Refining Engineer - Reliability Rotating Equipment

Job Summary

The Marathon Los Angeles Refinery is seeking a Refining Engineer - Reliability Rotating Equipment to maintain and improve operational availability, optimize equipment life cycle cost and achieve best in class reliability. This position supports multiple operating area teams on issues related to rotating equipment and collaborates with other departments on a daily basis. The Rotating Equipment Reliability Engineer will develop an understanding of priorities on rotating equipment, drive corrective action on known issues and effectively communicate to all respective stakeholders. This position works Monday-Thursday 10 hour days, supporting a 24/7 refining operation. This positions typical on-call requirement is approximately two times a year and supports large TAR events approximately once every three years.

Key Responsibilities:

Maintenance and Area Team Support
• Provide support to multiple operating Area Teams to maintain and improve operational safety and availability.
• Serve as a technical resource to the rotating equipment advisors, maintenance foremen, and maintenance technicians in the troubleshooting and repair of site Rotating Equipment.
• Provide training on Rotating Equipment and support systems to Maintenance and Operational personnel.
• Support the pump seal reliability improvement program. Works directly with Flowserve Application Engineer, approves upgrade recommendations and champions upgrades through the appropriate budgeting process.
• Support Lost Opportunity allocation process, ensuring work orders in SAP are correctly coded and lost opportunity event data is accurate.
• Submit and approve equipment Preventative Maintenance (PM) plans to ensure compliance with Refinery Standard Practices and reliability initiatives. Assist Maintenance in PM Optimization efforts.
• Perform equipment condition assessments to determine fitness for service and to develop equipment care and repair plans. Identify and/or develop applicable repair procedures and QA/QC plans.
• Identify and manage a list of bad actor equipment, facilitates root cause failure analysis, and provides recommendations for improvement.
• Identify critical equipment spare part requirements and ensures warehouse storage is aligned with the plan.
• Identify and maintain a list of obsolete equipment and manages the replacement/upgrade plan.
• Review equipment repair reports from outside shops, provides input on inspection requirements and approves repair plans ensuring compliance with Marathon specifications.
• Interface with MPC ROTAG advisory group to share lessons learned and best practices. Engage management to champion specification changes to improve equipment reliability and department efficiency.

Projects and TAR Support
• Develop Project Request Forms (PRFs) for reliability improvements and champions those through completion.
• Define expectations and project deliverables related to Mechanical Integrity and reliability requirements, and audits deliverables to ensure requirements are met during the project life cycle.
• Provide direction on site preferred technologies and methodologies.
• Review project documentation, P&ID’s, and data sheets to ensure accuracy.
• Provide maintenance and project scope items to the Major Maintenance and TAR departments. Ensures shutdown scope is well justified, documented correctly and meets maintenance specifications and industry best practices.
• Provide technical support to major Maintenance and TAR execution team, assisting with equipment inspection, QA/QC and FCO process.

Health, Safety, Environmental and Mechanical Integrity Stewardship
• Participate in safety walks and field audits on a regular basis.
• Serve as a technical resource to the Process Safety Department during Area Team HAZOP reviews.
• Lead and/or support incident investigations to determine root cause and identify corrective actions.
• Support MOC process and ensures technical documentation is maintained per company policy.
• Maintain a list of Mechanical Integrity covered equipment.
• Champion Mechanical Integrity program and the Major Equipment Deficiency process with key stakeholders.

Personal Development
• Maintain a personal development plan and attends training to foster professional development to support career goals.
• Assess performance against benchmark expectations and develops plan to close gaps and achieve higher performance.
• Perform self-study to bring new technology applications to improve the business.

Minimum Qualifications

Education, Experience and Skills
• Must have a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering.
• Must have 3 years of post-degree experience as a Mechanical Engineer in a refinery, petrochemical and other heavy related industry.
• Experience interpreting and applying industrial and company standards.
• Must be proficient with Microsoft: Word, Excel and Outlook.
• Must be able to wear appropriate PPE in the refinery and be able to physically perform all tasks in the field.
• Must have a clean and valid driver’s license.
• Must be legally authorized to work in the US without the need for future VISA sponsorship.
• Must be able to travel 5% or less.
• Strong understanding of Management of Change requirements and process.
• Ability to understand mechanical systems and cross-section drawings to troubleshoot field equipment.
• Ability to successfully communicate complex system information across various audiences, from hourly personnel to Refinery management.
• Desire to learn new concepts and push the business in new direction to achieve best in class performance.

Preferred Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering is preferred.
• Strong working knowledge of all applicable industry standards for rotating equipment.
• Experience in the operation, maintenance and troubleshooting of rotating equipment such as pumps, compressors, turbines, and gas engines.
• Experience with machinery control systems such as anti-surge protection systems, turbine governors and overspeed protection, and performance control software.
• Experience in the use of application of machinery condition monitoring tools such as Bentley Nevada System 1, SKF, CSI, Prognost, and Windrock.
• Experience in the installation large machinery equipment, including foundation design, grouting, pipe strain, and alignment.
• Working knowledge and application experience of RCM principles, RCFA and FMEA methodology and application.
• Understanding of PHA, LOPA and SIL as applied to industrial rotating equipment in a PSM environment.
• Proficient in troubleshooting field rotating equipment and machinery to ensure safe and reliable operations
• Experience utilizing CMMS software and SAP.

This Operational Technology (OT) Architect position within the Refining IT department will have responsibility for the network, server, and Distributed Control Systems (DCS) architecture throughout the Refining organization. This position will play a vital role in developing the organizations future vision, product roadmap, and value stream flight map as well as driving innovation in technology to deliver forward looking OT solutions. A successful candidate will have both a focus on Enterprise products and of Field capabilities to drive digital adoption.

This position will have responsibility to set strategy for the onsite Refining OT teams. They must effectively collaborate with Refining stakeholders as well as peers across IT, Infrastructure, and Cybersecurity.

The ideal candidate will have a solid understanding of OT networking principles and be able to define and apply industry best practices to our suite of OT technologies and tools while also providing thought leadership to the organization.

Key Responsibilities

+ Design, develop, and implement OT architecture solutions in alignment with both the Enterprise Architecture (EA) program and the Refining Technologist organization across the enterprise.

Education and Experience

Summary:

The Global Marine Operations Group is responsible for the safe, efficient, and reliable marine transportation of petroleum products. The Port Captain role will work closely with Commercial Marine Operations, Marine Assurance, Demurrage, and the Refineries/Terminals to support this objective, as well as provide subject matter expertise to ensure safe and efficient operations between the vessel and terminal. Key Responsibilities:

• Manages operational interface as a Marine SME between terminal and refinery berths and tankers, Articulated Tug Barge’s (ATB’s), tugs, barges, and marine service providers.
• Reviews and coordinates vessel pre-arrival documentation.
• Coordinates with Commercial, Refining, and Logistics to optimize marine transfer operations and ensure safe operations and environmental stewardship.
• Provides marine operational support to Commercial, Refining, and Logistics.
• Serves as a key member of the Marine Crisis Management Team.

Minimum Requirements:
• Bachelor’s degree from a Maritime Academy required or a High School Diploma with 4 years senior deck or engine officer experience required in lieu of the bachelor’s degree.
• Minimum 4 years of sea time required.
• Extensive knowledge of tanker and marine terminal operations preferred.
• Ability to obtain a passport.
