Job Introduction...

Almost everyone in the UK uses the BBC: in fact, in 2020/21, UK adults spent on average over 18 hours a week with us. We’re here to inform, educate and entertain, and we’re doing more of that online than ever: over the year, iPlayer saw 6.1 billion requests to stream programs, and BBC Sounds served 1.3 billion UK plays of radio, music and podcasts.

Media Services is the engine that powers those streams: our suite of cloud-hosted microservices prepares, transcodes, packages and delivers audio and video for BBC iPlayer, Sounds, News, Sport, Weather and Bitesize. We also provide the web and mobile player APIs for those services. Our software is the gateway to BBC content for millions of users.

We’re looking for a methodical, inquisitive and motivated Software Engineer in Test to join our Agile teams.

Main Responsibilities

This is your opportunity to:

· Play a leading role in creating and maintaining automated tests

· Carry out manual testing on new features and fixes

· Bring a tester’s perspective to refinement of stories

· Promote a culture of quality across the development team

· Contribute to continuous improvement of our ways of working

Are you the right candidate?

You’ll be highly technical and a strong coder — ideally in Ruby, but experience in other languages is relevant. We’re also looking for:

· Proven skill in testing APIs or back-end software

· Familiarity with AWS or other cloud ecosystems

· Ability to troubleshoot problems in a complex system

· Experience testing workflows that use message queues like Amazon SQS

· A flair for finding subtle bugs through effective exploratory testing

· Familiarity with video and audio streaming technologies

If this sounds like you, and you’d like to help build the future of streaming with a globally renowned broadcaster, we would love to hear from you.

We’re happy to discuss flexible working. Please indicate your choice under the flexible working question in the application. There is no obligation to raise this at the application stage but if you wish to do so, you are welcome to. Flexible working will be part of the discussion at offer stage.

· Excellent career progression – the BBC offers great opportunities for employees to seek new challenges and work in different areas of the organisation.

· Unrivalled training and development opportunities – our in-house Academy hosts a wide range of internal and external courses and certification.

· Benefits– We offer a competitive salary package, a flexible 35-hour working week for work-life balance and 26 days (1 of which is a corporation day) with the option to buy an extra 5 days, a defined pension scheme and discounted dental, health care, gym and much more.

The situation regarding the coronavirus outbreak is developing quickly and the BBC is keen to continue to ensure the safety and wellbeing of people across the BBC, while continuing to protect our services. To reduce the risk access to BBC buildings is limited to those essential to our broadcast output.
