Basic Function

An employee in this position provides varied legal services and advice on state and local tax matters of significant scope and complexity. Work involves appellate litigation – representing the Commonwealth in state and local tax appeals filed in Commonwealth Court. The duties of this position involve all aspects of handling tax appeals including evaluating each appeal, determining the proper course of action, and working to a final resolution of each matter. The successful candidate must possess excellent oral communications and writing skills and strong organizational skills to effectively manage a heavy caseload. As a Deputy Attorney General I or II (DAG I or DAG II) gains experience, work increases in complexity and is performed with more independence. A Deputy Attorney General III (DAG III) will work independently on most matters.
• Litigates tax cases including preparing the stipulation of facts, briefing, and arguing the cases in Commonwealth Court
• Prepares motions, status reports, and other filings in Commonwealth Court
• Interacts with Department of Revenue staff including the Office of Chief Counsel, the Bureau of Audits, and the Pass Through Business Office
• Conducts legal research related to pending litigation
• Occasionally drafts, serves, and responds to discovery requests
• Collaborates with other sections within the Office of Attorney General, as required
• Answers routine case-related correspondence

The Attorney General is looking for a highly motivated individual to join the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office in Boston to conduct investigations and prosecutions in the Gaming Enforcement Division within the Criminal Bureau. The Gaming Enforcement Division is a statewide team of prosecutors, investigators, and administrative and other staff, partnered with the Massachusetts State Police, and charged with investigating and prosecuting gaming-related crimes, pursuant to M.G.L. c. 12, § 11M.

Primary Duties: The Assistant Attorney General in the Gaming Enforcement Division will be involved in investigating and prosecuting criminal conduct related to expanded gaming in the Commonwealth, including violations of M.G.L. c. 23K, G.L. c. 267A and M.G.L. c. 271, and other illegal activity, such as gaming-related financial crime, organized crime, corruption, and money laundering. The Gaming Enforcement Division is a statewide division, and the position requires a candidate with a proven track record of versatility and adaptability. Division members work closely with the State Police Gaming Enforcement Unit assigned to both the Office of the Attorney General and the Gaming Commission, as well as federal, state, and local law enforcement partners, which demands a demonstrated history of successful partnerships with other law enforcement agencies.

The Assistant Attorney General will be expected to handle a caseload and be charged with leading and coordinating investigations and prosecutions with State Police in conjunction with other prosecutors, victim/witness advocates, paralegals, and support staff. Additional functions will include screening potential cases, fostering relationships with industry stakeholders, participating in trainings, occasional district court coverage, and working cohesively with others in the Office of the Attorney General.

All employees assigned to the Gaming Enforcement Division are subject to the Enhanced Code of Ethics adopted pursuant to M.G.L. c. 12, § 11M(c).

The Behavioral Health Forensic and Behavioral Health Civil Sections provide legal representation to the Behavioral Health Administration of the Washington State Department of Social and Health Services, including the Special Commitment Center (SCC), The Office of Forensic Mental Health Services and Western State Hospital (WSH).
