The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is a neutral, independent, and impartial humanitarian organization seeking to protect and assist people affected by armed conflict and other situations of violence around the world.

The ICRC Regional Delegation for the US & Canada, based in Washington D.C, is at the heart of our efforts to deliver on the ICRC's mandate, working to secure much needed and widespread support for our work in conflict zones. We cultivate relationships with US government agencies, civil society, donors, and the media. The team also works closely with our partners such as the American Red Cross and the Canadian Red Cross as part of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced communications expert to join our team!

The Communications Officer reports to the Head of Communications for the US & Canada region. This position will work in close coordination with the Washington delegation, the Americas region, the ICRC headquarters in Geneva, and other colleagues throughout the world. As a public-facing focal point for the ICRC in the US & Canada, this person helps position the delegation by promoting international humanitarian law (IHL) and raising awareness about our key humanitarian issues in armed conflict and other situations of violence for the US & Canadian public.

Accountabilities & Functional Responsibilities
• With minimum supervision, implements relevant activities and develops tools for the regional delegation in the US, shaping often complex topics for different audiences and promoting international humanitarian law (IHL).
• Adopts a newsroom approach to analyze news trends and identify opportunities to communicate through different channels. Pitches global stories and leadership interviews to media and delivers key messaging on relevant issues for the ICRC in response to media questions.
• Supports the delegation with all communication needs, both internal and external, at multiple and often simultaneous working levels (i.e. local, regional, global) and across many different files.
• Helps to implement and evaluate a strategic social media presence for the delegation, including the management of the delegations Twitter handle, and assists with all content production.
• Supports in networking with relevant stakeholders and represents the ICRC to various audiences. Cultivates new relationships through partnerships, special projects, and public events.
• Follows political, security, military, and humanitarian developments, as well as other issues relevant to the ICRC's reputation/perception and capacity to operate in places where the ICRC works.
• Coordinates with communications partners at the American Red Cross and Canadian Red Cross on media, joint visibility projects and campaign promotion.
• Provides technical and administrative support to the communication team and delegation (e.g. book orders, budget tracking, and event organization) when required.

Education, Skills and Experience Required
• Minimum 3 years' experience with demonstrable skills in communications, public relations, social media, journalism, and/or press offices, and a bachelors degree in journalism, international affairs, communications, or similar.
• Experience working in a complex organisation demonstrating a high-level of diplomacy when liaising and negotiating with both internal and external stakeholders and partners.
• Exceptionally strong writing, factchecking and editorial judgement. Experience adhering to guidelines and editorial standards. Attention to detail is a must.
• Working knowledge of Sprinklr, Hootsuit, Cision, Muckrack, and/or Adobe advantageous but not required.
• Proven track record interacting with media and the public through public affairs, communications, or journalism.
• Self-starter with solid interpersonal skills, able to work both independently and as directed within a small team including with remote partners.
• Spanish and/or French is advantageous but not essential.

The ICT Specialist 2 installs and maintains all ICT systems and services and provides user support to the ICRC Washington Regional delegation, the ICRC New York Delegation, and other sites covered by the Washington Regional Delegation (Canada, Guantanamo base, etc.).

ACCOUNTABILITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Independently installs, maintains, repairs, and monitors ICT equipment in line with ICRC standards.
• As a part of global support services, handles L2 tickets or escalates as per agreed workflow.
• Ensures existing ICT infrastructure is functional.
• Ensures that global/country-level policies and procedures are implemented and followed.
• Briefs, advises, and trains end-users and peers on the ICRC's ICT systems.
