Friends of the Earth (FOE) is a national not for profit environmental organization driven by passion for a healthier and more just world. We push for the bold reforms that are needed. It’s an approach that has worked for five decades to produce important victories that help protect our planet and its people. We’re part of Friends of the Earth International, a federation of groups... working in more than 70 countries on today’s most urgent environmental and social issues.

To accomplish our mission, Friends of the Earth is working at the nexus of environmental protection, economic policy and social justice to fundamentally transform the way our country and the world value people and the environment. Our current campaigns focus on promoting clean energy and solutions to climate change, ensuring the food we eat and products we use are sustainable and safe for our health and the environment, and protecting marine ecosystems and the people who live and work near them. This work is carried out by our team of staff in our Berkeley, California and Washington, D.C. offices.

Corporate-controlled, chemical intensive industrial food production is increasingly harmful to people and the planet, contributing to hunger, disease, poverty and severe environmental damage, which particularly adversely impact communities of color. Simultaneously, this “too big to fail” system leaves us vulnerable to climate chaos and other disruptions which threaten food security. A healthy future is dependent on developing an alternative, sustainable and resilient food system. This is why Friends of the Earth’s Food and Agriculture Program is working to rapidly transition our food system to one that is sustainable, healthy and just. We carry out market and policy campaigns aimed at protecting pollinators, reforming animal agriculture and reducing the harmful environmental and social impacts of industrial agriculture, while advocating for local, just, humane, organic and sustainable food production.

Friends of the Earth is committed to justice and equality. We value diversity at all levels of the organization and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees. We believe that a range of perspectives makes our team more creative, flexible and impactful.

What We Look For: Friends of the Earth seeks an intern for its Agriculture & Climate Finance Program, which fights for shifts in policies and public and private finance that support a just transition away from chemical-intensive monocropping and factory farming to ecologically regenerative production of plants and a sustainable amount of pasture-based, higher welfare animal production. As part of this, we work to stop the financing of proposed factory farm projects before they are approved (or monitor them once they are approved), with a focus on Latin America.

Does this sound like you? If so, then this is the intern position for you. This is a paid, part-time internship. Intern must be able to commit to 15 hrs/week; at the rate of $17/hour. The length of the internship is 6-9 months.

Who You Are:

Supportive Collaborator: Participate and support activities of our global Stop Financing Factory Farming coalition meetings. Provide support for meeting and event logistics such as petition deliveries, creation of PowerPoints for webinars, meetings with policy makers, briefings, etc. Conduct research and compile relevant information on campaign villains and targets. Attend coalition meetings and other relevant meetings on behalf of the campaign. Help mobilize Friends of the Earth members and campaign partners to participate in key campaign moments such as days of action, sign-on letters, petitions and other calls to action.

Detail Oriented: Create online and offline public outreach and engagement materials. Provide general support for digital organizing tactics including social media posts, public comments, infographic content, and blog posts. Track corporate targets in the media and disseminate information to campaign members. Track public development bank investments in factory farming alongside a key partner, the International Accountability Project.

Effective Communicator: Identify engagement opportunities, maintain spreadsheets and conduct outreach to allied organizations (especially in the US, Latin America and Europe) and other stakeholders. Work with a wide range of colleagues in environmental, social justice, international organizations and policy arenas and have the opportunity to become familiar with how these different entities work.

Required Qualifications:
• Education and/or experience with campaigns, grassroots organizing and environmental or political work.
• A high school diploma or GED.
• Understanding of the harms of industrial animal agriculture, agroecology and other more sustainable models of agriculture, the intersection between food and climate and the connection between food justice and racial justice.
• Strong research, writing, and editing skills.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and basic Microsoft programs.
• A highly motivated, quick learner who is able to take initiative and work independently.
• All candidates must be authorized to work in the United States. FOE does not sponsor any employment related visas.

Preferred Qualifications:
• A background in environmental issues, racial justice, international development, and public policy.
• Experience and familiarity with collecting, analyzing, and summarizing reliable research.
• Background in international policy work.
• Fluency in Spanish and/or Portuguese.

Who We Are...

Friends of the Earth-U.S., founded by David Brower in 1969, is the U.S. voice of the world’s largest federation of grassroots environmental groups, with a presence in 75 countries. Friends of the Earth is a hard-hitting, progressive environmental organization that pulls no punches and speaks sometimes uncomfortable truth to power. It’s an approach that has worked over the last 50 years, resulting in landmark environmental laws, precedent-setting legal victories and groundbreaking reforms of domestic and international regulatory, corporate, and financial institution policies.

To accomplish our mission, Friends of the Earth works at the nexus of environmental protection, economic policy, and social justice to fundamentally transform the way our country and the world value people and the environment.

Deforestation is at the center of some of the planet’s most urgent, overlapping crises: the global climate emergency, unprecedented species loss, and an epidemic of violence against land and environmental defenders. Friends of the Earth’s International Forests program works to address the root causes of forest destruction and the marginalization of forest-dwelling communities by pressuring the world’s largest financial institutions to “defund deforestation;” advancing legislative and regulatory solutions; and amplifying the voices and struggles of frontline environmental human rights defenders.

What We Look For: Are you a passionate social change activist with a deep ecology vision, an international perspective and a keen critical sensibility oriented towards climate justice and social transformation? Are you a creative thinker and talented communicator? Are you a believer in using creative policy and mobilizing solutions to achieve large scale system change? Are you comfortable in policy debates and social movement spaces? Are you able to engage confidently with policy makers and corporate executives, while representing a bold progressive agenda? Are you a team player with a collaborative, movement-building mindset, excellent interpersonal communication skills, and an ability to work dynamically both independently and as part of a team?

If so, this is the position for you. We want you to succeed and we want to pay you a competitive wage that is in line with your experience. The salary range for this full-time remote role is $71,000-$79,000. Offers are determined based on relevant skills and experience required for the position.

Who You Are:

Relationship Builder: Build and maintain key relationships with journalists and social media influencers. Support and foster engagement with grassroots and frontline allies around the world to inform and take part in campaign activities.

Strong Communicator and Results Oriented: Develop effective communication strategies and produce materials (e.g., policy reports and memos, case studies, op-eds, petitions, and sign-on letters) to advance policies that promote climate and land justice.

Collaborative Team Member: Collaborate with our hard-hitting team to lead Friends of the Earth’s policy work related to deforestation, land use and climate change. This includes policy engagement efforts at state and federal levels and relevant U.S. government agencies (e.g., US Treasury, State Department). Partner with allies globally to advocate for private finance shifts and strong implementation of rights-oriented climate and land use policies among key agribusiness, consumer goods and financial sector companies, and at standard setting bodies.

Required Qualifications:
• At least six (6) years of experience in a similar or related role including unpaid, grassroots or lived experience, and demonstrated success in policy advocacy, research, and organizing, with a minimum of two (2) years of demonstrated experience in policy advocacy (public policy and/or with the private sector).
• A passion for action on climate change, a commitment to social justice, and a sophisticated understanding of the links between land use, deforestation, climate, and human rights.
• Excellent analytical, decision-making, team building, time management, prioritization and networking skills, flexibility, and creativity. Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to inspire trust and respect among your peers.
• Ability to balance and successfully complete a wide range of campaign activities including advocacy, public speaking, policy development, research, and communications.
• Demonstrated oral and written communication skills and comfort with presenting material to a wide range of audiences, including the public, the press, businesses, and government officials.
• In depth understanding of the intersection between land, food and climate, the connection of food justice to racial justice, and the benefits of agroecological farming systems.
• Ability to travel frequently to Washington DC (if not based in DC) and other locations as needed (Once Covid restrictions are lifted).
• Skilled in Microsoft Word, Excel, Office, and basic Microsoft programs.
• All candidates must be authorized to work in the United States. FoE does not sponsor any employment related visas.

Preferred Qualifications:
• A Master’s degree in political science, agriculture, food systems, environmental science, public policy, international affairs, or related field.
• Experience working in U.S. based and international organizing and movement spaces. We value lived experience and social commitment lived or from the grassroots.
• Experience working on issues of racial, economic, and/or worker justice.
• Proven project management skills including proficiency in managing budgets, delivering on timelines, coordinating plans across partners and allies.
• An understanding of international financial institutions and global agricultural supply chains (deforestation, land grabbing, regenerative agriculture).
• Familiarity with ESG strategies for investors and financial institutions.
• Fluency in Spanish and/or Portuguese or Bahasa Indonesia.

FOE envisions a world where we live within the ability of the planet to sustain life, and in which all people live with dignity, health and equity. We believe that both environmental crises, as well as widespread social injustice, are intertwined symptoms of flawed ideological, economic and political systems that are violating peoples’ rights, perpetuating oppression, failing to meet the needs of people, and destroying the planet.

We believe that increasing racial diversity within environmental organizations is critical to the future success of our movement. Our Fellowship program is designed to increase the long-term effectiveness of FOE and the environmental movement by operating an inspiring and fulfilling fellowship program that builds skills and relevant job experience for people of color and members of underrepresented communities.

Arlie W. Schardt was a pioneering voice for the environment and witness to some of the most seminal events in American history as a Time magazine correspondent traveling with Martin Luther King while covering the civil rights movement. Throughout his peripatetic 50-year career, Schardt reported on and acted on behalf of social justice. Al Gore states, “Through his remarkably diverse career, Arlie Schardt lived a life of purpose and impact,” said the former Vice President. “He was a champion for civil rights and an early pioneer of the environmental movement. I valued greatly his commitment to public service and will always be grateful for the invaluable roles he played on my Presidential campaign.” Schardt joined Friends of the Earth (FOE), serving as Chairman of the Board from 2009 until June 2019 when he was named chair emeritus in honor of his service. According to Erich Pica, president of FOE, “Arlie was instrumental in tripling the size of the organization and broadening its mandate to combine his concerns for social and racial justice with environmentalism.”

About the Fellowship:

Each year, we welcome a cohort of five Fellows to work with us full-time for six months. This year the Fellowship program will be a remote position, with the possibility of an in-person retreat in the DC office if/when the offices re-open. Fellows are paid $20/hour and will receive a one-time stipend of $1,000.

Fellows are placed with our Communications, Economic Policy, Food & Agriculture, Climate & Energy, or Program teams. In addition to substantive work with the teams, the Fellowship program also includes networking and career development opportunities.

The fellowship begins in March 2023 and ends in September 2023.

About our Climate and Energy Justice Team and Fellowship Position:

The climate crisis is the definitive environmental issue of our time, but it will take more than just greenhouse gas-reducing technologies to address it.

The Climate & Energy Justice Team envisions energy systems that are ecologically balanced, centered on community self-determination, and that recognize and address systemic inequity. We seek to stop the exploitation of people and the environment by halting dirty energy production; ending fossil fuel subsidies; supporting a planned phase-out of fossil fuels; protecting public lands; and preventing climate disinformation.

Recognizing that there can be no climate justice without racial justice, we support energy systems that advance environmental justice, foster equitable relationships among and within nations, and secure clean energy access for all.

The fellow will become an integral member of our dynamic Climate and Energy Justice Team and gain valuable skills and experience in research, strategic campaign development, online and traditional media communications, corporate and non-profit engagement, and public outreach, education and organizing on the cutting edge of environmental advocacy.

The Fellow will work with the team in implementing environmental and climate justice campaigns relevant to the mission of Friends of the Earth. Work within the Fellowship will focus on campaigns that engage impacted communities and organizations and FOE members in local, regional, and statewide environmental and climate justice issues and challenges.

This position will introduce the fellow to a wide range of colleagues in environmental, social justice and legislative arenas. The fellow will work in government, corporate and non-profit circles and has the opportunity to become familiar with how these different entities work.

About our Economic Policy Team and Fellowship Position:

The Economic Policy program aims to create a more environmentally sustainable and socially just world by transforming financial and economic systems. We work with allies around the world to redirect public spending to make polluters pay for the costs of their pollution, and to drive the transition to a cleaner, low-carbon economy. At home and abroad, we advocate for policies that minimize environmental and social harm and fund a brighter future. The fellow will help track government-backed institutions that fund energy projects overseas. Second, the fellow will support the implementation of the senior international finance campaigner’s strategic plans related to international financing (e.g., International Monetary Fund, World Bank, development finance institutions) in conjunction with the International Finance Program Manager. Third, the fellow will conduct research and analysis to develop reports and articles, factsheets, and other campaign materials to educate decision makers, allies, opinion leaders, the press, and the public. Finally, the fellow will engage with Congressional allies, agency officials, and domestic and international coalitions.

About our Democracy Team Fellowship Position:

The Democracy Fellowship at Friends of the Earth will provide the opportunity to dive deep into the process of creating equitable, intersectional, and visionary policy at the state level. Working to embolden the connection between environment and democracy, our fellow will work together with partner organizations to advance the implementation of an Independent Redistricting Commission in North Carolina.

There will be multi-faceted learning environments including direct lobbying, training facilitation, and hosting coalition events. Direct training on how to draw communities of interest with mapping software, lobbying elected officials, and organizing fundamentals will be provided. Opportunities for cross pollination include providing testimony in public hearings, planning a lobby day, and producing a report that will be used as an advocacy tool. There will be consistent and meaningful exposure to partner organizations in the state of North Carolina which will create the opportunity to build lasting relationships in the non-profit and political sectors.

The Political Department works closely with all of Friends of the Earth’s Program Teams (Climate & Energy, Food & Agriculture, Oceans & Vessels, and Economic Policy) to advance progressive and transformational federal environmental policy. The Legislative and Political fellow will have opportunities to lobby Congress and the Administration, build and maintain relationships with Congressional and federal agency staff, and network with other environmental advocates. The fellow is expected to conduct research, draft advocacy materials, and provide additional support to the Programs, Communications and Development Departments, as needed.

FOE works on a dynamic set of intersectional issues knowing that we cannot build a healthy and just world without addressing the interconnectedness of society’s injustices. FOE not only fights for laws and lawmakers that will echo that mission, but it helps the public join in the political battle as well. FOE believes that unprecedented political action from across the nation will put the United States, and hopefully our planet, on a sustainable path.

Our Democracy Fellow will assist in advancing the campaign to establish an Independent Redistricting Commission in North Carolina by securing legislative endorsements, conducting outreach to partner organizations, and authoring a research project that will assist in the advancement of the campaign.

About our Food and Agriculture Team and Fellowship Position:

The Food and Agriculture program works to rapidly transition our food system to one that is regenerative, healthy, and just. Our fellow will assist our Emerging Technology in Agriculture campaign, which works to transform public policy to establish appropriate safety assessment and oversight of GMO agriculture products such as GMO crops, insects, soil, and animals; and to keep poorly regulated GMOs out of our food system. We work to advance regenerative organic and agroecological farming systems that are inherently healthier and that pose fewer risks for people, pollinators, animals, and the planet. The fellow will assist in conducting grassroots and stakeholder outreach to support our state, federal, and international policy work, help coordinate and participate in meeting and event logistics, conduct research to support public policy campaigns, and draft public outreach materials.

The fellow will become an integral member of our dynamic Food and Agriculture Team and gain valuable skills and experience in research, strategic campaign development, online and traditional media communications, corporate and non-profit engagement, and public outreach, education and organizing on the cutting edge of environmental advocacy.

This position will introduce the fellow to a wide range of colleagues in environmental, social justice and regulatory arenas. The fellow will work in community based, corporate and non-profit circles and can become familiar with how these different entities work.

Our Food and Agriculture Program works to rapidly transition our food system to one that is regenerative, healthy, and just. We seek three fundamental shifts in our food system: from industrial and chemical-intensive to ecologically regenerative; from corporate-controlled to democratically governed; and from a system that embodies the deepest inequities in our society to one that advances social justice and fulfills the needs of all eaters now and into the future. We achieve success through a systems-based approach that weaves together market change and policy advocacy supported by intersectional organizing, cutting-edge science, and strategic communications.
What We Look For: Are you passionate about ending factory farming? Do you want to lead a campaign to advance federal policies that hold industrial meat and dairy operations accountable for their harms to communities and the environment? Are you skilled at designing and implementing strategic, cutting-edge policy advocacy campaigns? Can you work effectively in coalition and uplift the voices and perspectives of communities impacted by factory farms? Do you have a knack for cultivating strong relationships with Capitol Hill and relevant federal agency officials?
If so, this is the position for you. We want you to succeed and we pay a competitive wage that is in line with your experience. The salary range for this full-time remote (Washington, DC area) or DC office role is $81,000-$91,000. Offers are determined based on relevant skills and experience required for the position.

Supervise and manage interns and consultants as needed and at some point, junior staff.
Relationship Builder: Cultivate strong and enduring relationships with Capitol Hill offices and relevant agency officials, lobbying them in support of legislative and regulatory priorities. Help to build and lead coalition efforts to shape and advance our campaigns, with a focus on engaging with organizations that represent populations impacted by factory farming and the expansion of factory farm gas.
Results Oriented: Design and implement strategic campaign plans in conjunction with the Climate-Friendly Food team. Track, monitor, analyze, and report on federal legislation and regulations pertaining to priority issues. Develop and demonstrate expertise on regulatory oversight and subsidies for factory farms, with a focus on curbing policy support for factory farm gas (biogas). Conduct research and develop reports, op-eds, briefs, factsheets, web content, and other campaign materials to educate allies, opinion leaders, policymakers, the press, and the public. Organize events and meetings such as webinars, policy briefings, and fly-ins.
Collaborative Communicator: Work with our communications department to advance campaign objectives via traditional and social media, including developing relationships with reporters, press monitoring, and drafting press releases and social media content. Represent Friends of the Earth in media interviews, conferences, at public events and in legislative and federal agency meetings and briefings to support campaign objectives and reach key audiences. Work with the Food and Agriculture team and the Development department to support fundraising, including contributing to foundation proposals and membership materials and cultivating relationships with donors and foundations.
