Baeldung helps developers explore the Java ecosystem and simply be better engineers. We publish to-the-point guides and courses, with a strong focus on building web applications, Spring, Spring Security, and RESTful APIs. Our platform is a highly optimized WordPress instance behind CloudFlare that serves over 12m page hits a month with about 2750 active visitors at peak.. The platform is run on a mature theme, several custom plugins and third party plugins such as CF7, Elementor, Advanced Access Manager, W3 Total Cache.
We are looking for someone to fill our Lead Backend/Wordpress Developer role.
This role naturally involves leading a team of devs, both frontend & backend, to add new features, improve the existing implementation, and fix bugs within our mature WordPress multisite instance. The accepted candidate must have experience working as a Team Lead.Therefore, we are looking for some who are at Senior/Expert level.
Nature of Work
This is a 100% contract based remote role.
Our company is 100% remote relying on asynchronous communication to keep in touch since our team is spread throughout the world and different time zones. We use tools including Email, Jira, Trello, and Slack to keep track of projects to communicate.
Roles and Responsibilities
1. Reviewing code and Pull requests by the Developer team.
2. Keeping Senior Lead and Management updated
3. Reviewing feature requests and bug reports and creating tasks for devs
4. Managing/mentoring devs depending on their respective strengths and weaknesses
5. Participate in new project architecture discussions and design process.
6. Owning specific projects from their conception to delivery.
7. Documenting and preparing thorough SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) for the team and for the Non Technical Team.
Time Commitment
We are looking for an individual who can consistently commit around 5-10h per week.
Due to the nature of the work, this will likely be split up over the course of the week.
As a team, we aim to respond to messages within 24h Mon-Fri (of course faster is better), and as the team lead, guiding the team daily during the week is critical to keep everyone unblocked and moving forward.
Mandatory Experience
Must have a minimum 5 years or more experience with PHP and WordPress, a minimum of 3 years Wordpress experience.
Must have built or been part of a team that worked on a WordPress Codebase and/or was involved in building WordPress Theme/Plugin.
Must have have both developer experience and have led a developer team, specifically experience working with, reading, reviewing, debugging, and maintaining other developers’ code.
Must have demonstrable knowledge of WordPress security gaps, exploits, and the means to plug, fix, and how to stay ahead of these, both in coding and management of plugins.
Expert level proficiency with git, git flow vs trunk, fixing merge conflicts, semantic versioning, feature branches, etc.
Awareness of the larger picture beyond the code and how it should affect their roles. Eg, SEO, DevOps, backups, post-mortems, marketing, deadlines, business demands vs engineering needs, people management, compromises, etc
Desired Experience
Experience leading in a remote environment using tools such as Jira, Slack, Trello, etc.
Familiarity with CI/CD (Jenkins), OOP, types, and Unit Tests.
Familiarity with PHPDoc approach of code commenting / documentation.
Familiarity with WordPress Coding Standards.
Some experience working with a high traffic website and challenges faced eg. cache invalidation, mysql max-connections, PHP workers - pools - children - etc.
Familiarity with optimizing WordPress code for themes / plugins.
Some familiarity with multisite WordPress deployments.
Bonus Skills
Some experience managing a WordPress website.
Some experience with the plugins we use e.g. CF7 and Elementor and extending them.
Some familiarity with other tools that are used eg, Google Analytics, Microsoft clarity, Semrush, etc
Some experience with npm/grunt.
Rate / Payment
$29 to $33 hourly depending on background and experience.
