Purpose

This position independently prepares, examines and evaluates steel samples for various metallographic tests, such as microstructure, decarburization, grain size, surface finish roughness, blue fracture, and microstructure banding and nonmetallic inclusions following industry and/or TimkenSteel procedures. In addition, this position creates timely and accurate Certificates of Test for TimkenSteel Customers on a regular basis. The associate compiles & compares the test result data to the order's appropriate specifications to verify metallurgical compliance. It accumulates & preserves the completed Certificate of Test and related documentation as a historical record by regular shipments to imaging.

Responsibilities
• Responsible for the accuracy and consistency of the sample preparation and the metallographic characteristic rating.
• Familiarity & understanding of industry and customer technical specifications for standard nonmetallic inclusion ratings, different kinds of grain size, microstructure types and decarburization.
• Recognizing and reporting out of tolerance conditions. Reports of sample test results and their conformance to technical specification must be complete and accurate to facilitate the met release of associated orders.
• Ensuring that all information on each Certificate of Test is complete is accurate, and consistent when filling for Certification Processor.
• Metallography associates use Sample Tracking, Cert System, Thermal Treat Databases, and TimkenSteel intranet applications.
• Collect, compile, measure, summarize, record, and report metallographic technical data.
• Demonstrates behavior & performance to effectively contribute to an independent & self-managing team.
• The capital equipment used to prepare and examine metallographic samples must be properly maintained and calibrated as required by frequencies established in our Quality System.
