The Brennan Center for Justice is seeking two Research Associates, one for our Justice Program and one for our Elections and Government Program.

Note: This is a hybrid position. Staff are currently working remotely 2 days a week. This position is based in New York City.

The Justice Program aims to secure our nation’s promise of “equal justice for all” by tackling racial disparities and economic injustice, promoting a dignity-centered approach to crime and punishment, and creating a rational, effective, and fair justice system. Its priority focus is to reform the criminal legal system to shrink reliance on mass incarceration and mitigate its pernicious effects.

The Elections and Government Program works to improve the administration of our elections so that they are free, fair, and accessible for all voters; reduce the undue influence of private wealth, and amplify the voices of everyday people, in politics; and combat election disinformation and political violence that often disproportionately harm people of color and other political minorities, among other goals. This work aims to bring the ideal of representative self-government closer to reality by eliminating barriers to full and equal political participation, countering racial and other discrimination in our electoral and political systems, and striving to ensure that public policy and institutions represent and reflect the diverse voices and interests that make for a rich democracy.

Responsibilities

Shared Among Programs: Both Research roles will assist with conducting research, data analysis using statistical programs (Such as R, Stata or GIS), drafting, editing, and assisting with the rollout of publications, reports, opinion pieces, academic journal articles, and other publications or communications as needed. Providing administrative, logistical, and/or project management support to research supervisors and attorneys. Additionally, taking on special projects and other duties as assigned.

Justice Program – The Research Associate will conduct research and policy advocacy for Justice Program initiatives. Some projects in the near term will include: a mixed methods study examining racial inequities in misdemeanor enforcement, and the development of recommendations with the engagement of impacted communities; and research to understand trends, root causes, and structural solutions related to crime, alternatives to enforcement in the form of policing, prosecution, and incarceration; and prison reform.

Qualifications

Shared Among Programs: A bachelor’s degree is the minimum education requirement, but candidates with a master’s degree will be given full consideration. Two years of applied data and research experience (undergraduate or post-graduate) is preferred. This position also requires specific technical skills, including working knowledge of a command-line program (preferably R or Stata), familiarity with Excel, and basic data cleaning skills. Strong ability to efficiently manage time, ensure attention to detail and accuracy, and communicate clearly in writing and verbally with cross-functional teams is required. While not required, familiarity with the fields of U.S. democracy, elections, politics, demography, and/or civil rights is a plus. Our research centers issues of equity with respect to race, gender, sexual orientation, class, and other sociopolitical factors; comfort with equity as a driving principle of research is essential to success in the role.

Justice Program

· One year of applied data and research experience (undergraduate or graduate) is required.

· Working knowledge of at least one data processing program is required (e.g., R, Stata, or GIS are preferred, but other programs are accepted).

· Experience in conducting quantitative and qualitative research, including statistical analysis, is preferred.

· Strong writing skills required.

· Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, self-reliance, and strong work ethic are required.

· Mixed-methods experience, lived experience, participatory research, sociology, demography, public health, public policy, criminology, or statistics are a plus.

Election & Government Program:

Position: The Justice Program is seeking a full-time Research Associate (RA) to join a cutting edge inter-disciplinary team working to create innovative, data-driven solutions to end mass incarceration and support new, holistic solutions to public safety that put communities first. The Research Associate will conduct research and policy advocacy for Justice Program initiatives. Some projects in the near term will include: a mixed methods study examining racial inequities in misdemeanor enforcement, and the development of recommendations with the engagement of impacted communities; and research to understand trends, root causes, and structural solutions related to crime, alternatives to enforcement in the form of policing, prosecution, and incarceration; and prison reform.

The Research Associate will support the work of researchers and program staff including attorneys.

Responsibilities:
• Conducting quantitative research and data analysis, under the instruction and mentorship of the research supervisor. This includes locating, collecting, and cleaning data related to the criminal legal system; managing large datasets documentation; analyzing data using statistical programs (such as R, Stata, or GIS); and helping draft and refine research findings and methodologies for reports and public forums.
• Providing qualitative support to research supervisors by, for example, helping develop protocols; conducting or co-facilitating interviews and focus groups; analyzing qualitative data; and helping draft and refine research findings and methodologies for reports and public forums.

Over the past several years, the Brennan Center has significantly expanded its capacity to develop and execute original research projects to further the organization’s program goals. Our growing cohort of research professionals includes four Ph.D.- or Masters’-level Research Fellows, two Research Associates, and a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow, embedded in various program teams. Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Vice President for Program Initiatives, the Director of Research will be responsible for overseeing methodologies for all Brennan Center research projects based in the social and data sciences to ensure quality and rigor at every step of the process. The Director will help program leaders execute their research agenda, maintaining a “dotted line” supervisory relationship to program-based researchers through a system of matrix management. A successful candidate will foster a collaborative work environment, working in close cooperation with the relevant program managers to oversee the research process. The Director will also be tasked with building a research department. Responsibilities for the position include:
• Supporting research professionals and their supervisors at key stages of the process to help guide and shape research projects – from inception through design, refinement, testing, and publication – to ensure that published research meets widely accepted standards of originality, reliability, and ethics in the given discipline.
• Reviewing and advising on the methodology of all data-driven research projects, papers, and studies.
• Providing technical assistance and support to program staff and managers.
• Developing and supervising the organization’s peer review processes.
• Building and leading a core research department that builds the Brennan Center’s capacity in data science, enhances our research output, manages centralized resources, maintains the organization’s research agenda, and ensures the security of our data. This core team will include associates and support staff as needed to assist in the performance of these tasks. The Director will also have the opportunity to build a team of research professionals assigned to work on projects conceived and supervised by the Director.
• Supporting the community of Brennan Center research professionals by hosting regular team meetings and workshops and by making sure they have appropriate opportunities to showcase their work before internal and external audiences.
• Helping to develop and retain talent through ongoing mentoring, training, and assistance with professional development.
• Managing relationships with relevant external organizations (including Institutional Review Boards) to facilitate the approval, conduct, deployment, and review of research projects.

Qualifications:
• A Ph.D. in social science, public policy, law and society, or related interdisciplinary field and at least ten years of full-time applied social sciences research experience, including staff management, publications, data analysis, and/or leading research.
• Significant experience and expertise in developing and leading applied mixed methods research in the democracy field or other public policy field (e.g., sociology, criminology, demography, public health, etc.).
• Strong publication track record in scholarly journals, books, and/or reports.
• Strong fluency with data science techniques, and advanced experience using R, Stata, SPSS, or another comparable data analysis program. Advanced knowledge of Excel.
• Fluency with qualitative methods and approaches, including genuine engagement with impacted communities.
• Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy in all work that could be used or published, with proven ability to plan for and demonstrate peer review and other techniques for bulletproofing findings.
• Demonstrated commitment to social justice and understanding of how to engage in research through an equity approach that can address structural inequities across race, gender, class, sexual orientation, etc.
• Strong management skills.
• Excellent interpersonal skills, including proven ability to work effectively with program leaders and key expert stakeholders, and to work collaboratively with editors, other staff, and outside peer reviewers to support program goals.
