As the Fermentation Process Engineer for Nature’s Fynd, you will be a key member of the Process Engineering team responsible for developing, scaling up, integrating, and optimizing our fermentation technology, at both pilot and commercial scales. The position will work with internal R&D, Engineering, and Manufacturing teams as well as external CMOs. You will be responsible for driving functionality, productivity, and product quality through experimentation, design, and implementation of our fermentation processes.

As the Fermentation Process Engineer, you will have the opportunity to design and manage equipment and processes that will help define how Nature’s Fynd achieves its pilot plant implementation, optimization of existing technologies, and subsequent commercialization of new technologies. You will be involved with innovation, execution, and managing fermentation processes that will have a lasting impact on the business. A vast majority of this job will be on site with <25% travel.

Primary Responsibilities:
• Development of new and optimization of existing fermentation and downstream processing (DSP) for Nature’s Fynd fermentation technology, from pilot to commercial scale
• Engineer and execute fermentation operating strategies and process control strategies based on a strong understanding of fermentation engineering principles
• Plan and execute fermentation experimental design (pilot & commercial scale) ensuring safety, effectiveness, and efficiency
• Collect, analyze, and interpret experimental (pilot & commercial scale), and actual production data
• Oversee equipment selection, modification, procurement, installation, and start-up in relation to fermentation
• Serve as the technical resource with respect to fermentation manufacturing scale-up and operations
• Evaluate and optimize the fermentation process for future facilities and CMOs. Participate in technology transfer to subsequent stages of commercial manufacturing
• Identify and implement best practices in fermentation scale-up and technology deployment
• Communicate with key stakeholders in R&D, engineering, manufacturing, and relevant third parties. Prepare mass balances, process flow diagrams, piping & instrumentation diagrams, technical, and experimental reports, techno-economic feasibility assessments for communicating work outcomes and future recommendations economic analysis, SOPs

Professional Experience & Qualifications:
• 5+ years in a fermentation process engineering role, supporting piloting, scale-up, and manufacturing, ideally in a food manufacturing environment
• In-depth technical knowledge and extensive hands-on experience with Fermentation processes, Scale-up/scale-down techniques, including bench scale, pilot scale, and commercial scale
• Knowledgeable about downstream processing design and equipment selection, Technology transfer, Both laboratory-scale and commercial-scale fermentation operations
• Demonstrated hands-on experience in pilot and industrial-scale fermentation of food ingredients. Applied knowledge in statistics, process data analytics, control, and automation
• Bachelor's degree and Master's degree (preferred), in Chemical Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, or similar

The Sensory Scientist II will be responsible for managing sensory projects focused on our ingredient & its different formats. This position will report directly to the Sensory Manager & work closely with ingredient science, analytical, data science, quality, R&D, engineering, & product development. Responsibilities:
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams on complex projects & recommend appropriate sensory testing to support projects based on the company’s objectives
• Participate in cross-functional product and ingredient development projects and guide activities on improving sensory aspects of products/Ingredients
• Schedule, design & execute sensory tests, including panelist recruitment, survey software programing, sample prep, serving, & clean up
• Statistically analyze & report sensory data, drawing meaningful conclusions, & recommendations for product optimization

Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Sensory, Food Science or technical/related field
• 5+ years of food industry experience in a sensory role
• Strong fundamental knowledge of sensory principles, test design, execution & analyses
• Extensive working knowledge of all qualitative & quantitative sensory science methodologies, specifically Spectrum™ descriptive analysis
• Competency in sensory survey softwares (experience in RedJade would be beneficial)

As the Stationary Engineer for Nature’s Fynd, you will be a key member of the Maintenance Team, responsible for keeping our assets in good condition in order to allow us to meet our customer needs. The maintenance team will be working closely with operations and quality to ensure we work safely and making good quality product on time for our customers. This person will report directly to the Maintenance Manager, with a dotted line to the Operations Manager/Supervisors.

Duties & Responsibilities:
• Performing maintenance/repairs on equipment (especially utility and production equipment)
• Documenting work completed and parts that are used in our CMMS
• Making sure to work safely and helping to develop/execute proper safety protocols (LOTO, Confined Space Entry, etc)
• Working closely with contractors and vendors when repairing/maintaining equipment, including reaching out for support if needed
• Responding and supporting operations calls to troubleshoot equipment issues
• Working with the Maintenance Manager to update PMs to better maintain our assets
• Assisting in root cause analysis activities to identify ways to prevent re-occurrences
• Any other work related items as assigned

Requirements:
• Must have a City of Chicago Stationary Engineering License
• Will have a flexible work week, based on operational needs
• Will be working on weekends and holidays (as needed)
• Be willing to work OT as needed to support operations
• Strong mechanical acumen to do tasks such as rebuilding/replacing pumps and valves, changing belts and bearings, etc.
• Basic electrical skill set (such as able to use a meter and change a low voltage motor)
• Be able to lift 50 pounds

Position Responsibilities:
• Manages the operation of the pilot facility in the evaluation, modification, experimentation and development of biomaterials/materials/chemistry processing technology and new products

Experience:
• PhD degree in Chemistry / Chemical Engineering or related field of study or equivalent experience
• Minimum 5 years of experience in a relevant industry in scaling up novel processes and technologies (chemical, manufacturing, industrial or mechanical engineering)
• Deep understanding of Design of Experiment & JMP experience with strong understanding of statistical analysis applied to operations
• Knowledge and understanding of extrusion/injection molding/paper & pulp processing methods and relevant chemistries is preferred
• Demonstrated success working cross-functionally across engineering, marketing, business development
• Hands-on experience with analytical techniques and methodologies, e.g., DSC, TGA, Instron, FT-IR, UV/Vis Spectrophotometer, optical microscopes and various wet chemical techniques such as HPLC, LCMS, IC is a plus
• Six sigma, LEAN, Agile qualifications with applied experience in a manufacturing environment is a plus
