The Garden Center Associate is responsible for assisting customers in plant selection, unloading and loading plant material, cashiering, answering phone calls, watering, re-stocking plants, maintaining plant displays, and other activities that support the daily operations of the garden center.

Position Summary

Old World Wisconsin is a 600-acre outdoor living history museum located in Eagle, Wisconsin. Guests explore homes, farms, and businesses that come from across Wisconsin, exploring stories of place and perseverance from the 1840s to the 1930s. With a focus on hands exploration and immersive spaces, OWW is a celebrated destination for families and friends making new memories, sharing stories, and connecting to Wisconsin's past as they get inspired for their own futures. Staff work in historic indoor and outdoor spaces in the beauty of the Kettle Moraine State Forest to bring history to life for tens of thousands of guests each summer.

The Historic Gardener will perform planting, harvesting, and garden maintenance for more than a dozen heirloom gardens each reflecting a unique historic and ethnic story. They ensure accurate and immersive outdoor spaces to create exceptional guest experiences in alignment with the Mission of Old World Wisconsin and the Wisconsin Historical Society.

The Historic Gardener works under the lead of the Landscape and Gardens Coordinator, and the supervision of the General Manager, Facilities & Grounds.

As directed, the Historic Gardener also collaborates with the Experiences and Events team and assists in providing knowledge and training to Experience Facilitators, better enabling them to share the story of each garden as part of the guest experience and to assist with garden maintenance.

Duties:

Tend and Steward the Historic Gardens
• Bring to life historical gardens of 19th and 20th century immigrant and migrant families using heirloom plants, materials and techniques appropriate to the specific ethnic community and historical time period. Assist the Landscape and Gardens Coordinator in the planning and sourcing of seed and materials for historical gardens.
• Ensure proper daily care and cultivation of heirloom plants (in ground and in the greenhouse) through garden work including weeding, trimming, transplanting, pruning and fertilizing as directed.
• Assist the Landscape and Gardens Coordinator in creating and maintaining training materials and support documentation for historic garden work.
• Create and maintain schedules for daily garden tending, to be executed in collaboration with staff and volunteers
• Communicate via established channels to report on maintenance, supplies and other issues as needed
• Routinely tour and access public areas and work areas for safety, cleanliness, and comfort.

Program Support
• Working with the larger team, collaborate on event and program design relating to the use of historical gardens as an important aspect of the OWW guest experience.
• Participate and assist with the execution of public programming, donor events, and special projects
• Ensure training on and monitoring of safety standards as it relates to garden spaces

Salary Information

Pay is $16.18 per hour. This classification is in schedule and class 03-09.

Please note this is a Limited Term Employment position so it does not include paid time off or benefits upon hire.

Job Details

This seasonal position is for four to five days per week, including at least one weekend day per week.

A criminal background check will be conducted by WHS prior to an offer of employment to determine if the circumstances of any conviction may be related to the job.

This is a Limited Term Employment (LTE) position and limited to 1,039 hours.

Wisconsin residency is required for Limited Term Employment positions.

Limited Term Employment (LTE) positions are not civil service classified positions, do not give any rights to permanent civil service classified positions and do not lead to permanent status.

WHS does not sponsor work visas. Any appointment made will be contingent on the applicant being able to prove valid status to work in the United States.

All state employees are required to report their COVID vaccination status, whether vaccinated or not, and must provide supporting documentation if vaccinated. Newly hired employees will be required to submit this information within their first two weeks of employment.

Qualifications
• Knowledge of plant propagation, care and culture
• Knowledge of best practices and standards for gardens at a facility that is open to the public with experience at a museum or other attraction preferred
• Knowledge, skill and ability to sustain the Historic Gardens program or willingness to learn
• Knowledge, skill and ability to assist with developing the gardening skills of staff and volunteers
• Knowledge, skill, and ability to think on one’s feet and exhibit flexibility while ensuring exceptional guest experience
• Knowledge, skill and ability to safely and enthusiastically demonstrate and share historic gardens with the public
• Ability to communicate effectively with staff, guests, and volunteers of diverse backgrounds and interests
• Ability to carry out assigned duties with a minimum of supervision
• Ability to sufficiently and safely perform demonstration tasks in outdoor environment
• Ability to use hand tools and power equipment and to perform manual labor in all weather while in historic costume

Work Environment
• Work is performed outdoors in farm and wooded environments, including allergens and insects, in historic structures lacking climate control and in modern office environments
• Work involves daily contact with the public, facilitating experiences for a diverse array of guests and may involve dealing with difficult people, and large groups of people
• Days and hours may vary to accommodate specific programs and events

The Community Garden Coordinator will be responsible for overseeing and coordinating community garden related activities that further World Relief Triad initiatives in addressing food insecurity, holistic wellness, and community building. This position will allow a successful candidate the opportunity to address food insecurity needs exacerbated by COVID-19 through the facilitation of urban agricultural opportunities within the local refugee and immigrant community.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
• Provide support to community gardeners
• Coordinate engaging and age-appropriate, either in-person or virtually, educational opportunities for school-aged children focused on topics such as: nutrition, general health education, healthy cooking for kids, COVID-19 education and prevention, and other topics
• Facilitate development projects in the community garden as a means of building lasting community resources
• Provide reports to the team, management, funders, stakeholders, and the community, as needed
• Coordinate and engage local community members, both gardeners, and volunteers, in community garden workdays
• Actively participate in department meetings, staff development opportunities, program training, community activities, and organizational events
• Maintain accurate records of spending, project progress, client files, case notes, database entries, and reporting records

• Advanced MS office skills preferred
