administrators and vendors to upgrade and test existing systems both on-premise and in the cloud.
• Supports staff and researchers using NBER technology resources, including advocacy for the benefits of new features and improvements to inefficient processes.
• Collaborates with the Director on business intelligence opportunities in support of ongoing modernization efforts.
• Researches and evaluates new technologies in support of organizational goals.
• Communicates complex technical directions verbally and in written communications to a wide variety of audiences.

Minimum Required Technical Skills and Qualifications
• 5+ years project management experience.
• Experience supporting technology upgrades in finance and/or administration strongly preferred.
• Experience supporting cloud/SaaS migrations strongly preferred.
• Experience in implementing and maintaining databases as well as report writing and data retrieval.
• Knowledge of MS SQL Server, MySQL, MS Excel, MS Access.
• Experience supporting software on modern operating systems, including Windows 10 and Windows Server.
