What you’ll do as HR Services and Transitions Center Counselor:

Required Qualifications

The Director of Strategic Business Operations of the Cornell Atkinson Center for Sustainability serves as a strategic, practical, and results-driven leader in partnership with the director. Serves as the director of operations and the strategic finance director of the center, and also serves as head of staff development as the center’s liaison with Research Division Human Resources. Oversees all aspects of the center’s day-to-day operations, including research grants and other programs, finance, budget, information systems, human resources, and facilities, maintaining a high functioning organization and a culture of continuous improvement. Advises and partners with the Director to implement the center’s strategic plan.

The successful candidate will have strong people leadership skills, with an approachable style, excellent intuition and judgment, supervisory, managerial, organizational, analytical, and creative problem-solving skills. The ability to attract and recruit top talent, motivate the team, delegate effectively, celebrate diversity within the team, and manage performance; widely viewed as a strong developer of others.

Extensive experience in the management of complex projects, contracts or grants, including reporting, budgeting, trend forecasting trends and long-range strategic planning. Experience and success in leading and delegating to a diverse group of colleagues working in a collaborative, team-based environment.

In executing the center’s strategic plan, and while directing the center’s business and operations team, provides empathetic leadership and guidance to fellow staff directors to ensure shared vision, effective collaboration and alignment across the center’s other teams: Communications, Development, Strategic Partnerships and Student & Postdoc Programs. Develops, directs, and interprets the center’s program policies and procedures including financial and grant management, human resources and facilities, creating and regularly updating Standard Operating Procedure documents for internal use at Cornell Atkinson. Plays a leadership role in development of new programs, implementation of innovative and effective interdisciplinary program management, and facilitation of changes in university systems, policies, and procedures in support of cross college interdisciplinary programs.

Provides leadership for organizational development and staff development, working with the relevant offices of the Research Division and Cornell HR for regular 360 reviews, DiSC (or other performance and communication enhancing) surveys, and other opportunities for professional development training.

Oversees the preparation of the center’s annual budget. Provides financial reports and analysis, including long range forecast and trend reports; proactively manage budgets. Compiles comprehensive program and project reports in collaboration with fellow directors for a range of audiences including external sponsors, donors, the Cornell Atkinson advisory council, and the administrative leadership at Cornell.

Effectively communicates and collaborates with colleagues in the research division, office of legal counsel, deans’ offices, departmental offices, and other university offices to proactively support the center in furthering its mission. Creates and maintains a professional and productive working environment that is supportive and inclusive for a diverse workforce. Directly supervises and mentors the center’s operations team which is responsible for the center’s research programs, grant management, financial transactions, budgeting, data analysis and reporting.

The Associate Dean of Students and Director of Latinx Student Empowerment is a member of the senior staff of the Office of the Dean of Students (DOS) and reports directly to the Senior Associate Dean of Students for Diversity & Inclusion portfolio. This role advocates and provides vision, leadership, and coordination for Latinx-identified strategic priorities and initiatives within the Division of Student and Campus Life on Cornell University’s campus of 24,000 students. They advise several student organizations and implement intercultural and intersectional longitudinal co-curricular programs open to all students. Additionally, this role serves as a network of support for Latinx students who live on-campus, especially those who reside in the Latino Living Center (LLC). In collaboration with staff and partners across campus, the Associate Dean of Students helps identify and mitigate the challenges that Latinx students and students from underserved communities may face in their transition to and navigation of Cornell. As a leader in the D & I portfolio of the Dean of Student’s Office, this position regularly participates in collaborative programming and training efforts, particularly in campus-wide efforts promoting student mental health and well-being. This position also serves as an Administrator On-Call and responds to crisis-related situations after-hours as needed.
