Position Summary:

The Senior Editor is responsible for managing the development and execution of numerous single-topic, newsstand-only magazine issues each year, delivering world-class editorial from conceptualization and commissioning through production and publication. The Senior Editor is passionate about storytelling and story development and will commission and edit work from contributors to fulfill an extensive publishing calendar across a variety of topics, from history to health to travel and more. As a member of National Geographic’s Editorial team, the Senior Editor works collaboratively with designers, photo editors, graphics specialists, cartographers, and print and digital producers to ensure high-quality work is delivered on deadline and with excellence.

Responsibilities:
• Manage numerous single topic magazine issues/year in science, travel, history, and other categories, from outline and flat plan development though manuscript review and research stages; collaborate with design and photo on layout; and oversee preparation for handoff to production editor
• Ensure that all pieces of the project come together in a timely manner and adhere to word counts, factual accuracy, and other specs
• Adapt excerpts of published titles for nationalgeographic.com
• Report to Senior Editorial Manager on project development and challenges, assist in title management, including contracts, scheduling, production stages, and administrative tasks, as needed
• Develop, nurture, and maintain new and ongoing relationships with writers and industry professionals

Minimum Requirements:
• Minimum of 6 years of publishing experience that demonstrates increasing editorial responsibility
• Strong attention to detail, excellent organizational skills, understanding of the editorial process
• Excellent writing and verbal communications skills and strong knowledge of the National Geographic brand and mission
• Ability to take overall responsibility for concept and content, as well as manage creative relationships
• Ability to manage multiple projects at once, on deadline.

Your Impact

Responsibilities Include
• Production Coordination (40%): Working in collaboration with the Showrunner and Producers, the AP is responsible for coordinating the pre-production, field shoots, and post-production phases of a media project. During pre-production, this person secures location permits, coordinates logistics, makes travel arrangements, creates call sheets, and organizes shoot documents for the team heading out into the field. During post-production, the AP assists the Production team with media management and long-term organization of media assets.
• Deliverables and Legal Documentation (40%): The Associate Producer maintains all legal documentation throughout the production. The Associate Producer will work with the Producer and Production Manager to finalize and deliver all required deliverables to network on time. The Associate Producer is responsible for reviewing, researching, collecting, and filing legal documents with an emphasis on stock footage, music, appearance releases and location permits. The Associate Producer completes the ‘Legal Binder' for each project and archives all project assets.
• Footage Research (20%): The Associate Producer researches stock footage and photos, working closely with the Producers and to determine needs. The Associate Producer must search multiple footage databases and proactively seek out new sources of stock footage. The AP is responsible for providing footage with appropriate rights clearances for the video project’s use, working with the Legal department to check and track footage rights throughout the editing process.

• Solid understanding of the processes and workflows of media production.

• While in-depth technical skills are not required, the successful candidate must be familiar with all aspects of production in order to communicate effectively with the team.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint, as well as the Google Office suite.

The salary range for this position starts at $58,000.

Job Summary:

The Photo Editor is responsible for researching, curating, and editing visual content for National Geographic's most visible platforms, with a particular focus on digital. This includes content for NationalGeographic.com and its app, Instagram and other social platforms, and our email newsletters.

Bringing a great eye, digital-first mindset, and editorial integrity to the role, he/she/they will work quickly and accurately to research visual content, collaborating with National Geographic editors and staff photographers as well as contributing photographers and writers. While the Photo Editor will work across a range of subjects-including wildlife, nature, science, travel-this role will have a special focus on developing a visual language and approach to our digital content about history and archaeology. The role offers an opportunity to apply knowledge and appreciation for visual storytelling and photojournalism as well as new ideas to develop fresh ways to represent our stories visually and to reach new audiences.

Responsibilities:

• Photographic Research: Research, curate, and license photography for all platforms, with a focus on our digital platforms; and to provide support on workflow, billing, contracts, and other photo logistics. Ensure that budgets and deadlines are met; caption information is gathered and disseminated; verify credit line; check image veracity when in question; and make images available for broader use across platforms.

• Digital Production: Design and build stories in CMS with eye to strong visual pacing.

• Research and pitch visually innovative and original uses of existing images and packages, demonstrating an understanding of the different platforms and audiences.

• Photo Production: Collaborate with staff photographers on portraiture, reportage, conceptual, or still life; work with ideas and photographers in the studio or on location.
