This is a fixed term appointment for 2 years

The Centre for Economic Performance (CEP) is seeking to appoint a post-doctoral Research Economist for a two-year period to work on the wellbeing cost-effectiveness of major policy options open to government. Together with our team, you will evaluate the impacts of policy options on the wellbeing of all those affected in the population, work out their costs, and calculate their relative cost-effectiveness. This will involve reviewing literature, conducting original research on the causal effects of different policies on wellbeing, interpreting government budgets, and using all these to conduct cost-effectiveness analyses.

The project will be led by Dr Christian Krekel and Professor Lord Richard Layard, and will be assisted by an Advisory Board chaired by Lord Gus O’Donnell (former UK Cabinet Secretary). The project will lead to a high-profile published... report, in which the successful candidate will be a co-author, as well as published journal articles. The successful candidate will play a major role in the planning, design, and implementation of the project, and will also be involved in the Centre’s work on wellbeing differences across geographical areas. The role holder will have sufficient time to develop a research agenda of their own within the context of the Centre’s work programme, and there will be plenty of opportunity to collaborate with other researchers in the Centre and the wider LSE.

The Research Economist should have a PhD in Economics or a closely related quantitative social science discipline. The successful candidate has either already published in peer-reviewed journals or shows an emerging track record of promising future publications.

The Research Economist should have the ability to identify key research questions, select appropriate methods of empirical investigation, and interpret results. Also essential are: advanced analytical and technical skills in handling and quantitative analysis of large complex datasets; experience in the use of STATA and other econometrics software; and excellent understanding of statistical methods, especially applied microeconometrics. The Research Economist should ideally have an interest in wellbeing as well as previous experience in policy issues related to wellbeing.

We are looking to hire a highly-skilled and motivated individual to work under the direction of Sandra Sequeira. The job will entail close collaboration on a number of new and ongoing projects on a broad range of topics in applied microeconomics, development economics and political economy, using “big data” and experimental and quasi-experimental methods to identify causal effects and test the predictions of economic models.

The successful candidate should have a completed Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) and/or a completed (or nearly completed) Master’s degree in economics or other closely related discipline, strong quantitative and data analysis skills, strong programming skills and confidence with the use of different data... management software and the ability to manage own areas of responsibility independently without constant direct supervision. Experience in Stata is essential and experience with Arc Gis and machine learning is desirable.

The Department of International Development promotes interdisciplinary postgraduate teaching and research on processes of political, economic, and social development and change. We are dedicated to understanding problems of poverty and late development within local communities, as well as national and international political and economic systems.

The appointed candidate will contribute to the intellectual life of the School through conducting and publishing outstanding quality research, engaging in high quality teaching as instructed by the Head of Department, and participating in the School and wider Department activities.

Based... in the Department, the Fellow’s teaching will be concentrated in the MSc in Economic Policy for International Development. A key part of the work will involve supervising, teaching and examining masters’ level students through lectures, seminars, course work and tutorials. This is a Fellowship intended for an early-career scholar; it is expected that the fellow will dedicate a significant amount of time to their own research, writing and professional development.

Candidates should have completed, or be close to completing, a PhD from a social science discipline with strong quantitative training such as Economics, Public Policy, Political Economy or related subjects.. Excellent communication and presentation skills and the ability to work in close partnership with other teachers, including on a one-on-one basis and in small groups, and to provide effective support, as necessary is also essential. Having research experience in a developing country is also desirable.
