Summary

The Digital Copy Editor is responsible for editing and fact-checking copy for both BloodHorse.com and our digital news product, BloodHorse Daily. They may occasionally be requested to assist with BloodHorse Magazine on a fill-in basis. This role requires strict attention to detail, an ability to move efficiently through copy on deadline in a timely manner, and an unflagging dedication to accuracy.

The Digital Copy Editor maintains a flexible schedule and a willingness to see BloodHorse Daily through to publication each night. The position requires a mix of first- and second-shift availability. The days you work second shift generally require a start time of around 1:00-1:30 p.m. ET, with the shift typically lasting until around 9:00 p.m.-10:00 p.m. ET. A later shift is sometimes required depending on Thoroughbred industry events like sales, night races, or late-breaking news.

Duties and Responsibilities
• The copy editor will ensure that text is correct in terms of factual data, spelling, grammar, punctuation, terminology, semantics, and formatting, following the guidelines of the BloodHorse style guide and AP style. They will ensure that the idea the writer wishes to portray is clear and easy to understand.
• The copy editor will check each piece of writing to make sure it is sensible, fair, and well-executed. They may also be required to change the length of the text in order to meet word counts for design purposes.
• The copy editor is also responsible for adding headlines, sub headers, footnotes, and photo captions as necessary.
• The copy editor may be required to assist in adding press releases and other digital content to the content management system.

Requirements

· BA/BS or equivalent experience

· Experience in copy editing/journalism

· Proficient in Microsoft Office suite and Google Docs/Sheets

· Excellent time management and communication skills

· Ability to work under pressure and multi-task

· Flexible schedule and willingness to tackle late nights while maintaining quality performance

· Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to details

Preference will be given to those with knowledge of the Thoroughbred breeding, sales, and racing industries.

Preference will be given to candidates that reside in Kentucky. The option to work remote may be available after initial training.

SUMMARY OF THE ASSISTANT NEWS EDITOR OPPORTUNITY

The assistant news editor will write articles on various aspects of the Thoroughbred racing, breeding, and sales industries, including race previews, recaps, and features for BloodHorse.com, BloodHorse Daily, and BloodHorse Magazine. In addition, the assistant news editor will be responsible for providing news coverage of Thoroughbred racing, breeding, and sales, while coordinating with fellow BloodHorse staff members and freelancers.

The assistant news editor will work with the BloodHorse.com news editor on editorial production of the website. The assistant news editor will further spearhead production of the industry-leading BloodHorse Daily newsletter multiple times per week.

Besides writing and editing, BloodHorse Daily production responsibilities include:

· Planning a schedule of articles to appear in BloodHorse Daily, gauging placement based on news value and other considerations.

· Reading BloodHorse stories for accuracy, clarity, and proper grammar.

· Finding engaging photos for each article, writing cutlines according to style, and accurately recording photo usage.

· Troubleshooting issues that may arise while production is ongoing that may pertain to layout, design, or advertising.

Additional responsibilities include:

· Coordinating with team members to continually improve product quality and increase engagement in BloodHorse platforms and products.

· Writing original copy, while also posting and editing industry releases.

· Conducting interviews with sources, high-profile industry members, and government leaders.

· Establishing relationships with key industry figures; attending racetrack and other equine events for editorial coverage.

· Attending or assisting in coverage of special events, such as the Triple Crown, the Breeders’ Cup, and major horse sales.

· Analyzing pedigrees and race records of horses in races and sales.

· Regularly promoting BloodHorse content on social media, providing news and human interest information on Twitter and/or other platforms.

· Keeping website and social media platforms current.

· Writing stakes, regional reports, and features for BloodHorse magazine.

· Recording videos and interviews for online distribution on BloodHorse+.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

· Ability to meet deadlines, cover news, and communicate well with industry participants and BloodHorse team members.

· Have strong written and verbal communication skills and a proficient knowledge of grammar and AP style, plus the ability to produce clear, thorough, and clean copy quickly.

· Know how to cultivate sources within the industry and how to collect information through interviews and online records.

· Strong attention to detail, plus organization skills and creativity.

· Must be comfortable working under pressure and on tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment while juggling multiple assignments.

· Be self-motivated, but also a team player with excellent interpersonal skills, able to work alone and cooperatively with editors and other writers as needed.

· Accept and complete assignments cooperatively with a “can do” attitude.

· Have the ability to make 11th-hour decisions regarding breaking news and must possess good news judgment. Must understand the urgency in handling breaking news and the appropriate ranking of major and minor news stories.

· Help ensure BloodHorse content is of highest quality.

· Participate in social media outreach, including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

· Possesses journalism experience and/or a journalism degree.

· Brings a passion for writing, hard work, and horse racing.

· Knows the equine industry, such as how to read past performances and race charts, plus understands horse racing terminology. (A furlong is what distance? A juvenile is what age?)

· Approaches work with a desire to be a little more efficient, a little more creative, a little bit better of a writer and editor, than the day before.
