A private family with a residence in midtown Manhattan and an estate in the Great Neck area of Long Island is seeking an experienced private chef to work full-time providing meal preparation and shopping for their active, multi-generational family. The primary residence will be Manhattan and the job will be based there between September and May. The home in Great Neck will be the... primary location during the Summer months. The chef’s schedule can vary at times but includes 2 consecutive days off per week, including additional time for shopping. The core schedule for 17 weeks of summer (Memorial Day – Labor Day) will be Wednesday through Sunday and can generally be expected to be spent in Long Island. During the remaining 35 weeks of the year, the schedule will generally be Saturday through Wednesday. The schedule is always susceptible to change. Flexibility is vital to work between the two residences as needed and each week will typically include 50-60 hours.
The chef will be the point person and manager for all food service, stocking, purchasing, and planning for the residence. This person will be required to prepare, provide, and serve lunch and dinner daily for employers and provide lunch (without service) for residence staff, provide staple snacks and meals for the home, lead some special events held at the residence from small to mid-sized dinner parties, provide weekly menus for employers that meet owner's dietary needs and restrictions, keep a running record of favorite meals and recipes, and work continuously on new recipes and repertoire. The chef works as part of a larger residence team and will manage all aspects of the kitchen. Members of the employer's immediate and extended family visit frequently for dinner, and the chef is expected to handle that easily.
The ideal candidate has exceptional organizational, multi-tasking, and prioritizing skills, exerts strong leadership skills, and has a calm and collected attitude that allows the ability to focus on problem-solving. The chef should be trustworthy and discrete, specifically as relates to confidential business and family information, and will be expected to be highly sociable with strong interpersonal skills, diplomatic, respectful, cooperative, adaptable, and poised given regular daily interaction with guests and the family. They should also show a strong sense of urgency, sensitivity to adhering to priorities, and meticulous attention to detail and accuracy. The ideal candidate should be open to feedback and improvements overall, hold the utmost discretion and confidentiality standards, and should have an upbeat and transparent personality.
The ideal candidate will have at least 5 years of experience working for high profile families and understand the level of service that is required. A flexible schedule, a valid driver's license and clean driving record, and an up-to-date COVID vaccine are all must-haves for the role. The salary range offered is $130,000 to $175,000 per year and the rate will reflect the experience and skill-set of the hired candidate.
