The Dog Training Apprentice position is a combination of a store partner role while completing the Dog Training Instructor Program (DTIP) to become a Petco certified Positive Dog Trainer. As the Dog Training Apprentice, you must follow Petco’s Positive Dog Training curriculums and methodologies. What you'll do:
Provide pet parents with exceptional dog training instruction and customer service by acting as a subject matter expert for Petco’s Positive Dog Training Program products, services and in-store promotions, to our canine pet friends and their pet parents, helping them strengthen their bond through fun and educational training. A Dog Training Apprentice will be a resource in the store regarding Petco’s Positive Dog Training Program and assist in the achievement of the store’s budgeted sales goals by driving sales, while educating and engaging all store partners.

- Performs all aspects of point-of-sale service, e.g. cash sales, credit and check sales, returns and exchanges. Performs the daily balance of cash drawer as necessary.
- Completes cash register transactions as well as guest carry-out service consisting of merchandise weighing up to but not exceeding 50 pounds per trip.

Work Environment:
The majority of job duties are conducted indoors, although merchandise stocking and customer carry-outs will require that an associate leave the store briefly. Position requires bending, kneeling, lifting (up to 50 pounds, as necessary) and standing for long periods of time. The large majority of this associate’s time will be spent in direct contact with our customers and their dogs. During Dog Training Instructor Program travel to mentor store may be required.

Summary:

Launched in March 2013, the ASPCA Behavioral Rehabilitation Center at St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center in Madison, New Jersey, is the first and only facility dedicated to the study and rehabilitation of extremely fearful, undersocialized dogs, such as those confiscated from puppy mills and hoarding situations. In 2017, the ASPCA Behavioral Rehabilitation Center (BRC) will expand and relocate to a new permanent facility in Weaverville, North Carolina.

This key role at the BRC includes providing daily care, cleaning and enrichment for the animals in treatment at our new facility in Asheville, NC. The goal of the Rehab Center is to provide behavioral interventions for dogs who are so behaviorally compromised that they suffer from a poor quality of life and cannot be placed in a home without rehabilitation. Critical to their success at the BRC is their ability to stay healthy while in the facility. The role... of the Care and Enrichment staff is to keep the dog runs and exercise areas clean and disinfected with daily cleaning and spot cleaning throughout the day, clean, prepare and provide daily enrichment items to keep dogs engaged and reduce stress, assist with playgroups and monitor interactions and behavior, assist the behavior staff with specific parts of the interventions, and learn and bring to the attention of the vet tech any concerns for illness. This role may also include local animal transport. This position is based in Weaverville, near Asheville, NC, and will report to the Animal Care and Enrichment Manager. There will be no direct reports.

Responsibilities:

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

Direct Animal Care (80%):
• Provide daily care and support for the dogs in treatment, adhering to the BRC standard operating procedures and low stress handling and approach.
• Monitor and help maintain the medical and behavioral health of shelter animals; ensure adherence to nutrition, sanitation and infectious disease-prevention protocols established by the ASPCA’s Shelter Medicine Services team and BRC Veterinarian.
• Support the behavioral growth of the dogs in treatment, in coordination with the Behavior Branch and treatment paradigms of the program.
• Ensure the comfort and cleanliness of shelter animals.
• Comply with specific feeding programs related to behavioral enrichment for specific animals.
• Assist the Veterinary Support Coordinator as requested.
• Take inventory and stock supplies as needed.
• Do laundry as needed.
• Drive an ASPCA vehicle to transport animals when needed.
• Maintain the cleanliness of the animal transport vehicles.
• Work to integrate volunteers into daily care, setting clear expectations, providing guidance as needed and always communicating respect and gratitude for volunteer support

Enrichment/Interventions (20%):
• Follow guidelines to ensure that animal holding areas include appropriate music and/or auditory stimulation for shelter animals.
• Provide daily written behavioral and medical observations to inform and share across branches (teams).
• Exercise/socialize animals as instructed and manage play groups as directed by behavior team
• Prepare and distribute enrichment as directed; being open to specific needs based on treatment status or special needs.
• Assist as requested and directed in behavior interventions as “novel person”.

Animal Care Duties

Kennel techs will provide direct, hands-on care for the dogs in our facility. The kennel tech team is responsible for cleaning cages and kennels, feeding dogs, administering meds, and walking dogs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Properly clean and disinfect kennels.
• Properly feed and provide water to dogs as instructed.
• Notify animal care supervisors of noted medical needs.
• Safely and properly handle all dogs, according to CCM standards of care
• Transport sick or injured dogs to offsite veterinarians as needed.
• Other tasks as assigned.

Desired Skills:
• Animal Care - Knowledge of general animal care principles and practices. Ability to appropriately interact with dogs
• Good Communication Skills - Excellent customer service, good oral and written communication skills with coworkers, volunteers and program participants, delivered with compassion, honesty and integrity.
• Endurance - Stand for extended periods (8 hours a day), bend and reach to perform assigned work activities, and lift and carry 50 lbs. without assistance.
• Comprehension - Understand and follow a variety of oral and written instructions and procedures.
• Attention to Detail: Ability to observe and properly communicate needs of dogs to appropriate supervisor

Qualifications/Educational Background:
• Minimum of high school diploma or equivalent preferred
• One+ years’ experience in animal related field preferred.
• Scheduling flexibility, to include availability to work one or more weekend days, and some holidays
• Willing to submit to drug screening as requested
• Must have reliable transportation
• Must love dogs!

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: From $12.00 per hour

Schedule:
• 4 hour shift
• 8 hour shift
