Job Purpose
You will start your journey as a Trainee Operational Meteorologist in late July/early August 2023 with an induction period and Aeronautical Meteorological Observer training. This will be a combination of remote learning and in person training at one of our Defence stations. In September 2023 you will start the Operational Meteorologist Foundation Course (OMFC). Our internationally renowned training programme will likely be delivered remotely by the People Development Team. Youll then move to one of our Defence stations to complete your on-the-job training (OJT) and qualify as an Operational Meteorologist with the Aeronautical Meteorological Forecasting (AMF) qualification.
We have many Defence stations across the UK and abroad. During your training you will be asked for location preferences to help us allocate posts but we're not able to guarantee locations. The allocations are dependent on the business need and training capacity at each site, and the location may change between your on-the-job training and qualification.
Once you are qualified as an Operational Meteorologist, youll work at the forefront of weather and climate science, interpreting real-time data, delivering meteorological services and advising our diverse customer group. You will be at the heart of the Met Offices operations, using our state-of the-art technology and weather information to support our partners in across a number of sectors including our public weather service and Defence.
In addition to your civilian role as an Operational Meteorologist, you will also be joining the Mobile Met Unit (MMU) which is a Sponsored Reserve unit of the Royal Air Force (RAF). Alongside your meteorologist training on the OMFC, you will be fully trained as an RAF Sponsored Reserve Officer and experience the adventures of being a military meteorologist. On completion of your RAF basic training you will be available to deploy as an RAF Reservist on military exercises and operations worldwide. This could involve flying around the world to operating under canvas and camping in the field, challenging yourself with adventurous activities or joining dining-in nights
As our Trainee Operational Meteorologist MMU, the key duties are:
• Preparing and delivering weather forecasts and impact-based advice to customers through a variety of media.
• Monitoring current and developing weather situations, taking decisive action where required in order to advise customers in a comprehensive and timely manner.
• Working closely with other meteorologists across the Met Office network to ensure we communicate a consistent weather story.
• Managing and prioritising workload effectively, particularly in changing circumstances.
• Delivering services on time, in full and to the quality and standards customers expect from the Met Office.
• Deploying on operations and exercises across the world to provide meteorological support to the UK Armed Forces

• To hold (or will graduate in summer 2023 with) a degree in meteorology, a physical science, mathematics, engineering or similar (at 2:2 or higher).
• A-level mathematics and AS physics or the direct equivalent (e.g. IB, Scottish Highers).

There are additional allowances dependent upon your location and working pattern.
