Responsibilities include identifying, transcribing, and publishing primary documents; assisting with EV's editorial workflow; and project... promotion and outreach. The Assistant Editor will report to the Managing Editor of EV and collaborate with the rest of the EV staff to better tell an inclusive story of Virginia for students, teachers, and communities who seek to understand how the past informs the present and the future.

The Assistant Editor helps to select and digitize primary resources; transcribes and proofreads those resources against original or other materials; acquires digital facsimiles of those originals, when possible, to complement the transcriptions; writes descriptive and contextual summaries of each primary resource; and manages the workflow of each resource from its selection to its publication online. This position will also be responsible for converting EV entries into a format compatible for online publication, which includes categorizing and adding reference links and timelines.

The Assistant Editor conducts outreach with Virginia's K-12 educational community and other cultural organization partners. Outreach and promotional activities include social media content creation, and engaging these audiences in exploring ways that EV might better meet their needs. Where possible, the Assistant Editor will support the work of Virginia Humanities' Director of Education to create learning resources related to EV content to be published on Virginia Humanities' education site. The Assistant Editor will design and implement assessment methods to measure the impact of the engagement efforts described above.

Virginia Humanities, which produces Encyclopedia Virginia, offers a dynamic work environment and a wide array of programming: the Virginia Festival of the Book, the weekly public radio show With Good Reason, international fellowships, among other programs.

Qualified candidates must have a bachelor's degree in English, History, or a related field with at least three years of experience.

Anticipated Hiring Range: $54,000 - $58,000 commensurate with education and experience

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.

This position is located in Charlottesville, VA.
