MDPI (Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute) is a leading open access scientific publisher and provider of scientific information services. It publishes over 200 peer-reviewed open access journals in various fields of science, technology, and medicine, with a commitment to high quality and rigorous peer-review process. MDPI also provides a range of services including scientific editing, publishing, and indexing. Its mission is to foster open science and open access to scientific knowledge by providing an efficient, high quality, and cost-effective service for authors and readers. MDPI's goal is to promote the advancement of science and technology worldwide.

In 1996, the first edition of Molecules was published. The Editorial Board was set up in 1995, and the first editorial was written at that time. The journal was highly successful and MDPI then took full control.

Beall then removed MDPI from his now defunct list in October 2015.
