News/Sports/Weather...

The newsroom offers opportunities to learn the skills needed for: Newscast writing & producing, video editing, news and sports reporting, special projects, social media and the assignment desk. All newsroom interns are required to take part in an end of the semester “mock” newscast written and produced by interns.

Digital

Coverage on our digital platforms is increasingly more and more important to reach audiences, no matter the department. This position works with the Click2Houston digital team in the newsroom to develop skills in digital journalism, content creation, audience engagement on social media and more.

About the Program

The internship program is a paid program intended to augment the educational development of those studying for careers in broadcasting. The internship opportunities are structured with appropriate supervision, evaluation and feedback for students enrolled in institutions of higher learning.

All students considered for the internship program will need to meet certain academic standards and should be highly motivated to learn and make solid contributions to the television industry. The criteria for selecting interns are as follows:
• Students must be at least 18 years of age.
• Students must be enrolled in an accredited college or university and classified as at least a sophomore status when the internship begins.
• Students must be majoring in some field having relationship to broadcasting or a station’s operations.
• Students must be eligible to earn academic course credit or their equivalent (such as Master’s Thesis) for the internship. Proof of course credit must be submitted prior to consideration.
• Interns are required to work a minimum of 20 hours per week to receive this credit.

Internships are offered during the spring, summer and fall semesters. The spring and fall semesters last four months and the summer lasts two months.

Interested candidates must send a resume with a cover letter stating the department of interest (pick one, news, sports or weather) and the days and hours available for work. Also required is a letter from the Internship Coordinator/ Advisor or Dean of your college/university confirming that academic course credit is being received for the internship participation and the total number of hours required.

REQUIREMENTS:

Minimum 5 years-experience in line producing live television.

Five or more years of experience working on a daily, live program on TV.

Minimum 2 years-experience field producing or live field reporting.

Previous management, large market, or network-level experience preferred.

Strong ability to write and edit copy and video.

Must be comfortable meeting all booked guests and “prepping” them and the co-hosts for each segment.

Prior knowledge of automated production systems a plus.

Familiarity with iNews desired.

Excellent organizational and leadership skills.

Ability to take direction working in a fast-paced environment and under tight deadlines.

Ability to lift props and scenery.

The role: FULL-TIME Co-host/Reporter for KPRC2s Local Programming department including Houston Life, plus the on-air, digital and streaming platforms associated within the department. HOUSTON LIFE is our live, daily, one-hour afternoon talk-show/lifestyle program. It airs four-times a day on KPRC 2 and KPRC2+.

You will also serve as a KPRC2 representative at community events and help to build an audience for KPRC2 and its multiple media platforms.

The ideal candidate: will be highly motivated, organized, and have a successful track record of pitching, producing, shooting, editing and writing stories under management guidance, under tight deadlines. Strong adlibbing skills are essential. We are a team on and off camera. We work hard and laugh even harder.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
• Follow a story from pitch to completion. Writes and edits copy for on-air, web site, social media and promotional use. Shoot and edit video.
• Appears on a live, daily talk show (scripted and unscripted segments) conducting live or taped interviews/segments/bits.
• While the ability to read from a teleprompter is essential, you will co-host multiple hours of unscripted programming, therefore, strong adlibbing skills are essential.
• Create content on HoustonLife.tv to correspond with daily story.
• Promote stories on social media before, during and after air of broadcast.
• Works with associate producers, producers, directors, video journalists, co-host and interns.
• Works with KPRC2 Sales and Marketing Departments to secure and deliver quality/entertaining segments which are sponsored.
• Helps local programming department to develop long-term coverage ideas for the station, including special segments within Houston Life, for linear broadcast and digital platforms.
• Represents the station at events throughout the year.
• Familiarity with iNews a plus.
• Typical work schedule is FULL-TIME, M-F 9am 5pm. However, there are some station initiatives and community events that would require for you to work occasional nights and/or weekends.
REQUIREMENTS:
• Minimum 5 years live on-air experience.
• Minimum 3-4 years experience shooting, writing, editing material for broadcast.
• Ability to work under very tight deadlines.
• Effective internal and external communication skills.
• Expert in current and emerging social media platforms.
• Understand KPRC2s presence in the community and the core values associated with our brand.
